1 GPPA NEWSLETTER Tour 2007 Annual GPPA Tour of Gardens Saturday & Sunday, June 2 & 3 The annual GPPA tour of gardens is this weekend and we hope everyone is planning to attend. Our 2007 Chair, Anna Bradley, has done an outstanding job of lining up 12 diverse and interesting gardens for us to visit. Each one is different but all reflect the love and passion of their owners. You won t want to miss even one! 1. The Garden of Maureen Kalmanson Wrapping with grace around this 1913 Tudor home, the gardens are filled with perennials and blooming shrubs. Tender plants and fig trees winter in the two-story conservatory, and stone paths, imaginative sculpture, and several interconnected pools and waterfalls frame lovely garden pictures. The outdoor fireplace is original and typical of Druid Hills houses of this period. 2. The Garden of David Ellis This intimate Virginia-Highland garden features many moods. The front flower garden offers soft colors that evoke calmness. The driveway area offers limited space for gardening, so the gardener has made use of every inch, including the drive median. Color schemes along the driveway progress from hot colors as one enters the drive from the street to mostly green as you prepare for the back garden with its strong Asian influence. 3. The Garden of Laurie & Bill Schwartz This Ansley Park garden was designed to provide visitors with a journey. The gardener refers to it as an entire eco-structure with more than fifty varieties of Japanese maples, eight major waterfalls and four ponds. It is a spiritual garden as well, designed so that those in the garden can rest anywhere along the path and feel God s strength and grace. 4. The Garden of Elizabeth Holt This verdant retreat in the middle of Buckhead is a garden full of perennials, woodland ephemerals, boxwood parterres, and roses. There are many period garden ornaments and fountains as well as a summer house, which provides a breathtaking focal point to the entire back garden.

His vegetable bed is as beautiful as it is productive. A peaceful shade garden occupies the far end of the property in Atlanta s Paces neighborhood. 6.

His enthusiasm and gardening expertise are not limited by the space available. His jewel of a rose garden, for example, flanks a unique water feature. His vegetable bed is as beautiful as it is productive. A peaceful shade garden occupies the far end of the property in Atlanta s Paces neighborhood. 6. The Garden of Bill Hudgins This home in Atlanta s Mt. Paran neighborhood is surrounded by stone terraces and serves as a study in the use of container gardening. The multi-level garden features over 200 varieties of Japanese maples, many of them in pots. A hillside easement is utilized as a garden for many oversized potted plants, and a tranquil creek flows through a woodland garden filled with ferns and a great variety of perennials. 7. The Garden of Brencie & Richard Werner Perched on a rocky ridge overlooking the hills that form the banks of the Chattahoochee River, this Sandy Springs garden features plantings for sun and shade, for beauty and for utility. The entire two acres are maintained solely by the owners, and they ve planned their garden with an eye to conservation of resources and self-sufficiency. NOTE: The address for this garden is listed in some places incorrectly. The correct address is: 4640 Riverview Rd. It is on the same street as the Reilley-Zakem garden. 8. The Garden of Rosalyn Reilley & Jim Zakem This three-acre landscape in Sandy Springs is carved into vignettes encompassing formal courtyards, shady herbaceous beds, a sunken garden inspired by Butchart Gardens, a perennial border, an antique rose collection, poolside subtropicals, and a Japanese tea garden.

There are hillsides of color that include a garden house, labyrinth, gazebo, lily pond, multiple trails through the woodlands, and even a chapel, along with unusual vegetation. Throughout the gardens are many water features including fountains, ponds, streams and a waterfall. 10. The Garden of Anna & Verne Davis Despite downsizing to a Sandy Springs cluster home on only a quarter-acre, the Davises continue their love affair with roses. There are 171 rose plants mixed with clematis, snapdragons, ageratum, daisies, variegated leaf geraniums, begonias, and succulents. 11. The Garden of Lisa Bartlett Lisa says, I have five acres of plants on a quarter -acre lot in Chamblee. She loves plants and she particularly loves those unusual plants that are dwarf, variegated, or contorted. Ideas for container gardens abound including a bog garden in a bird bath filled with native pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, and orchids. 12. The Garden of Tim McDaniel Truly the project of a plantsman, this winding garden in northeast Atlanta demonstrates what can be created in a relatively small space with a moderate incline and many vantage points. The garden provides a great example of dealing with heavy water runoff, including a dry stream bed and a retaining wall that acts as a waterfall during downpours.

This is the first year that we will be checking tickets and you will need to present a ticket to be admitted to each garden.

4 Your tickets.. All members should have received their tickets, either at one of the last two GPPA meetings or by mail. If you have not received yours, please contact Karin Guzy (770) or Ginny Wolf (404) immediately to make arrangements to pick yours up. This is the first year that we will be checking tickets and you will need to present a ticket to be admitted to each garden. Volunteers Urgently Needed We are still looking for volunteers to staff the gardens. If you can help out, please contact John Ragland ( ) to arrange a time. Your help will be appreciated very much!!! Tour Maps This year s gardens are spread around the city and were very difficult to include on a small map. Because of this we only printed details on the tickets. A complete map (to scale) can be printed from our web site and is being sent as a separate file with this newsletter. Please print it and take it with you. Additional details, including specific directions, can be found at or other online map services.
