Container Gardening 101 Thursday, April 10; 6 8 p.m., GSC Saturday, May 10; 2 4 p.m., BGP Container gardening is great for beginning gardeners, apartment dwellers or anyone looking to add extra space or variety to his or her garden. This class will introduce you to the many benefits of container gardening and cover everything you need to get started, from choosing containers and crops to ongoing maintenance. Start Seeds Indoors Saturday, March 1; 2 4 p.m., BGP Get a head start on spring and summer by starting your garden indoors now. Our instructor will provide step-by-step instruction on how to grow your veggie garden from seeds. Topics include finding the right supplies, setting up your own indoor growing space including light and heat requirements, caring for your seedlings, preparing plants to move outside and transplanting. Smart Garden Planning Thursday, March 27; 6:30 8:30 p.m., GSC How can you make the most of the space you have? Learn how to choose the best location for your garden and which crops to plant. This class will also address important considerations such as crop rotation, succession planting and the different requirements of cool and warm weather crops. Students will have an opportunity to practice building their own garden plan and come away with tools to continue seasonal crop planning. We will also explore the permaculture concept of plant guilds and discuss how to use nature as a model for your garden. Now is the perfect time to begin your hive to enjoy throughout the year. Honeybees are essential pollinators for your garden. Their honey is a delicious and valuable product you can harvest at home and share with your family and friends. Expert beekeeper Corky Luster will cover the fundamentals of beekeeping, including equipment, parts of the hive, bee food, seasonal management, apiary location and city codes. Beekeeping 201 Thursday, March 6; 6:30 8:30 p.m., GSC Saturday, March 22; 2 4 p.m., GSC You ve decided to raise honey bees and started planning for your new hive what s next? Get started with confidence by taking this follow-up course to Beekeeping 101. Learn how to install bee packages, inspect your hive during the first few critical weeks and maintain your hive through spring and early summer. Find out exactly what it takes to keep chickens in the city so you can collect delicious eggs from your own backyard. This class is an introduction to caring for adult chickens, including chicken physiology, behavior, health and nutrition, and coop requirements. Learn the most important considerations in caring for a small flock of hens in a limited space and leave with the knowledge you need to start your own flock. $40 INDIVIDUALS, $30 SEATTLE TILTH MEMBERS, $60 HOUSEHOLD PRICE FOR TWO ADULTS Poultry Health Peeks Wednesday, April 30; 6:30 8:30 p.m., GSC Look at a chicken--from tail to beak--with avian veterinarian, Dr. Bruce Singbeil, who will introduce you to the basics of poultry health throughout a chicken s lifespan. Topics include nutrition, health management, parasites and common backyards flock ailments and diseases. You will learn when to seek help for your birds and what is available. Raise City Ducks Sunday, March 2; 2 4 p.m., BGP Ducks provide excellent pest control for your garden and lay large, rich eggs that are great for baking. They also can become charming and fun backyard companions. Raise City Goats Saturday, April 19; private residence in Madrona Learn what it takes to keep miniature goats for fun, food or fiber. This class will introduce you to the basics of keeping mini-goats including city regulations, miniature breeds, yard and shelter requirements, feeding, breeding, milking and keeping your herd healthy. This class will be held at a private residence so you can see an example of goats in action. Participants will leave the class with the basic information needed to decide if being an urban goat-herder is right for you. Raise City Rabbits Sunday, March 9; 2 4 p.m., BGP Rabbits can be great additions to your urban farm as both livestock and pets. They turn garden trimmings into the best fertilizer, grow wooly fiber that can be spun and knitted into clothing, and can be harvested for meat and pelts. This class covers choosing breeds for specific purposes, housing requirements, feeding, health issues and best practices for harvesting different products. This introductory class is includes an opportunity to meet some heritage breed American Chinchillas and Satin Angora Fiber rabbits. Participants will leave the class with the basic information needed to decide if keeping rabbits is right for you and how to get started. Grow Mushrooms Saturday, March 29; 2 4 p.m., BGP Saturday, April 12; 10 a.m. noon, GSC Saturday, May 31; 10 a.m. noon, GSC It is easier to grow tasty edible mushrooms at home or in your garden than you might think! Edible mushrooms add valuable nutrients to your diet and offer endless options in the kitchen. Learn which types of mushrooms grow well in our area and the equipment that you will need to grow them. We will also cover the fascinating basics of mushroom science and how fungi function in nature. We will discuss growing mushrooms on logs and stumps, sawdust and wood chips, coffee grounds and other natural culture methods. Learn how you can fill that shady corner of your garden with edible fungi and gain a fun new hobby! Grow Edible Perennials: Vegetables Wednesday, April 2; 6 8 p.m., BGP Perennial vegetables require less maintenance than annuals and can add new and unusual variety to your garden. This class will introduce you to growing and harvesting all the different parts of perennial plants. From early spring shoots, like asparagus and rhubarb, to edible flowers like daylilies and artichokes, you ll be harvesting year-round with less overall work. Urban Weeds and Wild Foods Part 1: Identify and Harvest Saturday, April 26; 12 2 p.m., GSC Identify and gather some of our city s most common and delicious edible weeds. Why fight the weeds in your lawn when you can eat them?! Join Front Yard Forager author Melany Vorass-Herrera at the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford and learn how to identify and gather some of the most common edible weeds and wild foods available in the city. This hands-on workshop includes discussion on gathering ethics, local rules and regulations, safety, and general information about how to cook with weeds.
