THANK YOU TO OUR 2018 SITE HOSTS FOR SHARING YOUR BEAUTIFUL GARDEN WITH US! About Whitby in Bloom Whitby in Bloom is a civic beautification program that promotes environmental responsibility and civic pride. It is based on the international Communities in Bloom program. The success of our program is attributed to the dedicated efforts of volunteers and the participation of homeowners throughout Whitby who graciously open their picturesque gardens to the public. 4 1 41 Petaluma Court Cedarbrook Trail A cedar forest and stream frame this impressive home and the surrounding professional landscaping. Massive limestone blocks retain the various plants and trees as the garden works its way up a hill. Columnar oaks, Japanese maples, burning bush and blue spruce are used abundantly to give the garden a sense of peace and tranquility. A kidney-shaped pool, hot tub and fire pit along with many mature rockery plants make this large property a relaxing escape from today s busy world. It is worth the trip to Ashburn! The long winding driveway at this multi-acre property passes mature willows, blue spruce, cedars and maples before arriving at the lovely home, maintained and landscaped by the homeowners. Hosta, pink carnations, roses and a variety of perennials thrive under the weeping beech, mulberry and many welltrimmed shrubs. An orchard of peach, nectarine, cherry and apple trees is newly planted a short distance from the inviting pool and pool shed. Annuals, hanging baskets and plenty of bird feeders decorate the pagoda and pool shed. If you are lucky, you may even meet Ben, the St. Bernard! PAGE WHITBY IN BLOOM GARDEN TOUR
3 27 Sinden Drive 4 40 Lyndhurst Crescent A small Brooklin property with plenty of charm! With a design background, this homeowner is passionate about creating unusual vistas including six fairy gardens, succulents on a shovel, chair and birdhouse, and a colourful bed of annuals. These are surrounded by mulched pathways and decorative shrubs such as pink beauty potentilla and corkscrew willow. There are numerous perennials including a bed of Japanese anemone. This year s Pantone colour of ultra violet will be featured in assorted annuals and accents throughout the gardens. If you are looking for ways to change up your garden, this is where you can find some very interesting ideas! This garden is a haven of peace and tranquility. Mature birch, blue spruce, weeping Cyprus, Japanese maple, cedars and pines surround the back garden, giving privacy to the large deck. Comfortable furniture enhances the quiet, picturesque sitting area surrounding the large pool and entertainment area. Pots of colourful annuals are artistically placed. Grasses, azaleas, hydrangea and eye-catching urns are interspersed with various statuary. The waterfall cascades into the pool while the large Buddha meditates. Other sculptures are tucked between mature plants helping to give this garden Asian sophistication WHITBY IN BLOOM GARDEN TOUR PAGE 5

5 575 Rossland Road East, Town Hall 6 91 Ribblesdale Drive Holy Family Parish Earlier this year, the Town of Whitby became Canada s 10th bee city and the first in Durham Region. Our goal is to protect pollinators and their habitats. This educational pollinator garden is located on the south side of Town Hall and has specific plants that attract bees, butterflies, moths and other beneficial insects. One of the Town s gardeners who is also a beekeeper in her spare time will be on hand to show you which plants are most appropriate for a pollinator garden. Butterfly bush, Joe Pye weed, agastache (hyssop), first knight daylily and wild bergamot are planted here. Parking is available at the Civic Recreation Complex. The garden can be found using the path behind Town Hall. Holy Family Parish Church has lush garden beds, tended with a great deal of love by a hard-working group of volunteers. Framing the beds are limelight hydrangea, rose of Sharon, black lace elderberry, butterfly bush, and green yucca with their enormous, tall flowers. There is lush colour with roses and numerous perennials including hostas, lilies, black-eyed Susan, Japanese blood grass, as well as dahlias and dusty miller. Many of the plants have been donated by parishioners. Bark mulch covers the beds to lessen the work for these dedicated volunteers. Drop by to see what team effort can accomplish! PAGE WHITBY IN BLOOM GARDEN TOUR
7 6 Martinet Street 8 16 Milne Street This garden is overflowing with colourful perennials. Hostas, coneflower, rudbeckia, phlox, sedums, and daylilies are just a few of the perennials that are accented with intriguing garden artwork a water tap that produces a crystal water droplet, ladies created from hardened fabric, numerous hand-painted rocks depicting various bugs or words, birdbaths and re-purposed cups and saucers. The mirrors on the fence reflect the vibrant colour throughout. Along with the hydrangeas and established trees, there is a mature pussy willow tree with silver bark. The deck has numerous boxes and urns full of bright annuals. Drop by to enjoy a fun garden! This corner lot has lots of charm and colourful perennials. Stroll along the sidewalk to see how much this homeowner decorates the neighbourhood with her gardening expertise. Coneflowers, rudbeckia, daylilies, variegated iris and yucca will brighten your day. The front garden has a collection of miniature hosta, including Babyface, Snow Mouse and Bright Lights, most of which are labelled. There is an Autumn blaze maple, two purple beech, a thick cedar hedge, and clematis. An herb garden and veggie patch are located in the back along with urns of colourful annuals. This homeowner is very knowledgeable and passionate about gardening WHITBY IN BLOOM GARDEN TOUR PAGE 9
9 800 Athol Street Palace Street This delightful property with a charming doll-like house has an attractive grass-free front garden and gently sloping back yard. The homeowner is an avid gardener who has many interesting and unusual plants, including European ginger, dwarf conifers and tree peonies. Ornamental Hakone grasses, a green Japanese maple and David Austin roses thrive in the sunny front garden. The back garden, shaded by mature neighbouring trees has ivy, clematis, an extensive hosta collection and many other shade-tolerant plants. A quaint, colourful garden shed, a screened gazebo, numerous arbours covered with vines and clematis, and a large deck are all unique to this secluded garden. Many decorative art works grace the property. Be sure to visit! Daylilies, daylilies and more daylilies make this property an absolute delight! There are countless varieties, all unique and unusual. The homeowner hybridizes her own plants, starting them from seed and then waiting 2 to 3 years for blooms! Perennial hibiscus is another specialty, along with a large bed of zinnias started from seeds collected last fall. Although the daylilies take up most of the back beds, this gardener makes sure she has colour all season with foxglove, delphiniums, Siberian iris, rhododendron and double poppies. There is also a variegated maple, rose of Sharon, a beauty bush and a tri-coloured beech. Visit this garden for a riot of colour! PAGE WHITBY IN BLOOM GARDEN TOUR
