1 UW-Extension Wood County Master Gardener Association Wood County UW Extension June 2016 WCMGV Program Information Tour of Sue Haydock s City Yard June 28: Business meeting, 7:00 pm Garden Tour 7:30 pm Cook Ave, WR For the 30 years that Sue and her husband have lived on Cook Street, their yard has gone through many changes. Come and tour their yard to see how Sue has addressed the challenges of shade, water and poor soil by building raised beds for flowers and vegetables making their yard a haven from busy Wisconsin Rapids in spite of its being only a few blocks from 8th Street! She has volunteered to be one of our stops on the 2016 Garden Walk so some of us will be lucky to see her gardens twice. Driving directions: Going toward Wal-Mart on 8th street, turn left onto Airport Ave. Continue on Airport Ave until 14th St So. Turn right on 14th St S. Continue on for 2 blocks and turn right onto Cook Ave. The first driveway on the right is 1330 Cook Av. It has two driveways. Wear your good walking shoes because Pam Resech, the Natural Resources Educator at the Mead Wildlife Center will be taking us on a tour and telling us about "Native Prairie Plants." This State Wildlife Area is the third largest in Wisconsin. Covering 33,000 acres it includes parts of Marathon, Portage and Wood Counties. The Mead Wildlife Area is home to a variety of grassland types that provide critical habitat for prairie and grassland wildlife. The variety of colors painted on the prairie canvas is a sight to behold as well as the habitat for many insects and birds that rely on the blooming flowers. You may wish to bring along baggies to collect some seed samples to start your own canvas or add to your existing canvas. 2 From the President s Notebook June 20 is the first day of summer. As I drove to Marshfield for a meeting today, I noticed a sure sign that summer is here farmers had numerous hay fields cut down the harvest begins! Our spring seminar was educational and fun with very unique and interesting subjects. A delicious variety of treats on the refreshment table enhanced the morning and along with tea and coffee made the social time very inviting for all. Thanks to both committee members for your support of this seminar! Thanks to members who made the treats. October 15 the fall seminar will be held at the UW Marshfield site. Please note the date on your calendar. More details will be posted in the newsletter as we get closer to that date. The WCMGV Garden Walk is July 9. The GW committee and numerous volunteer helpers are all ready to host this grand event. The garden walk is our major fund raiser. Members who are not on the committee are welcome to earn extra hours by offering to help during the garden walk day even an hour or two will help! The monies raised are used for all of our projects and other events throughout the area. Thanks in advance for your help on garden walk day! We have a wonderful summer of events planned. Our June meeting will be held at our very own MGV, Sue Haydock s Garden. Sue has also volunteered to be a garden walk host this year, so we will enjoy her garden twice. Thanks, Sue. Along with the many gardens we also have Art in the Garden Boutique set-up at one garden. Denise Larson and her group of talented crafters have created some very unusual garden art which will be for sale at the boutique. Each year we ask WCMGVs to enhance the variety of items for sale at the boutique by cleaning out their garden sheds and donating any gently used items they no longer use or need. For your convenience Bob and Ruth Cline will have their empty van at the June meeting, so bring your containers, garden art, books, magazines, garden tools, small barn windows, old coffee or tea pots, old pails, small benches, stepping stones or whatever and stuff the van. We will store, clean, mark items and bring them to the garden walk boutique. Any questions about suitability of an item, please fill free to contact the Clines. At the May meeting a form entitled Wood County Master Gardener-Year End Tally of Community Education was handed out (see page 5). Since that date, several questions have come up about the form. I will try and answer those questions. In 2015 Teri suggested that three of the WCMGV projects be involved with a pilot program regarding keeping track of any type of education that the project members were involved with during the year. The projects that agreed to participate were Lester Library at Rome and Vesper and the Community Gardens in Wisconsin Rapids. The project leaders kept track of the following activities: number of people attending programs, or stopped by the gardens while they were working, the number of people who asked garden questions, and any public contact that involved gardening in anyway. The three project leaders filled out the form and gave it to Teri. Teri included the information from the three projects and added that information to the end of the year report that she submits to the State. I also used the information in the WCMGV Annual Accomplishment report that I am required to prepare and report to the State. Teri thought this idea/form would be an excellent way to document the educational activities that go on within the WCMGV projects throughout Wood County and surrounding borders. This form doesn t require project leaders/teams to do anything differently at their project, such as present a formal program. All that is needed is to just track and note any informal interaction that occurs between the project members and the public during the times they are working in the garden. If you are a project leader, use the form that was handed out to record your information and then submit along with your project forms by October 1 st. In order for the form to fit all project situations it may need to be updated for the next year. Please do your best this year to note your information on the form. Add any comments (about how you would like the form to be set-up for the next year) on the back of the form. Thanks very much for helping get this new idea off the ground in Your effort and input are appreciated. The data collected will be posted in our annual accomplishment report as a total number for Wood County not by project! The form is available on the Continued on page 3 2

3 Continued from page 2 WCMGV website under forms. Looking ahead to July meeting, the program committee has a grand outing planned for us. We will venture out into The Mead Wild Center native gardens. You may wish to bring bug and tick protection as we will be walking on the trails. You are welcome to bring your own water bottle if you wish. Check out the detailed information about the July event in this newsletter. This is a true opportunity for the photographers in our group. Hope to see you all there! Bring a guest if you wish! Whatever Your Gift What is that you hold in your hand? Nothing, you say? Look again. Every hand holds some special gift A hammer, a broom, a pen, A hoe, a scalpel, an artist s brush A needle, a microscope, A violin s bow, a way with words In the giving of faith and hope What is that you hold in your hand? Whatever your gift may be, It can open your door to abundant life You hold in your hand the key.. By Helen Lowrie Marshall The garden walk refreshment committee will be asking for refreshments and help at the refreshment table on July 9 th. There will be a sign-up sheet at the June meeting. August is our grand Potluck/Picnic. This year it will be held at the Vesper Park. The program will be an educational tour of both the park gardens and the library gardens in Vesper. Tomato tasting will be an added attraction this year! More information will be available in the July newsletter. It is not too early to start thinking about the fall plant sale. Mary Czaja will be providing us with scarecrow skeletons at an upcoming meeting all we need to do is go home and design the scarecrow outerwear and bring the creation to the fall plant sale! More info coming! As always, please contact me with any questions. Enjoy summer and your garden! Ruth Cline New UW-Extension Policy UW Extension Update: New policy regarding personal flash drives. The UW Extension/Wood County Courthouse IT Department has put a policy in place that they can no longer take data off of personal flash drives. If anyone creates a flyer (for example) that they wanted printed, they would need to it to UW Extension. Our current contact is Allison Henke: ahenke@co.wood.wi.us. Thanks for understanding! Questions, please contact Ruth Cline U-W Extension This is high season for Master Gardeners. The exposure that you experience at activities during and in preparation for the garden walk is greatly appreciated. Also your work with all the projects that need your efforts this time of year is just the best. Master Gardeners that come into the UW -Extension office to assist with the home horticulture questions are greatly appreciated especially while we have a vacancy in the horticulture educator position. Of course you are fielding many questions as you assist with projects that are not as noticed by Extension as when you actually are in our office. We appreciate all of it! As a Master Gardener volunteer you are participating in a service and education based organization. As a volunteer you selflessly give, but hopefully your knowledge base and your capacity are increased while you do volunteer efforts. You are sustained and grow through the interaction with the other MG volunteers. This is the win-win that is the Master Gardener program. Matt Lippert Wood Co. 10 WCMGV Media Guidelines The Wood County Master Gardener Association is a non-profit organization with a mission to educate and share information with its members and the community alike. We are a diverse group interested in the latest research-based horticultural information. In addition, it is our charge to promote the UW Extension from which we are founded. As our mission states, education is a prime focus in all that we do, whether it is presenting seminars and demonstrations, staffing information booths, sponsoring children s horticultural activities, hosting our garden walk, writing newspaper and newsletter articles, or by simply modeling good horticultural practices at our project gardens. In addition, we now have an online presence, through our website and Facebook page, to promote our organization and educational opportunities and subjects. With this wide expanse of visibility and, as more of us become involved in generating this information, we must always be cognizant of our responsibilities related to privacy, copyrights, and plagiarism. The UWEX provides support for this by maintaining resources to guide you in writing and printing acceptable information and pictures. Links to this information can now be found on our website by clicking on the Forms and Documents tab and scrolling down to the Writing and Photo Resources subheading. One of the main components of this is the requirement to have written permission of an individual (members included) before we are allowed to use his/her photo image in any of our publications or online entities. Oral consent is not adequate. This may affect you if you are inclined to post pictures of yourself or other MG members on our private Facebook page or you want to include pictures of people in a pamphlet, handout, video or some other tool you are designing to highlight your MG project. A file with the signed permission forms will be maintained. If you choose to do so, you can sign a form at a general meeting or you can print a form from our website ( Photo Release link under Forms and Documents ) and return the form to our Treasurer. In general, these are the rules: if an individual is identifiable in an image published in an electronic or hardcopy format, and they are not employed by UWEX, you must have a signed release form on file. Photographs taken at public events and in public spaces do not require written consent unless an individual is singled out and identifiable in the photo. Consent is not needed to photograph groups of people in a public place. Individuals are protected by privacy laws in settings where they might reasonably expect privacy. When in doubt, get written consent. In regard to pictures obtained from the internet to use in your projects or handouts, be aware that some pictures are copyrighted and it is illegal to use the image without permission. Again, refer to the resources listed on our website to assist you in finding suitable picture to reproduce. 10

11 In representing or discussing WCMGVA or UWEX in your publications, in person, or online, please be aware of these expectations; A professional image/positive impression should be presented to ensure that respect for our members, our organization, and the UW Extension is shown. Comments or communication by a member on his/her private social media accounts should also refer to WCMGVA, its members, and UWEX in a respectful way. Follow copyright laws and be vigilant about plagiarism (for newsletter, newspaper, website articles or any other educational handouts), including pictures obtained from internet. Our public online sites (our website and public Facebook page) will be clearly tied to our mission. Features will focus on our organizational activities and educational offerings with information from expert or academic sources only. Administrators only will post to public side of Facebook. Members can submit items of interest for consideration. Members that desire to present garden related information from the mass media, or personal/private sources should do so on their own social media or on the private group page. Private Facebook group: Posting is allowed by members of the group. Content guidelines are looser, but Administrator has the authority to remove any postings or part of posting. Members should use discretion in regard to content and pictures, keeping in mind our mission, our image, and copyright issues. Fall Plant Sale Photo by S Chia/Flickr/Creative Commons Photo: Andrew Bowden, Creative Commons It seems like a crime to be thinking of fall when summer has just begun. This is just a gentle reminder to keep the Fall Plant Sale in mind when you are doing your routine gardening projects. We are asking each member to donate a dozen plants to the sale. These can be perennials or houseplants. Please have your plants labeled. A picture of the plant in bloom will help it sell. Many plants are very healthy and green but get lost without a little color. We also are looking for dried materials that we can make into fall bouquets. If you have access to small hay bales that you would be willing to donate or lend, we will use them to display the scarecrows. I will bring wood strips to the summer meetings to use for the scarecrows. They were a big hit last year. I heard that two sold while Appolonia was carrying them in. Any other fall related items or crafts would be appreciated. We had a very successful sale last year thanks to all of your hard work. Any questions or help with "digs" can be directed to Mary Czaja by or at

12 Garden Walk Update Plans are coming together nicely, but we need your help with a few items to make our day at success. Advertising Help: A new idea this year is to place yard signs promoting the Garden Walk in strategic locations around the community. The signs are similar to for sale signs posted by realtors. Can we place one in your yard or a business with which you are friendly where there will be a lot of traffic? The signs will be brought to the June meeting to be distributed. We hope to use these every year and that they will be one more method of getting the word out about this important fundraiser. Art in the Garden Boutique needs: Gently-used garden related items are still much needed. Books, tools, pots, pictures, decor, birdhouses, plants, etc are welcome. The sooner we get them, the better, so they can be priced items ahead of the Walk. Please bring items to the June meeting or contact Barb Herreid or Denise Larson to make other arrangements. Please be sure any pots or containers are clean and serviceable. New! Silent Auction! Now is your chance to bid on a variety of special items, including one of Famia Marx beautiful cement and mosaic glass stepping stones, especially made for the Garden Walk. Might you have an item to contribute that would be an interesting or fun auction item? If so, please contact Denise Larson. Set Up Help: Additional muscle-power is needed on Friday to help set up tables and canopies and then again at 3:30pm on Saturday to help take them down again. If you can assist or have a helpful spouse or teen willing to share some time with us for one or both days, please contact Barb Herreid for where and when details. Growing Friends Community Gardens The Growing Friends Community Gardens is in need of wood pallets to make compost bins. If anyone has any or knows of anyone who has any to donate please contact Karen Houdek at either khoudek842@aol.com or Any Master Gardeners interested in earning hours at the Growing Friends Community Garden in Wisconsin Rapids, we need volunteers to help water, weed and harvest our food pantry beds, herb beds, and butterfly garden. We are hoping to get enough volunteers to make a rotating schedule through the summer. Please contact Team Leader Karen Houdek at khoudek842@aol.com or

Astrantia, Astrantia major Astrantia is a genus of 8 or 9 species in the carrot family (Apiaceae). One of the most commonly available as a garden ornamental is A. major, native to mountain meadows, grasslands, woodland clearings and along streams in Europe and western Asia. With a common name of masterwort (also the common name for Peucedanum ostruthium) or great masterwort, or just astrantia, this herbaceous perennial is hardy in zones 4-7. The much less commonly available A. maxima is a bit taller than A. major, with flowers held not as far above the basal clump Plants grow in mounded clumps up to 1½ feet high and spread by stolons. The 3-6 long basal leaves are palmate with 3-7 deeply divided lobes and toothed edges, but the sparse leaves on the branched flower stems are narrow with three shallow divisions. The medium green foliage remains attractive throughout the season, but does not develop interesting fall color. by Susan.Mahr Astrantia major in bloom. 14
