8% Retailers who offer a service to remove old carpet 92% Yes No 83% try and encourage the customer to dispose of the old materials themselves 84% Would charge customers for disposal 52% itemising this service in their quotation Customers who are prepared to pay for removal of waste by the retailer 26% 74% Yes No

40% 35% 30% 25% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% Who Removes Waste From Premises 40% Local Independent Contractor 12% Retailer themselves 15% Local Authority/Council Service 26% Waste Management Contractor Other 7%
Total average spending in 2009 on waste disposal 4200 Average per respondent per year 350 Average per respondent per month In 2011this would be equivalent to 530
Most retailers will encourage their customers to dispose of their carpet/underlay themselves, most of which ends up in landfill sites Customers are prepared to pay the retailer to take away all waste after the completion of work. Segregation is critical Recycling carpets adds increased value to both the customer and the retailer
Does any one currently run a take back service? What barriers did you face when setting up this service? For retailers who haven t set up a take back service what has stopped you? Do you think consumers will actually pay extra for this service? Do think consumers will see a take back service as added value?
