3 Cannon Thermoelectric Bending-Beam Rheometer Meets or Exceeds ASTM D 6648, AASHTO T313, and SHRP Provisions for Flexural Creep Testing of Asphalt Binders Precise, Repeatable Data Environmentally-Friendly Thermoelectric Cooling (No External Refrigeration or Refrigerants Required) Graphical Software for Windows XP Cooling to 36 Celsius in most Laboratory Environments The CANNON Thermoelectric Bending-Beam Rheometer performs low-temperature flexural creep stiffness measurements on asphalt binders as specified in current ASTM D 6648, AASHTO and SHRP methodology. The TE-BBR achieves temperatures from ambient to 36 Celsius using the latest in Peltier technology. Bath fluid, which does not circulate outside the TE-BBR, is cooled by solid-state cooling modules surrounding the bath. Heat is dissipated from the hot side of the thermoelectric modules by circulating a mixture of water and antifreeze through an Air/Water Heat Exchanger. This arrangement facilitates rapid cooling and eliminates costly and potentially hazardous refrigerants. The TE-BBR is capable of controlling temperature within 0.03 Celsius, a precision far exceeding the requirements of current flexural creep test methodology for asphalt binders. The instrument measures specimen beam deflection to within microns (1550 Angstroms) and force to within millinewtons (0.015 grams). The TE-BBR will measure specimen beam loads from 0 to 450 grams. Data acquisition is accomplished internally with information transferred to a host computer via a standard RS-232 interface. The software allows computer control and viewing of parameters through a graphical interface. Reports and graphs can be printed on any Windows-compatible printer. The operational firmware is upgradable updates or changes may be downloaded via computer. The TE-BBR controls air pressure with four pneumatic pressure regulators, permitting the operator to adjust main input line pressure, air bearing pressure, and pressure supporting the loading shaft for a zero condition and a load condition. A magnetic stirring bar at the bottom of the bath vessel circulates bath fluid to ensure uniform temperature distribution throughout the bath. The speed of the stirring bar rotation is adjustable. New Crack Seal Option: Allows for flexural creep testing of 0.5 thick specimens. Excellent for characterizing crack seal creep under load at cold temperatures. Kit includes modified beam support, thin and thick beam for calibration, and all necessary installation hardware and documentation. Support adapter design permits testing of both 0.25 and 0.5 beams. 3

4 The rotational viscometer measures torque required to rotate a spindle immersed in the sample fluid. Dynamic viscosity is proportional to this measured torque. This method gives a rapid and reproducible measurement of viscosity and correlates closely with the time-consuming AASHTO T201 method. Asphalt binder characteristics are measured for ability to be pumped. Viscosity and temperature information can also be used to estimate mixing and compaction temperatures for paving operations. Used in many industries, the versatile Brookfield instruments measure a wide range of viscosities at temperatures from 9 to 260 C (40 to 500 F) using interchangeable spindles and different rotational speeds. Hoskin Scientific offers two of Brookfield's popular instruments for asphalt viscosity use. Range for either model is 100 cp (centipoise) to 40 million cp. Contact Hoskin Scientific for models with higher or lower ranges. The Viscometer RVDV-II+ has 54 selectable speed options from 0.01 to 200 rpm. The two-line LCD continuously displays viscosity (cp or mpaxs), temperature ( C or F), percent torque, shear rate, shear stress, and spindle number. This unit has an accuracy of 1% of range with +/- 0.2% reproducibility and includes a RS-232 interface and recorder outputs for torque and temperature. Four customized test programs may be created on user's PC and downloaded to the viscometer. Test data can be output directly to parallel printer or to PC. Data can also be sent to a 2-Pen Chart Recorder through analog terminals. A built-in RTD temperature probe, stand, guard leg, output cable, carrying case, and certificate of calibration are included. The Ultra-Programmable Rheometer RVDVIII offers 2600 rotational speeds for maximum characterization possibilities. The four-line LCD screen continuously displays viscosity (cp, or mpaxs), temperature ( C or F), percent torque, shear rate, shear stress and spindle number. In addition, yield stress values in Pa, dynes/cm2, and percent torque can be displayed. The unit is accurate to 1% of range with ±0.2% reproducibility and includes a RS-232 interface and recorder outputs for torque and temperature. Up to ten programs may be programmed directly into the Rheometer without PC. Test data can be output directly to parallel printer or to PC Data can also be sent to a 2-Pen Chart Recorder through analog voltage terminals. A built-in RTD temperature probe, stand, guard leg, output cable, carrying case, and certificate of calibration are included. RHEOCALC software is optional and may be used with either model. Written specifically for viscosity determinations, the software automates data collection and allows automated program control for easy creation of multi-step tests. Instantaneous flow curves are created and single-point viscosities may be quickly determined. When used with the RVDVIII, all programmable Rheometer features, as well as the Programmable Thermosel Set can be controlled from the computer keyboard. WINGATHER is simpler, optional software that collects data, creates test records, and provides viscosity flow curves. Data is displayed in 4 plots simultaneously on the screen. Either optional software program requires user's IBM Pentium computer. The Programmable Thermosel Set enables these units to comply with SHRP and ASTM specifications, and allows accurate viscosity determinations at elevated temperatures. The Themosel Set consists of programmable temperature controller, reusable stainless steel sample chamber, five disposable aluminum sample chambers, extracting tools and one stainless steel spindle. The programmable controller can be synchronized with the either Rheometer to provide viscosity data as temperature time with up to 10 temperature set points and hold times. 4

5 Vacuum Degassing Oven Current ASTM and AASHTO specifications require vacuum degassing of asphalt specimens after aging in Pressure Aging Vessels (PAV's). These tabletop vacuum ovens are completely automated and include self-contained vacuum systems. The chambers of both ovens accommodate four specimens in the included containers. Cabinets, chambers and covers are constructed of easily maintained stainless steel. Covers have heat-resistant glass viewing windows for observation during the vacuum degassing process. The Prentex Vacuum Degassing Oven has an air-powered vacuum system that quickly evacuates the chamber to the required 15 kpa (25.5Hg). The control panel features pre-heat, start process, stop, and main power switches. An alarm sounds at the end of process. Time and temperature parameters are programmable from 0-60 minutes and ambient to 200 C (392 F). A sample rack and four 236ml (8oz) sample tins are included. The Vacuum Degassing Oven uses an electrically powered vacuum system to rapidly evacuate the chamber to the required 15 kpa (25.5Hg). Ship Wt.: 185lbs (84kg). Pressure Aging Vessel Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV's) use heated, pressurized air to simulate long-term oxidative aging of asphalt binders. PAV ovens consist of an ASME Code stainless steel pressure vessel, in a stainless steel cabinet with encased band heaters. Hoskin offers two fully integrated PAV ovens to meet the demands of busy labs with high test volumes. Both state of the art systems meet all ASTM and AASHTO requirements and include platinum RTD devices to insure accurate temperature values to ±0.1 C. Pressure relief valves and high-temperature thermal shut down controls are included as standard safety features. The Prentex Pressure Aging Vessel is supplied with a remote-mounting controller that automates the entire test procedure from initialization through to shut-down. The stainless steel cabinet measures 24x16x17.5in (610x406x444mm) WxDxH. The Prentex PAV includes a set of ten TFOT specimen pans and a ten-pan holder. Maximum power consumption is 650 watts. Bottled compressed air with at least 325psi (2.24 MPa) pressure and a regulator must be user provided. 6 Dynamic Shear Rheometer Automated CVO model has several operating modes and integrated touchpad controller Air-Bearing model has wider capabilities for research and more accurate testing Lower-cost Mechanical Bearing model is adequate for most QC/QA testing of asphalt binders A Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) is essential for Superpave determination of linear viscoelastic properties of aged or unaged asphalt binders (modified or unmodified) in the temperature range of 5-85 C. When testing specimens for compliance to AASHTO MP1, a disc of asphalt binder is confined between circular parallel plates and tested at a specified temperature. Dynamic shear modulus is determined by applying a known torque to oscillate one of the plates and measuring the resulting strain. Phase angle, in radians or degrees difference between sinusoidal stress and strain, is also measured. Operate the instrument in strain control (measuring resultant stress) or stress control (measuring resultant strain) modes. Easily perform temperature sweep tests for AASHTO R29. The versatile system also has non-shrp test modes, useful for research purposes. Bohlin Systems include a measuring drive unit and a circulator system to immerse the sample in a temperature controlled fluid (usually water). This ensures that sample heating or cooling occurs uniformly and steadily from both above and below the specimens and that temperature stability is better than ±0.03%. Upper stainless steel measurement plates of 8mm and 25mm diameters, lower sample holder plates of 8mm and 25mm and a temperature RTD detector are included. A "NO GAP" feature frees the operator from re-zeroing the instrument gap with changes in temperature or when upper or lower plates are removed or replaced. The two SHRP testing positions are clearly marked, easily selected, and locked. Latest ASTM and AASHTO protocols are built into software and PG Grading is automatic. The Air Bearing Rheometer has a wider range of operating specifications for more diverse applications, including research, and is recommended when an air supply is available. The Automatic Air DSR is automated with integrated touchpad controls and electronics so no separate electronics box with cables is required. As supplied by Hoskin Scientific, the CVO has several operating modes making it superior for ease of performing Superpave work. It is easily configured to suit a wide range of performance with materials such as cutbacks, emulsions, greases, talloils, neat polymers, adhesives, etc. Inquire for accessory CVO options for use beyond Superpave binder testing. Performance of all models is equal for Superpave specifications. Inquire for addition of Research Software options. A Silicon Rubber Mold Set and Computer/Printer System are required. A Reference Thermal Detector Probe is recommended. The Reference Thermal Detector Probe is a thermistor mounted in a silicone wafer calibrated to 0.1 C. This device acts as a dummy specimen for direct in-place calibration of the RTD temperature detector. The Silicone Rubber Mold Set is flexible, tear-resistant, and stocked for immediate shipment. The Viscosity Standard is designed specifically for the DSR and is NIST traceable. The 2.7 million centipoise fluid is available in 15ml bottles. The specifications for temperature and angular positions exceed Superpave requirements. Included software with all units is MS Windows based and includes a special Superpave test mode. 6

7 Rolling Thin Film Oven Hoskin offers the Rolling Thin Film Ovens for thin film and loss on heating tests. SHRP Superpave requires the Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) for simulation of short-term aging of asphalt binders that occurs during mixing and lay-down of hot mix asphalt. Ovens include a flow meter, moisture indicator, and air pressure gauge with regulator, ready for connection to a dry air supply. The circular test rack holds up to 8 RTFO Bottles (included) and rotates at 15 rpm. A digital temperature controller, solid state heater and 200w heating element control temperature to ±1 F at 325 F (±0.5 C at 163 C). Double wall design has a baked enameled steel exterior.
