There are several benefits to using a hot runner mold as opposed to a cold runner mold. When designed and built correctly, hot runners are easy to use and allow an injection molding company to save costs and increase productivity. Eliminates Cold Runner Not having to deal with a cold runner saves money in a number of ways: no wasted plastic material no need to pay someone to make regrind no sprue picker robot required faster cycle time for increased productivity levels Thinner Walled Parts A hot runner makes it easier for a molding machine to inject plastic into a mould cavity. A hot runner increases the capability of a molding machine. It reduces the plastic flow length so a molder can save material by making thinner and lighter parts. Shorter Cycle Time A shorter opening stroke can be used as there is no runner to eject saving cycle time. Injection fill times are shorter because the plastic flow length is shorter which also saves cycle time. What s more, for high cavitation moulds runners need to be thick and cold runners will need a long cooling time before being solid enough to eject from a mold. Hot Runner Manufacturers There many hot runner manufacturers making high quality hot runners 1 of 15
2 around the world today. Each one can custom make a hot runner to fit a new mold design. The high number of manufacturers means competition keeps prices under control. Good support is also available from most of them. Mold Makers Can Make Hot Runners Some injection mold makers are capable of making their own hot runners. The advantage is that one company can take full responsibility of the entire mold and it reduces the hot runner price. To make a hot runner requires standard tool making equipment such as a radial drill, cnc machining center, a surface grinder, a cylindrical grinder and a cnc lathe. All heater elements can be bought and a person qualified in electrical wiring can connect them to the temperature controller. The materials required to make a hot tip hot runner are P20 for the manifold and H13 for the nozzles and insulators. The nozzle tips are usually made from a copper alloy but can also be made from H13 and thru hardened for long life. Additional Comments The decision to use a hot runner or cold runner must be taken on a case by case basis but the fact is that a molder having a medium to high annual quantity requirement for any particular part will benefit from a hot runner mold. The extra cost of a hot runner will be recovered through faster cycle times, better quality parts and material savings. 5 Description Coil heaters(germany) THERMO-coil coil heaters are available in various cross sections and sizes and offer high-capacity electrical heating in the tightest of installation spaces at temperatures of up to 750 C on the cartridge sheath. The minimum bend radius of R3 to R13 (depending on the cross section) allows the use of the THERMO-coil coil heaters not only in extended or coiled form, but in virtually every geometrical shape. An optionally integrated thermocouple enables precise temperature control. In nozzle heating, the THERMO-coil achieves individual power distribution through the specifically designed gradient of the individual coils. Flexible tubular heaters(germany) The flexible tubular heaters THERMO-flex D-shape or THERMO-flex square are delivered ex-stock in various sizes and can be bent to fit virtually any 2D or 3D groove using the THERMO-flex tool set, for example. The outer sheath, made of woven pure nickel, adapts to any curvature and presses itself evenly against the surface of the groove. This guarantees optimal heat transfer even when under extreme mechanical stress. Clamping jacket for THERMO-coil heaters(germany) State of the art Many state-of-the-art clamping mechanisms are designed to ensure that THERMO-coil heaters remain firmly clamped to hot runner nozzles. However, the majority reach their limits pretty quickly: the material loses its stability under extreme temperatures and expands, causing the coil heater to uncontrollably detach itself from the nozzle. This creates pockets of air between the heating element and the nozzle, which makes it impossible to keep the temperature even and can very quickly lead to the complete failure of the coil heater due to overheating. In addition, screw connections, tension clamps or the complete moulding of the heating element mean that many of these clamping mechanisms also require a great deal of space, which is not available in standard hot runner moulds with little cavity spacing. The THERMO-jacket permanently holds and clamps and is basically a slotted metal tube that firmly clamps the THERMO-coil coil heater onto the cylindrical hot runner nozzle at temperatures of up to 550 C. The material properties of the THERMO-jacket, together with its thin-walled design, easily and effectively solve all conventional clamping mechanism problems THERMO - SLIDE (Germany) Easy assembly and durable fit without additional tools Our smart solution for effective heating is the THERMO-slide, a special compact heating element for hot runner systems. Magneto Coated Titanium Anode Because of a very flexible production facility, we are able to manufacture anodes of all types: sheet, plate, mesh, wire, rod, tubular or combinations and/or assemblies of these materials. Their size and number vary from several cm2 to 2 m2 and from 1 to 10,000 pieces. The process in which the anodes are used determines size, shape and coating specification of an anode.
