7 Chapter 2: Introduction 2.0 Introduction A mechanical splice only holds fiber ends together aligned but not permanently joined. The Black Box Fusion Splicer with Core Alignment () accurately aligns fiber cores and melts the ends together using an electric arc, creating a permanent joint. A fusion splice is the most stable and accurate fiber splice possible, creating splices with much lower return loss than mechanical splices or fiber connectors. The accurately aligns and fuses many different kinds of fiber cables, offering you functionality and features associated with much more expensive splicers. Plus, Black Box will clean and calibrate your unit once a year for three years. 2.1 What s Included Fusion splicer AC adapter AC power cord Case Charger Cleaver Cooling tray Fiber strippers Internal battery Spare electrodes This user s manual 2.2 Accessories You May Need Fiber protection sleeves Coat stripper Fiber cleaving tool Fiber cleaning tool kit, including 99% pure alcohol, lint-free tissue or gauze, and thin cotton swabs blackbox.com Page 7

18 Chapter 4: Splicing 4.6 Splicing Operation The uses image processing to identify abnormal conditions that sometimes occur during splicing. A small portion of these defects can go undetected and result in a poor quality splice. Look at the fiber image on the monitor to accept or reject the splice during the various splicing stages. 1. Before you start splicing Press to move the left and right fibers forward. After discharging the cleaning arc, the fibers stop at the predetermined position. NOTE: When the fiber are moving forward and they appear to hop up and down, contamination may be present in the V-grooves or the fiber surface. Clean the V-grooves, and redo the fiber preparation. 2. Cleave angle measurement and alignment operation Examine the condition of the fiber end-face while the splicer is in operation or at a pause. When the threshold of cleave angle error is exceeded an error message is displayed: Left Fiber End-Face Bad or Right Fiber End-Face Bad. If this message displays, redo the fiber cleave. 3. Heat with arc discharge After aligning the fibers, the splicer will produce a high voltage arc discharge to fuse the fibers together. During arc discharge, observe the fiber image on the monitor screen. If some part of the image exhibits an extremely bright glow (hot spot), which is created by burning contaminations on the surface of the end-face of the fiber, there is a possibility that the fiber will be deformed. Although deformation can be detected by the loss estimation function, a re-spice is recommended. Page blackbox.com
