In our daily contact with road maintenance departments like yours, we heard a common concern "When we use the expensive cold mix for pot hole repairs, it seems to last only a few days to a week at best, then we're out there doing the same repair over and over again, there has to be a better way." "How can we make permanent, cost effective road repairs after the hot-mix plant closes?" We listened to your concerns and questions, and then our engineers took the challenge to design a portable, easy to use, and affordable machine that can recycle asphalt millings or create hot mix from raw materials at a rate fast enough to keep up with your busy road repair schedule. The result is the Stepp SRM Asphalt Recycler/Mixer.

6 What does it do? The SRM will recycle asphalt millings into new 300 F hot mix at a rate of up to 3 Ton per hour. This rate can be achieved even at an outside temperature of 20 F giving you usable production rates year round. Custom mixes from raw materials can also be created with the SRM Different sized aggregate, chips, or even sand, can be used to make the perfect mix for your special needs. The SRM uses an indirect method of heating. The flame does not come in contact with the materials being heated. This indirect method of heating reduces smoke emissions, burning off the oils from your millings, and fire dangers. The indirect heating method allows approx. 90% of the oils to be retained. Thus only about 1½ to 1¾ gallons of oil need to be added for each yard of recycled millings. The on-board heated kettle has a capacity of 120 gallons allowing you to recycle about 50 to 60 yards without refilling the kettle. Of course if you are creating hot mix from raw materials the oil use will be higher.

7 Operation The machine is completely self contained and portable. A properly equipped ¾ ton pickup or larger truck is needed to pull the unit. The SRM is equipped with two (2) 6000 lb. axles, electric brakes, and DOT approved lighting for safe and easy transporting. Millings are loaded into the preheat hopper on top of the machine with the aid of a operator controlled loading conveyor. At the operators discretion the milling are dropped into the recycling hopper and processed into new, usable hot mix for pothole repair. All heating controls are located in the control panel on the right rear of the machine. Operation of the heating system only requires the power switch to be placed in the ON position and the thermostat for the kettle portion of the machine to be set to the desired temperature. The feed, mixing, and blending rates are all controlled from the same control panel as the heating system for convenient operation of the machine. Once the SRM is at operating temperature and the Batch Timer\Counter are adjusted properly, no further steps are required to operate the machine other than monitoring the operation and perhaps making minor adjustments to the timer. Of course you have to load millings into the machine... then recycled asphalt discharges from the rear of the machine in required quantities to the site of road repair.

8 How it's built The SRM consists of a preheat hopper located on top of a heating/mixing chamber. The hopper is heated from the exhaust of the two diesel burners located in the heating/mixing chambers. Loading of the preheat hopper is accomplished by a hydraulic driven loading conveyor that is positioned below on the hitch for ground loading or can be loaded from a towing vehicle with the appropriate attachments. A rubber cleated belt assures product travel during operations and is operated by hydraulic power. The heating/mixing chamber is equipped with a pugmill for mixing and blending. The pugmill is driven by a separate hydraulic motor with a gear reduction. The heating/mixing chamber is positioned horizontally. The chamber heats, dries, and pulverizes the asphalt millings or raw aggregate. Then oil is added and blended, and the mix is further heated up to the proper temperature (approx. 300 F). The new hot mix then discharges from the chamber out the rear of the machine. The mixing chamber liner is replaceable, as are the paddles on the pugmill. Both the liners and the pugmill paddles are constructed of long life wear resistant AR ¼" plate steel. The heating/mixing chamber is heated with two diesel fueled burners in an indirect method. This means the flame does not come into contact with the material being heated in the chambers. This helps prevent the oils from being burnt off the aggregate. Money is saved as approx 90% of the oils are retained reducing the amount of oil needed for the recycling process.

9 The oil used in the recycling process is heated in a 120 gallon kettle mounted along side the heating/mixing chamber. The kettle is heated with a diesel burner firing down a flue submerged in the oil in the kettle. The temperature is controlled by a F thermostat. The temperature of the oil in the kettle is shown on an LCD digital display in the control panel. The kettle contains a pump, driven hydraulically, to pump oil into the mixing chamber at a controlled rate. The pumping rate is adjustable with the hydraulic controls and is monitored on an LCD digital display. The pump also has the ability to be used with a tack wand, circulate the oil within the kettle for quicker heat-up times, and to purge material from the pump and plumbing for storage. Power for the entire machine is supplied by a turbocharged liquid cooled diesel engine. The engine drives a hydraulic pump to operate the pugmil, the pump on the kettle, the preheat hopper doors and the loading conveyor. The hydraulic system consists of the reservoir, filter, pump, bidirectional controls, flow controls, drive motors, magnetic tach pickups, and digital displays. An on-board fuel tank supplies fuel to the engine and all three burners. Four fuel filters are installed in the system, one for each burner, and one for the engine. Each burner and the engine also has its own fuel pump. These independent fuel systems allow easier troubleshooting In most cases, malfunction of one burner will not adversely effect operation of the machine. The chassis of the SRM is constructed of heavy duty rectangular tubing. The running gear consists of tandem axles with electric brakes and leaf spring suspension. DOT approved lighting and a 3" pintle ring hitch are included.
