About this Workbook Throughout the course, we set you Self-Assessment exercises. This is to make sure you understand each topic. There is space within this workbook for writing your answers, though a piece of scrap paper for notes might be handy. You ll find that the exercises are sequentially numbered. Exercise 1.1 is the first exercise in Module 1, and so on. You can ignore the Workbook until we ask you to do an exercise in it. Note that we omit most of the exercises that require only a one-word answer. If you chose to do so, you can scribble those answers in your modules. And there s not much point in trying to read the workbook from start to finish. It won t make much sense. But by all means, flick through the pages, to see the kind of topics it includes. If you have any difficulty, please refer back to the module. Good luck with the exercises! Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 1
EXERCISE 1.1 Find out information about the following people: Andre Le Notre Andrea Palladio Rev. William Gilpin Find out information about the following places: Hampton Court Castle Howard Chatsworth Jardin des Tuilleries If you re unsure how to do this, ask a librarian in a public library. There is space provided below for you to make notes. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 2
EXERCISE 1.2 Find out where the local gardens of interest are in your area and when it is best to visit them. You might start by contacting the local tourist information office or the RHS. Write your findings in the space below. EXERCISE 1.3 Look at your garden, or someone else s. Are there any examples of movement, direction and rhythm? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 3
EXERCISE 1.4 In Figure 1.3 how many of the blocks in the left hand box could you change to red, before the shapes gave no meaning at all and become just a jumble of different shapes? EXERCISE 1.5 Look at your garden, or someone else s. Does it have unity, symmetry or balance? Could your improve it, or make the design stronger? EXERCISE 1.6 Look in your garden for plants of different colour. Describe the colour of the overall appearance of some plants and list them here. For example, you might have a rusty red rose bush or lavender coloured wild bluebells. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 4
EXERCISE 1.7 Here, state two other sets of harmonising colours. and and Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 5
EXERCISE 2.1 We have used metres as a unit of measure. But if you prefer to work in imperial, please feel free to change the units. For example, you can use 34 feet instead of 34 metres. 1. Mr & Mrs Smith have a rectangular garden which measures 34 metres in length by 18 metres in width. What is its area? 2. Mr & Mrs Clark have a rectangular garden which measures 25.5 metres in length by 24 metres in width. What is its area? 3. Mr Jackson has a triangular garden. Assuming that the triangle is a right angled triangle, is 35 metres long and 12 metres wide, what is the area of the triangle? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 6
EXERCISE 2.2 Find a point in your garden. Measure its distance from two other points, such as the ends of your house. If you can, plot its location on a sheet of graph paper. Use a scale of 1:100 to do this. In other words, 5 metres on the ground will be 5cm on the paper. For this exercise, you will need a pair of compasses, which you will find in a stationers like WH Smith. EXERCISE 2.3 As we are about to see, triangulation is not the only method of accurate measuring. However if triangulation is so quick, easy and accurate, why do we need to know of another way? See if you can think of a reason. Then look at the end of this module for the answer. EXERCISE 2.4 Imagine you re setting up a 3,4,5 triangle, using a tape. You ll be using 1 metre as your base unit. What would be the measurement on the tape at point A, B and C in Figure 2.7? The tape starts at point A, goes to point B, then to point C and finally back to point A. EXERCISE 2.5 Take the same object you measured in Exercise 2.2. Now plot it on a sheet of paper, using a chain survey. You will need a tape measure for this. EXERCISE 2.6 The distance from the top of the first staff to the ground is 1.2 metres. For the staff at the bottom of the slope, the distance from the top of the staff to the ground is 4 metres. What is the total difference in height? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 7
Exercise 2.7 Look at the drawing below. 1. What is the area of the existing patio? TIP: as it s an irregular shape, you ll have to divide it into more than one piece. 2. Is the garden sloping towards or away from the house? TIP: look at the figures in red. The red height measurements indicate those which have been arrived at following your calculations at home, and which you would show on your final working drawing. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 8
EXERCISE 3.1 Study Figure 3.1 below and answer the following questions: 1. Which way is the rear of the house facing? 2. Which way is the shed door facing? 3. The kitchen has two windows. Which way do they face? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 9
EXERCISE 3.2 What aspect does your garden have? Do a rough drawing of your house and garden(s), and draw a compass pointing north. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 10
EXERCISE 3.3 What impact does aspect have on your garden? Write your comments in your below. EXERCISE 3.4 What is permeable fill, and what is its purpose? Write your answer below. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 11
EXERCISE 3.5 Give one advantage and one disadvantage of a clay soil. EXERCISE 3.6 Briefly describe your own topsoil and subsoil, in terms of ph, drainage and soil type. Does this favor any particular types of plants? Have you made any efforts to improve the quality of the soil? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 12
EXERCISE 4.1 My paper size is going to be A3. I want to draw my garden that measures 28m by 43m, at a scale of 1:100. Will it fit on the paper at this scale? You will find the answer at the end of the module. EXERCISE 4.2 Try this, to make sure you ve got the hang of things. In real life, what size is the diameter of the circle, if it has been drawn at a scale of 1:50? cm? 2. 3 metres? metres? 6 cm You will find an answer at the end of the module. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 13
EXERCISE 4.3 Before moving on, have a go at drawing one or two symbols to represent some objects (such as a conifer, bench or pergola). Then compare them with the ones given in the module book. This will demonstrate to you just how many variations there are. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 14
EXERCISE 4. 4 Mahonia 'Charity' is an evergreen spiny shrub, which grows to around 2.4 metres in diameter. Now that you have thought a little about different types of symbol, think of three symbols to represent this plant. The symbols must be different from those we have already looked at so far, and also different from each other. Once you have decided upon your symbols, state why you have chosen those shapes, and then draw each at 1:100, 1:50 and 1:75. Your symbols should represent the plant s maximum size i.e. 2.4m in diameter. There is no set answer for this exercise. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 15
EXERCISE 5.1 Below, state some reasons why wildlife might be drawn to a living boundary. EXERCISE 5.2 Examine the windbreaks or screening in your garden. To what extent do they conform to the comments made on the previous pages? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 16
EXERCISE 5.3 Below, write down a fruit or vegetable you could add to your garden, using a growing method that would take little room. Describe where in the garden you would place it. EXERCISE 5.4 Take one area of your garden. Are the plants multi-coloured, or mono-coloured? Describe the plants and their colours. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 17
EXERCISE 5.5 What is the mono colour approach? Give three advantages of its use. EXERCISE 5.6 Below, name three ways in which a climbing plant might support itself. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 18
EXERCISE 5.7 What function does your lawn fulfil? Does it have a purpose? Should you alter it? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 19
EXERCISE 5.8 Find a plant locally that would survive in a harsh environment. Describe how it is adapted for this. Is its current environment harsh? Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 20
EXERCISE What is the advantage and disadvantage of laying paving on just a bed of sand? 2. Under what circumstances would you lay paving over concrete and hardcore. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 21
EXERCISE 6.2 Take a look at the two sets of pattern below and see if you can spot the common features of each set. The answer can be found in your module book. Figure 6. 5: Set 1 Figure 6.5: Set 2 Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 22
EXERCISE 6.3 Give two reasons why you might use decking instead of paving. EXERCISE 6.4 To start up a portfolio of materials, collect the following: 5 types of gravel 5 types of flagstone 5 types of block paving 5 types of walling brick suitable for the garden For each of these items get details of: Cost per unit Sizes available Price per square metre, if available* *Some price lists will include a price per square metre for paving and walling. This is a useful figure to know for giving approximate costs to jobs. You may want to use the table provided below. Certificate in Garden Design Workbook Page 23
