1 I,-! 4' - cqecial COMPILATION V - Dominion Burccu of Statistics This Is not a report or publication, but a stoten, ent compiled to meet a limited and special demand HOUSEHOLD EQUIP)INT June, 1951 Heating Facilities Intoduction In June 1951, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics carried out a special sample survey of heating facilities in private homes0 The survey was made in corijunction with the quarterly labour foroa survey, Over households chosen by area sampling methods in about 110 areas were visited. The estimates are subject to sampling error0 In general s the smaller the estimate, the larger is the relative sampling error0 Estimates of less than are replaced throughout the tables by a3terisks to indicate that the sampling error associated with them is relatively large and that they should not be used without careful reservations0 Samile Desila The mthod of sampling used in the labour force survey is referred to as "area sampling". One essential feature of it is that a specified ratic of the households in a given area is enurnerated This is to be distinguished from sampling methods which depend on the availability of accurate and up-to.-date information on the number of persons in an area or in a class. Since the area sampling method specifies the selection of a given proportion of the households in the area, the sample will provide current estimates of household characteristics. Sampling is applied to all but a small proportion of the Canadian civilian, noninstitutional population. Persons in the armed forces or living in institutions are excluded by design as are persons living on Indian reserves and in certain remote areas - Definitions The term "dwelling" as used at present in sample surveys conducted by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics is defined as follows "Structurally separate living premises the building or from a common hail or "dwelling". The entrance must not be with private entrance from outside stairway inside constitute a through anyone else's living quarters"0 A "household" includes all the persons living in an occupied dwelling. Before 1950, however, a "household" was defined as a group of perrons who li ve together in the same living quarters and do their housekeeping in common and separately from any other person or group of persons A "dwelling unit" was defined as the space which a household occupied, Under these definitions, it was possible to have two or more households or dwelling units in one set of structurally separate living premises0 These differences should be kept in mind when comparing data contained in this report with material published prior to 1950, Pr"pared in the Specie] Surveys Division
