We discussed and explored insects that feed on black flies. Pupils were asked to find ladybugs, explore and discuss the different stages of life (larvae, pupal/junior and adult). Questions asked by the pupils: How long does a ladybug live for? Why are ladybugs red? Why do they have wings? Why are the ladybug larvae white? Pupils were asked to research this questions and present answer at the following session. Pupils used magnifying glasses to investigate the different stages of life. The ladybugs were released onto the climbing bean crop to feed on the black flies. We discussed the different insects and their habitats. Yr 1 shared information on why worms are important for soil and plants. YR2 - YR6 Garden care.

Pupils sang the harvest song celebrating the season! What happens in autumn?

Pupils discussed and explored different crops harvested in autumn. Pupils designed and decorated harvest boxes to showcase the crops at the harvest assembly.

Pupils gained knowledge of and investigated the different shapes and size of seeds and bulbs.

We discussed the process of germination, learning about the importance of light, temperature, sun and water.

Pupils were encouraged to investigate plant structure. We discussed the process of germination, learning about the importance of light, temperature, sun and water. Pupils compared seed germination to the process of growth in humans. Pupils gained practical knowledge and explored the materials that make up compost/dirt. What are green and browns? What are the conditions required to create healthy compost i.e. Moisture, consistency, temperature and air. Pupils investigated micro life (worms, beetles, etc) that live under the surface and support the decomposition of the materials that create well balanced nutrient rich compost. 2

Pupils actively prepared a raised bed before planting garlic and onion bulbs, feeding it with compost; raking in it to a thinner tilt and consolidating it. Pupils made up a song whilst undertaking the activity, called dab the earth! Pupils gained knowledge and discussed plant structure (roots, shoots and leaves) describing the process of photosynthesis and why leaves are green. At the end of the session we shared a fact about onions. They support the human body to fight against colds! 3

Pupils covered compost heap with tapeline to encourage micro life, protecting it from the elements and seed dispersion.
