7 How to dry Plastics with Compressed Air Drying Procedure/Description Due to its physical property, air absorbs only a certain amount of moisture per cubic meter. This always depends on the temperature. When compressing this air by means of a compressor, accumulated water will be extracted By cooling down this compressed air subsequently to approx. 3 to 5 C with means of a refrigerant dryer, a dew point of approx. -25 C will be reached upon depressurization of air (done within the compressed-air dryer) This air quality is sufficient for the drying of almost all plastics In order to dry plastics by means of depressurized air, it must be oil- and dust free. An oil and dirt separator within the compressed air piping makes sure of that 7

16 SOMOS -Dryers / Features ALAV Automatic Load Adjustment Valve ALAV = Automatic load adjustment method, Indicated by return air temperature, Value of an average of around 20 C above the product inlet temperature Option of all bigger dryers (series D and WT) Option of all single and module drying hoppers Energy saving due to ALAV function of dryer: Regulation of total air fow rate via frequency control of the process blower Lower power consumption of blower due to lower air flow rate Lower power consumption of process heater due to lower air flow rate Material protection/energy saving due to ALAV function of drying hopper: Regulation of air flow rate via throttle valves at each hopper Optimal drying result due to need-adjusted air flow rates Lower power consumption of process heater due to lower air flow rate
17 SOMOS -Dryers / Features SUPER SOMOS = Automatic adjustment of the dessicants regeneration quantity to the actual need Option of all dry air dryers Rregeneration at regular intervals, if a lot of water needs to be adsorbed Power saving mode, if less water needs to be adsorbed/if material is dry Software calculates waiting time which follows the regeneration time Neither regeneration heater nor blower operate during waiting time
18 SOMOS -Dryers / Features IDMS IDMS (Integrated Drying Management System) stands for adjustment of dwelling time within hopper to the drying material s throughput. Independent from IDMS-usage, the drying hopper is always being operated completely filled, dry-air generator conditions regarding air volume and loss of pressure therefore are steady. Advantages: The effective dwelling time is adjusted to the actual throughput. No additional height required (as with tapered diameters hopper). No thermic damage/overdrying of material. IDMS: Perfect for usage at times of considerable production-related fluctuations of material throughput or at demand of materials being dried at considerable different dwelling times within one hopper. The rest remains at surrounding temperature. Therefore no thermic material damage at longer dwell time within hopper. 18
