23 Purpose of survey was to enquire how retailers handle their carpet waste Questionnaire sent to the Carpet Foundation s retail members 472 replies 51% response rate

28 Most retailers will encourage their customers to dispose of their carpet/underlay themselves, most of which ends up in landfill sites Customers are prepared to pay the retailer to take away all waste after the completion of work. Segregation is critical Recycling carpets adds increased value to both the customer and the retailer

40 4Recycling: Carpet Retailers The Floorstore Full carpet removal and replacement service Installation offcuts processed along with old carpet Steve Walker, owner of the Floor Store: the new service is easy to use and environmentally preferable to landfilling carpet wastes. It s also more cost effective in the longer term, given that landfill costs are set to rise above 100/ t in the next 2 years.

This service will also save money in the long term as landfill costs rise."

42 4Recycling: Local Authority Bradford City Council Carpet bins at 6 HWRC Recycling of c.40 t carpet /month Dave Copeland, BCC manager reported favourable public response and comments already high recycling rate of 77% from HWRC looking to raise to c.82% with 4Recycling partnership.
