PRODUCT IN RIBBON OR LIFTING FLIGHTS COOUNG MEDIUM OUT WHAT THE RIETZ THERMASCREW IS: The Rietz Thermascrew is basically a true heat exchanger consisting of a hollow screw mounted on a hollow shaft, rotating at slow speeds in a jacketed trough or pipe. See front cover for a typical trough unit. See Figure 1 for a typical unit mounted in a jacketed pipe. External lifter bars or continuous ribbons can be mounted between the outer edge of the screw and the inner surface of the trough to improve mixing action. Internal lifter bars, as an alternative, may be mounted between flights of the screw flush with the inner surface of the trough. Two screws may be mounted in the same trough, and may rotate in the same or in opposite directions depending upon whether conveying or mixing action is primarily desired. Externally mounted bearings eliminate contamination of product by oil or grease, and prevent product from entering bearings. HOW THE RIETZ THERMASCREW WORKS: Steam, heating fluid, coolant, water, or other liquid is circulated through the hollow shaft and screw, and also the jacketed trough or pipe. See Figure 2. The throughput material fills the trough around the hollow screw and shaft, and is heated or cooled by contact with these surfaces as it is mixed and conveyed forward. In addition to the mixing and conveying action afforded by the rotating hollow screw, additional mixing and conveying effect may be provided if desired by ribbons or lifter bars mounted externally along the length of the screw or, where the screw diameter is approximately the same as the trough diameter, by "internal" lifters or ribbons. Variable speed drives may he provided to permit variation in rotational speed of shaft and screw, thus allowing wide flexibility in controlling holding time. In this manner, even discharge temperatures can easily be obtained. Multiple units may be mounted in tandem, series, or banks for any desired capacity. May be fitted for continuous or batch operations. Standard units are also supplied with provision for applying live steam to the product through steam orifices along the trough. See Figure 3. This arrangement makes units versatile in the food or chemical industry where heating from the hollow screw is often satisfactorily combined with live steam heating, cooking, or blanching.

Ideally suited for continuous economical operation, thus eliminating costly handling and operating labor. Highly efficient heat exchange characteristics reduce fuel costs and speed processing times. Ability to handle many types of materials that cannot be handled in other conventional continuous heat exchangers. HOW THE RIETZ THERMASCREW WILL HELP YOU: Uniform heating, cooling, blanching, or other process is assured since heating or cooling medium is circulated full length of screw, shaft and trough, and uniform mixing action constantly tumbles the product against the heat transfer surfaces. Continuous operation affords many savings in costs over batch methods. May be used, however, as hatch unit if desired. Variable controls for holding times and heating or cooling medium permit wide versatility in using on various products. Final discharge temperatures of any degree within range of capabilities are easily obtained and accurately controlled. Low operating costs are made possible by efficient heat exchange characteristics and by automatic, continuous nature of operation. Power requirements are very low. Compactness of unit in proportion to heat transfer surface permits substantial savings in floor space. Units may be stacked in multiple banks for further space savings. Sanitary construction permits easy cleaning and compliance with sanitary regulations. All contact parts readily accessible. High product quality is assured by even mixing action of the screw which minimizes burning, sticking, abrading, dusting, crushing, breaking, etc., and, at the same time, permits even and uniform processing of the material. Versatility. Can he used on wide range of products from liquids and slurries to powders and granular materials. Can be used to heat, cook, blanch, cool, dry, chill, crystallize, etc. Multiple units may be installed in tandem, series or banks to provide any desired capacity. High capacities are provided by large area of heat transfer surface, and by fact that units can be run full with heat transfer surfaces rotating in the material itself in addition to the conventional outer jacketed areas customarily used on jacketed batch or continuous vessels.
