1 CoziMat 1. Introduction and Brief Description The CoziMat underfloor heating mat is designed for underfloor heating of rooms where the floor thickness needs to be kept to a minimum. CoziMat underfloor heating mat is suitable for installing on top of concrete or timber subfloors, and is suitable for installing underneath ceramic tiled or stone floor finishes. The floor sensing thermostat (not included) automatically maintains the preset room temperature level - and provides economic use of electricity by energizing the CoziMat floor heater only as required. CoziMat and CoziStat Data Sheets are available from IMPORTANT: Please read these installation instructions carefully before attempting to install the CoziMat underfloor heating system. Incorrect installation may cause damage to the heating cable. All electrical connections and connection to the mains supply must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The power supply should be isolated.

2 2. Choosing the correct size CoziMat or combination of CoziMats Method 1: Area Method First start by calculating the area of the floor to be heated. Calculate the total floor area minus any permanent fixtures. We also recommend you leave a 100mm allowance around the perimeter of the room, so that there is room for any subsequent fittings (such as door stops) which attach to the floor to be done so without damaging the underfloor heating mat; Length (minus 200mm) x width (minus 200mm) = m 2 Choose the CoziMat underfloor heating mat or combination of mats closest in size to the area you want to heat. We recommend slightly smaller than the area, so round your calculated floor area down. Ex. Length 3.4m (minus 200mm) x Width 4.5m (minus 200mm) = 3.2m x 4.3m = 13.76m Here, you could use a combination of a 12sq.m CoziMat and a 1sq.m CoziMat, or an 8sq.m CoziMat and a 5sq.m CoziMat Method 2: Length Method Each CoziMat is 0.5m wide Each CoziMat is 2 x m 2 long (e.g. a 4m 2 CoziMat is 0.5m wide and 8m long) Mark your floor on the grid below, using the grid lines as 100mm spacings. Remember to leave a 100mm allowance around the perimeter of the room. Draw 500mm x 500mm lines. This can be used to map and determine the suitable lengths of the mats, and therefore the CoziMat sizes to use. Ex. If you count 13 squares in the grid you have drawn, then the run length is 13 x 500mm = 6.5m. Divide by 2 to get the mat size, so in this case = Round down and use a 3m 2 CoziMat. Tip: When counting squares in your 500mm x 500mm grid, if you use more than half a square, count it as a whole square, and if you use less than half a square, only count it as a half square.

What You Will Require for Installation: In the box; CoziMat Installation Manual Sold separately; Floor sensing thermostat, such as CoziStat 30mA RCD (residual current device) PVA (recommended to seal the subfloor surface) Cable trunking (for power and sensor cables in the wall) Flexible conduit (for sensor cables in the floor) Optional; Insulation Floor Boards If the room is particularly prone to heat-loss (poor insulation, subfloor or otherwise) it is recommended that you install Insulation Floor Boards underneath the CoziMat underfloor heating mats. Latex/Flexible Self-Leveling Compound suitable for underfloor heating If the floor surface is not being laid straight away on top of the installed underfloor heating mats, it is recommended that you apply a thin layer of latex self-leveling compound suitable for underfloor heating. Cover all of the mat and cable with approximately a 5mm layer so that no parts are visible. This will help to protect the heating mats until the floor surface is laid. This method is also suitable for use with carpet and laminate floor finishes with suitable underlay please check with the floor finish supplier regarding suitability with underfloor heating. Aluminium Tape If you are using latex/flexible self-leveling compound, and there are any cable loops that do not lie flat to the floor, it is recommended that you stick these flat to the floor with aluminum fixing tape. Underlay for Carpet or Laminate floor finishes Underlay should be laid over the Self-Leveling Compound layer and should be suitable for underfloor heating. Specialist Underlay for Underfloor Heating typically has a reduced tog rating to allow the heat to transfer from the CoziMat to your floor surface. 4. IMPORTANT DO NOT: Do not overlap, cross or touch the heating cable to itself Do not cut through the blue heating cable Do not bend the blue heating cable at a radius of less than 25mm Do not load a single thermostat with more than 16A Do not position a thermostat in Bathroom Zones 0-2 (consult the latest IET Wiring Regulations or a qualified electrician) Do not choose a heating mats size that is too large it cannot be shortened and should not be left rolled up under fittings Do not commence installation on a subfloor that is not completely clean and dry Do not turn on the heating system until the tile adhesive has been allowed to set DO: Do read these installation instruction carefully before attempting to install your CoziMat underfloor heating system Do complete our 3 test procedure as a minimum Do connect the heating mats in parallel Do allow 100mm minimum spacings between runs of the blue heating cable

Electrical Safety During Installation All mains electrical connections must be undertaken by a certified electrician and must conform to current IEE Wiring Regulations You must use a floor sensor thermostat, such as CoziStat, to control the CoziMat underfloor heating system at all times Use a 30mA residual current device for maximum safety 6. Positioning of the CoziMat Underfloor Heating Mats We recommend that the CoziMat is not installed beneath permanently positioned fitted furniture (e.g. kitchen cupboards, under baths and sink units, etc.). The shape of the mat can be modified to suit the shape of your floor by cutting the red mesh mat - taking care not to cut the blue heating cable. The mat can be rotated, such as shown in the diagram below. Be careful not to cross/overlap/touch the blue heating cable with itself. Example: correct method of cutting and positioning CoziMat 1. 6 7. Positioning the Thermostat Position the thermostat conveniently on the wall - preferably near an existing power source to avoid the need for additional wiring. Always protect the heating circuits with a suitably rated fuse and a 30 ma residual current device. In accordance with BS 7671: 2008 IET 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, thermostats must not be positioned within Zones 0-2, which are considered the wettest areas. Please refer to the current IET Regulations or a qualified electrician to ensure that you are guided by the latest regulations and code of practice. If the room is big enough to incorporate an Outside Zone (an area outside of zones 0-2, where water jets are not used for cleaning purposes), the thermostat can be positioned here. Otherwise the thermostat must be positioned outside of the room, away from wet conditions. 8. Testing the CoziMat(s) During installation, it is recommended that you perform the following tests to ensure that no damage has occurred at any stage of the installation process. You should check and record both the resistance of the CoziMat floor heater and the insulation resistance at the following points (as directed in the installation instructions): Test 1: Before installation. Test 2: After positioning the CoziMat(s). Test 3: After applying the latex/flexible self-leveling compound. (Only if you are using latex/flexible self-leveling compound). Test 4: After installation of the floor covering. Use the following table as a guide. For the Heater Resistance Test, make sure your readings fall on or in between the lower and upper bounds as give, according to the CoziMat size. For the Insulation Resistance Test, make sure the reading is greater than, or equal to 10MΩ. 7 9. Installation 1. Prepare the position on the wall for the thermostat. 2. Channel out grooves in the wall for the power supply wires, CoziMat cold lead power cable, and for the temperature sensor. 3. Channel out a groove in the floor for the flexible conduit, which will be used to protect the floor sensor. 4. Prepare the subfloor surface to ensure it is as smooth and even as possible. The floor should be clean and dry. It is recommended that you paint the subfloor surface with PVA and allow it to dry to seal the floor before installing the CoziMat. 5. Insert the temperature sensor into the flexible conduit, and seal the end using adhesive tape to ensure that the tile adhesive/self-leveling compound does not penetrate the conduit. Feed the sensor wires out through the opposite end of the flexible conduit, place the flexible conduit into the groove in the floor and up the wall, and fix the sensor wires (for connection to the thermostat) into position. 6. Fill the groove with tile cement to hold the conduit in place and leave to set. 7. Mark the sensor position on the floor. 8. Test 1: Before installation. Check and record both the resistance of the CoziMat floor heater and the insulation resistance.

8 9. Roll out and position the CoziMat underfloor heating mat(s), with the red mesh mat underneath and the blue heating cable on top. 10. Cut the red mesh mat where necessary, allowing rotation of the mat to suite your floor shape and requirements. Do not cut through the blue heating cable.

9 11. Make sure that the sensor position (previously marked at Step 7) is positioned centrally between the heating cable. 12. Test 2: After positioning the CoziMat(s). Check and record both the resistance of the CoziMat floor heater and the insulation resistance. 13. When you re happy with the layout of the CoziMat(s), peel off the sticky adhesive tape backing underneath the mats and stick them firmly to the floor. If you are tiling over the mats straight away, jump to step 18.

10 14. Only if you are using latex/flexible self-leveling compound). If there are any loops of heater cable sticking up, use small pieces of aluminium tape to stick them to the floor. 15. Only if you are using latex/flexible self-leveling compound). Peel off the white sticky adhesive tape backing on top of the mats.

11 16. Only if you are using latex/flexible self-leveling compound). Apply a layer (approximately 5mm) of latex/flexible self-leveling compound (suitable for underfloor heating) to the floor, completely covering the mesh and heating cable and leave it to set. 17. (Only if you are using latex/flexible self-leveling compound). Test 3: After applying the latex/flexible self-leveling compound. Check and record both the resistance of the CoziMat floor heater and the insulation resistance. 18. Use a flexible tile adhesive (suitable for underfloor heating), applying the adhesive directly over CoziMat, or over the self-leveling compound layer, ensuring there are no air pockets. Lay your new tiles as per the instructions provided by the supplier. Allow for the newly laid floor tiles to set as per the tile supplier instructions before the CoziMat heating system is activated. 19. Test 4: After installation of the floor covering. Check and record both the resistance of the CoziMat floor heater and the insulation resistance. 20. Connect the cold leads to the thermostat in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. 21. Fill the groove in the wall used for the sensor cable and the CoziMat cold lead, and leave to set.
