3 1850 Jacques Henry set up his own pottery workshop in Marcigny. The clay came from the surrounding area. Production was varied; jugs, dishes, flower pots... firing took place once a week, in a kiln heated by wood Emile Henry, born in 1885, left for the war in In 1922, he took over as Managing Director, and struggled for the next 30 years to keep the company going through difficult times. Competition from metallic containers became stronger, and many French potteries went out of business. This was the beginning of mechanization, and the company employed 50 people It was time for Maurice to take over the management of the company at 32 years old. Production grew from 1000 to 5000 tons over 15 years. Modern kilns reduced the firing time from 30 to 3 hours. It was the beginning of export towards Great Britain, Denmark and Australia. 200 people were employed by the company After 5 years of research, Flame was launched on the market. This was the first ceramic to be used directly on the gas or electric hob. This special clay first became known through the Tagine, followed by stewpots, a Tarte Tatin dish 1882 Paul was 22 when he took over the company. In order to develop the customer base, he moved to Paris. This move paid off, and the factory was producing at full capacity. Paul was able to invest in a steam machine, symbol of power and independence Jacques first priority was to improve the strength and resistance of the dishes. He created a laboratory specialized in research and development. In 1986, Céradon was born. To differentiate from low cost products, he created the Emile Henry brand name. It was the start of marketing and advertising

4 QUALITY AT EMILE HENRY The high level of quality at Emile Henry relies on our determination to adapt and develop our products to the new ways of cooking which have appeared on the market: the microwave, grill, gas and ceramic stoves... Since 1980, Research and Development has become an integral part of the company, keeping a close eye on technological progress and the competition. Systematic controls are in place, enabling Emile Henry to keep the leading edge in technology. Thermal resistance An oven dish must be able to withstand wide variations in temperatures. The Céradon formula and process, developed in our laboratory, allows our products to be taken directly from the freezer to a hot oven at 500 F, and from the hot oven to the work surface. Time resistance Heat, the dishwasher and sharp instruments will all have an aging effect on a product. We carry out tests to see how our products age: they are submerged in oil and subjected to a high temperature for 12 hours, which is the equivalent of 5 years in ordinary conditions. Our glazes, fired at a very high temperature (2100 F), resist aging in the dishwasher and protect against the most aggressive of detergents. Easy to clean Why do some products get dirty very quickly and we are unable to get them clean? Because the surface is covered with lots of microscopic holes created by the production molds. Once burnt-on food has seeped into these holes, it is impossible to get it out, and the surface becomes dirty. Emile Henry dishes are covered with a white or colored glaze which is absolutely smooth and makes cleaning very easy even if your potato gratin has burned. All Emile Henry products can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Eco-responsible The CO 2 expelled by the factory is particularly low. Our firing techniques are modern and fast: 2100 F in 3 hours, while numerous other factories fire up to 2550 F for 24 hours. Emile Henry only uses products which come directly from the environment, whether it be clay, ground stone (Feldspath), gypsum or mineral oxides to color our glazes. The waste in general is recycled (plaster, glazes, packaging) and the water used in production is filtered and used again in the production process. Chip resistance There are many opportunities to bang a dish or a set of plates during everyday use. Emile Henry s Céradon is particularly resistant to these shocks, so much so that the Hotel and Restaurant Industry uses more and more of our products. A set of Emile Henry plates used every day and handled with no special care, will last for many years without chipping. Made in France Emile Henry products have always been made in Marcigny, in the south of Burgundy. It is a tradition and savoir-faire that has been handed down from generation to generation. Our products are made by qualified workers: it takes 3 years to master the technique and gain the title of a "professional". Each operator prepares their molds, makes the dishes, finishes each piece and signs it with their initials. This responsibility is taken on by every operator in the factory, a pledge of quality and pride. 6 7
