Check Your Heater's Health First Before You Do The Heater Assembly Replacement Operation [edit] One way of checking whether your Gene Cafe heating element is working properly are to follow these steps: 1. ensure the chaff collector and chamber are empty and clean (refer to Gene Cafe manual on cleaning instructions) 2. ensure the chaff collector and chamber are dry 3. ensure the fan filter is clean (refer to Gene Cafe manual on cleaning instructions) 4. ensure that your Gene Cafe is connected directly to the power outlet (without the use of extension cord) and that no other appliance is connected to the same circuit. 5. turn on the Gene Cafe 6. set the Temperature to set the Time to 15 minutes 8. use a timer to record the temperature reading every minute (1 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

2 9. start the roasting with the empty chamber on the roaster 10. the Temperature reading should reach 250 within about 8 minutes (you should hear a clicking sound when this happen). The earlier the roaster reached 250 the better. On the other hand, if the roaster reached 250 well beyond the 8 minutes mark then it is very likely that the heater element is not working properly. Please note that the time to reach 250 is dependent on ambient temperature (humidity and wind, if roasting outdoor, will also affect the temperature ramp). Thus, when ambient temperature is 22 you may reach 250 in 8 minutes but in colder days of say 20 you may reach 250 longer (in my Gene Cafe, around 10 minutes 30 seconds). The key is to note down the ambient temperature and the time it took your GC to reach 250. Then if you think your GC is not heating fast enough, do this heater health check again and compare against your previous notes. If you factor in the effect of ambient temperature and there is a big difference in the time GC reached 250 (or not at all), then it is time to call GC's Service Center for Heater Assembly replacement. The Heater Assembly Replacement Operation [edit] Once you have decided that you want to replace your Heater Assembly then the steps to do so are as follows: It is recommended to clean Gene Cafe first before proceeding with this procedure. This is to avoid chaff going into the electronic components of the roaster. Make sure the Gene Cafe is not plugged to the power outlet Remove the clear plastic Safety Cover Remove the 2 Base Panel (2 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

3 screws Lift the Base Panel slighly using 2 negative (flat) screw drivers (3 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

4 Lift the Base Panel all the way out (4 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

5 Remove both the left and right Side Cover (or End Spacers) (5 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

6 Stand the Gene Cafe on its side to easily remove the 8 screws on the bottom (note that the 2 center screws are shorter) (6 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

7 Lift the Top Cabinet Assembly slightly (about 2 centimeters). It is easier done with both hands (I have my other hand on a camera that is why it is not in the picture :) Stand the Gene Cafe on its side then carefully unplug the 2 set of cables as shown (7 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

9 Now you can pull the Top Cabinet Assembly all the way up Loosen the 2 screws on the inlet fan this will make the removal of the Heater Assembly easier (9 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

10 Unplug the 2 white cables from the Heater Assembly (10 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

11 Unscrew the cable tie to free the 2 white cables from the Heater (11 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

12 Assembly Remove the 2 screws (there are 4 in total) holding the Heater Assembly. Note that the ground wire (the green wire) is being held by one of the screws, remember to put back the ground wire when you are replacing the screws (12 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

13 Remove another 2 screws holding the Heater Assembly (13 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

14 You can now gently wriggle the Heater Assembly out. Note the position of the 2 Ball Bearings and ensure that they are in place when putting in the new Heater Assembly. (14 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

15 Make sure the drum guides are aligned. Temporarily put in the drum. Check that the drum could slide smoothly in and will lock in place, otherwise, rotate the Rotary Base Assembly cog until the guides are aligned as shown in the picture (15 of 17) [1/06/2007 9:11:46 AM]

16 At this stage you have have the new Heater Assembly in place. You now need to follow the steps backwards (applying common sense) to put your Gene Cafe together again.
