5 Managing a dairy farm is a demanding job. You set your own goals, manage the business activities, and do the hard work, or supervise and manage your staff. It can be difficult to separate management from daily tasks when you re doing both at the same time. The solution a professional management system from DeLaval. This will save you many hours of work each week, while giving you better control of your flock and each animal to improve productivity and profitability. DeLaval has a flock management system: ALPRO

6 DeLaval milking management system MMS-SG DeLaval has developed a milking management system to meet both your expectations as a progressive sheep or goat farmer, and the physiological needs of your animals. DeLaval milking management system MMS-SG saves you time and money, and looks after the best interests of the individual animals in your flock. It is a cost effective system that facilitates step-by-step investment. 6 Herd management

7 DeLaval milking management system MMS-SG is a modular system which can be extended gradually from a basic vacuum shut-off to the most sophisticated ID and milk metering system. As a starting point, DeLaval MMS-SG shuts off the milking vacuum when the animal is milked out, to avoid over-milking, reduce the mastitis risk and lower somatic cell counts (SCC). With ACR-cylinders added, half of the job detaching the cluster is done automatically, so milking is faster, and milking time is significantly reduced. As over-milking is no longer a problem, a milker can handle double the number of clusters that can be managed in a plant without take-off. Choose either a Time or Flow based system. Time based system An average per animal milking time is set according to the lactation status of the flock. Extra time can be added on an individual basis for each animal that needs longer milking. Flow based system Milk flow is monitored and when it decreases within the specified limit the take-off process starts. DeLaval MMS- SG is compatible with any of the following sensors: DeLaval flow sensor SG, DeLaval yield indicator FI5 and DeLaval milk meter MM25 SG. When DeLaval MMS-SG is installed in combination with DeLaval milk meter MM25 SG and DeLaval portal ID SG the system becomes an automated ID and milk recording system. The MMS system can also control the sort gate SG. Therefore, together with ALPRO Windows you can have the control and information you need for making well-informed flock management decisions. DeLaval traffic light SG This 3 lights device (Red, White and Green), installed on the milking parlour wall, helps the milker to improve flock management during milking. Based on colour and blinking codes, the traffic lights provide information to the milker about when a batch is ready to leave the parlour, ID errors and animal attentions. DeLaval control box CBI DeLaval CBI is the parlour interface where you can modify all milking parameters. The digital display shows valuable information during the milking and cleaning processes. Herd management 7

8 ALPRO flock management system This is the efficient tool which simplifies daily operation of your dairy farm, analyses what is happening now and provides essential information for long-term planning. ALPRO delivers information you will use to do the right things, every day. ALPRO TM collects accurate data automatically, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on every animal in your flock. It combines and analyses the data in the flock management program to produce clear information to support your decisions. ALPRO for Windows The software that processes all the information. The large working database holds comprehensive animal milking, feeding, breeding and health records, plus historical data on individual animals and the whole flock. Clear graphics provide easy to read reports, action lists, and graphs. You can customise reports to suit your needs. 8 Herd management

10 Milking From milking point control and monitoring milking performance, to checking that your milking protocols are adhered to, ALPRO TM delivers the information you need to fine-tune your milk production. Automated feeding Whatever your feeding strategy, ALPRO TM ensures each individual animal receives the appropriate type and amount of feed for her lactation stage and milk production. ALPRO TM helps you maximize milk yield and reduce feed costs, labour costs and waste. Breeding success Knowing when to inseminate each animal is the key to breeding performance. ALPRO TM combines a host of important animal data to pinpoint the optimal window for insemination. This simplifies your breeding programme. Accurate timing improves conception rates, reduces reproduction costs and improves total milk production and profitability. Flock health ALPRO TM is an efficient early warning system for flock health. It monitors and analyses all the key indicators to give you a clear picture of the health of every animal, and alert you to potential problems to enable early identification, diagnosis and treatment. Save time, gain efficiency You can do more with less labour and time with the automated efficiency of ALPRO TM connected systems. And you gain information you will use every day to manage your dairy business. ALPRO TM gathers, analyses and sorts information around the clock, so you always have access to the data you need. The new system controller with ALPRO processes information very quickly, boosting business efficiency. Because ALPRO TM is a modular system, if you wish you can start small and build it up gradually. Whatever the size of your farm, ALPRO TM will deliver benefits for you. It s easy to see all your animal records You will gain in productivity with ALPRO for Windows : saving money and earning more from being able to manage each animal and your whole flock more accurately and efficiently. With the big working database you can keep track of essential information for the whole flock with just a few clicks: milk records, feeding graphs, breeding activity, animal health (ailments, treatment, culling) and history. You will be able to monitor your animals and your crew. Labour saving automation You will benefit from the labour saving automation. You might not want to spend much time on your computer when you re too busy with hands on farming, but batch entry of data is very quick, for instance to sort a group of animals for a vet inspection; and you can certainly benefit from automated ALPRO TM systems which allow you to do more in much less work time. You can free up your time with automation. Improving management You may appreciate a mix of labour saving and improved management. Yes, you will free up some time, but you probably also want to plan, calculate, analyse the information identify deviations in animal performance, ways to improve in the barn, to reach the goals you ve set yourself. You can review daily actions at a glance, check individual animal or flock data analysed for a specific period or check if you are meeting your goals. 10 Herd management

20 DeLaval low line parlours Low line milking systems from DeLaval have traditionally been the most popular choice for sheep and goat farmers. Modern, compact parallel sheep and goat parlours from DeLaval are based on years of experience and are designed to make the milker s work both safe and ergonomically sound. The animals are milked from behind giving the operator easy access and a good view of the udder. The milking equipment is installed inside the pit where it is protected by the pit edge. Milk flows smoothly from the clusters and down the milk line, allowing low vacuum levels with reduced vacuum fluctuations. 20 Milking

21 MidiLine TM SG parlour is a cost-effective and easy-to-install milking system. One cluster located in the middle of the pit serves both sides of the parlour and because this shared cluster is seldom idle, you benefit from a cost-effective investment in milking technology. MidiLine TM SG can be installed easily in most existing buildings, enabling quick and easy updates of old parlours. Additionally, all components are placed high and dry where they are well protected from humidity and dirt. MidiLine TM SG available in three different versions: MidiLine TM SG100 MidiLine TM SG200 MidiLine TM SG300 Milking 21

22 MidiLine TM SG300 Swing over to efficient milking. MidiLine SG300 is the cost-efficient, automatic swing-over milking system from DeLaval. It features swing-over arms in the middle of the pit, so clusters can operate on both sides of the parlour. While animals are milked on one side of the parlour, on the other side animals enter or leave. This gives very high throughput as the cluster is seldom idle and swing-over happens automatically. The system is used with DeLaval MMS controller and can be installed in any type of stall but for best results combine it with DeLaval parallel stall SG. Then MidiLine SG300 can achieve the same throughput as rotary platforms but for less cost. 22 Milking

23 DeLaval milking points offer efficient milking functionality. These range from pulsators and clusters for simple operations, to fully automated parlour modules incorporating milk metering and take-off functions. DeLaval milking point controller MPC580 provides premium control of your milking operation. DeLaval MPC580 records and sends information directly to the ALPRO flock management system. You get real-time data on milk yields, animal numbers, milk flows, milking duration, stall position, etc. providing the management information you need to control your flock. All relevant attentions are indicated with various coloured LEDs to alert the operator immediately when action is required. Six digit display: Yield information is clearly displayed with six green digits for easy reading from anywhere in the parlour, and animal numbers alternate with yield during milking. Press the toggle button to display milk flow and milking duration. Easy access buttons: The most frequent milking operations have their own dedicated buttons. Pulsation control: Pulsation is controlled at each milking point. Pulsation stop reduces parlour noise as well as wear and tear. Control lamp: When the control lamp lights up it will catch your attention from wherever you are in the parlour. Colour coded LED displays: Indicators give the operator information for: do not milk, divert milk, separate animal, low yield and manual milking. DeLaval milking point controller MPC680 This is the premium parlour user interface with DeLaval ALPRO flock management system. It enables remote control of all other milking points, to maximize production with a consistent and well-informed milking routine. Milking 23

24 Clusters No single cluster can meet all today s dairy farming needs. That s why DeLaval offers a wide range of designs, flow capacities, materials, liner assortments, weights and handling characteristics to meet your specific needs. Worldwide, more than 50 sheep and goat breeds are milked. Among them you will naturally find different milking routines. DeLaval has a broad range of clusters to fit every case, from the rustic Merino sheep to the top-yielding Saanen goat. Almatic clusters have been successfully used by DeLaval customers for more than thirty years. The main feature is an automatic shut-off valve integrated in the teat cup. This makes the cluster very easy to use and avoids accidental air entrance during attachment or in case of kick-off. DeLaval cluster SG-TF100 has a unique and patented design. The round shape makes it both ergonomic for milking and easy to clean. The DeLaval Top Flow evacuation of the milk is gentle for the milk quality, reduces the risk for cross contamination between teats and secures that high milk yields can be taken care of. Furthermore, the claw is made of strong, transparent polysulphone plastic, so flowing milk can be easily observed. The reinforced flanged liners are connected directly to the claw, helping to promote teat health by avoiding flow restrictions that could cause vacuum fluctuations at the teat end. The integrated shut-off valve is operated by a pushand-pull button which makes the system easy to use and in need of less maintenance. With Alpro or MMS the shut-off is controlled automatically. Lightweight teat cups, soft liner lips and optimal materials (rubber or silicon) match perfectly the teat contour, giving the right stimulation, reducing slips and stripping operations. TF100 comes in two versions LowLine (LL) and MidiLine (ML), either with rubber or silicon liners. Many different types of liners can be used with DeLaval cluster SG-TF100, to fit the needs of your flock. 24 Milking

39 DeLaval quality milk filters have been developed to meet your highest expectations. Our milk filters main features include superior wet strength, maximum sediment retention and optimal flow rate. Milk must be protected to ensure it is delivered free from dirt and solid waste products. Dust, straw and insects may enter the milking system during milking, travelling through the cluster and pipelines to the receiver. DeLaval milk filters provide solutions for milk quality with excellent strength and filtration, and enable an extra visual and easily performed milk quality check. Food grade certified milk filters! 40 DeLaval milk filters Protect milk quality, maintain full cooling efficiency, with effective milk filtration. DeLaval milk filters enhance good milking practise Milk filtration should not be used to rectify unsatisfactory milking procedures. It is a complementary procedure to protect milking and cooling equipment and enhance milk quality and value. For your safety DeLaval milk filters are food-grade certified, which means they are safe to use in contact with food. DeLaval milk filters protect the efficiency of your cooling equipment By filtering milk before cooling, any sediment in the milk is trapped before it reaches the plate cooler. Sediment reaching the plate cooler will clog the plate and reduce the surface area available for heat exchange, reducing heat transfer efficiency. 40 Milking

41 Choosing your milk filter Traditional filters are white, but with our new blue filters it is easier to spot signs of mastitis or other potential contaminants. Choose what best fits your equipment from glued or sewn filter socks, sleeves or discs. Remember disposable milk filters are designed for single use. Colour Type Seam type Blue DeLaval milk filters Professional blue milk filters from DeLaval deliver efficient filtration while allowing you to enjoy easy-to-use milk quality checks. Clots or flecks in the milk are more easily seen on these light blue milk filters, providing you with an extra post-milking check against mastitis. DeLaval milk filters Our unique, high technology milk filters keep foreign particles out of your milk, protecting milk quality. All DeLaval milk filters are food grade certified, and combine the right wet strength for good flow rates with efficient sediment retention. Milk filter sock A milk filter sock is a folded sheet of milk filter fabric that is joined at the seam along its longitudinal edges and one pair of end edges, to form a tubular sock that is open at one end. Milk filter disc Flat sheets, or so called disc milk filters, are either round or rectangular sheets and are used mainly in bucket or pipeline milking equipment. Milk filter discs do not normally provide the high filtration capacity offered by sleeve or sock filters and are therefore rarely used in industrial scale milking. Glued and sewn Seams on the sock or sleeve filter are glued or sewn. It pays to replace in time Always replace DeLaval milk filters after every milking, or on a regular basis to ensure you maintain correct hygiene in your quality milk production. Milking 41

43 Milk filtration clean technology for quality milk production Milk is one of the most important and complete human foodstuffs; rich in proteins and numerous essential nutrients. Quality milk production depends on healthy animals consuming a nutritious food ration and plentiful fresh, clean water. Although commercially produced milk is processed, it remains entirely natural. And so is modern milk filtration. Today s professional on-farm milk filtration uses entirely clean technology, based solely upon molecular size it requires absolutely no additives. This clean technology will help you to produce milk of the highest quality and value, and to comply with the increasingly rigorous demands of both public authorities and consumers. As well as maximizing the quality and value of milk, the installation of a good filtration system protects both milking and cooling equipment from potentially harmful foreign particulates. This means that you benefit from filtration in two ways: you save money by maximizing the lifetime and minimizing the maintenance of your milking equipment; and make money by producing the highest quality milk so you can achieve the best market price. Although milk is subsequently filtered at the milk plant, effective milk filtration on the farm plays an important role in: producing raw milk of the highest quality for the dairy company indicating the effectiveness of teat cleaning prior to milking identifying udder health problems (e.g.mastitis) identifying animal environment problems ensuring optimum plate cooler efficiency and hygiene. 72 Open milk cooling tanks Lower the cost of your cooling operations, improve the quality of your milk and maximise your profits with the DXO family of cooling tanks. DXO cooling tanks Although fresh milk has a certain natural resistance to bacteria, it will deteriorate over time as bacteria starts to take hold in the milk. Cooling the milk to around 4 6 C within two to three hours after milking will essentially stop the process of bacterial growth and chemical changes, and allow more time for the product to be delivered to the customer in top condition. DeLaval s family of DXO cooling tanks have been designed to make sure you get the right conditions from the moment you opt for automated milk cooling. The tanks are easyto-install, well insulated, hygienic, easy to clean, silent and ergonomic. There are 11 tanks in total, ranging in size from 200 litres to 1850 litres. Each unit comes with the same features and standard fittings, which means that as the size of your herd grows, you can move up to a larger tank without any unnecessary installation or refurbishment costs. Unique benefits of the DXO cooling tank Fat preservation The DXO s unique fish tail agitator gently moves milk around the tank at a constant speed (21r/min). This ensures the fat cells remain suspended and do not float to the top, thus ensuring high quality milk. Rapid milk cooling Thanks to the scroll compressor, the high-density foam insulation and a double plated evaporator, milk can be cooled down quickly and efficiently to uphold the quality of milk. Hygienic and easy to clean Cleaning the DXO tank is easy thanks to the smooth stainless steal surfaces of the unit (roughness μm). Hygiene is further improved by the round shaped lid, which prevents water remaining on it and minimises the risk of water splashing onto the condensing unit. Silent, low energy condensing unit A piston or scroll compressor (depending on the size of the tank) provides both silent and energy efficient cooling. In fact, when scroll compressors are used in combination with high-density foam insulation, energy requirements are reduced by 10-15% compared to standard cooling tank solutions. Low installation costs The slim design of the tank and condensing unit (around 300 to 350 mm smaller in length than comparitive products) mean that you do not need a large milking chamber to house a unit. With standardised fittings on all sizes, the simple plug and play tank can be easily upgraded to a larger unit without incurring unnecessary installation costs. Ergonomic design A gas spring (available on tanks that house 800l or more) ensures easy and light access to the tank, while the robust double-rod handle provides safe and strong operation of the main lid. 72 Milk cooling & storage

73 Engineered to last All DeLaval DXO cooling tanks are engineered to ISO standards in stainless steel to ensure long and trouble-free cooling. To further protect the life of your DXO tank and ensure optimal cooling and hygiene at all times we recommend the use of DeLaval detergents and cleaning products. Furthermore, any service or maintenance should be carried out by your local DeLaval representative or an approved DeLaval service engineer. 75 Maintain milk quality Milk is refrigerated to maintain its quality for as long as possible, and to reduce the growth of bacteria. You can achieve more cost-efficiency in on-farm milk cooling if the milk is pre-cooled using well water through a heat exchanger before it enters the milk tank for cooling by refrigeration. Both these cooling stages must work efficiently to maintain maximum milk quality. Making sure you have the correct waterto-milk flow rate to pre-cool the milk before it enters the bulk tank will optimize pre-cooling efficiency. We recommend 1.5:1 or 1:1 water-tomilk flow rate. Different cooling methods Pre-cooler In the pre-cooler configuration, the plate cooler works as a contra-flow system with milk passing through the plates once. Your cost-saving investment Pre-cooling milk reduces the cooling load on your bulk tank and thus the amount of energy required. Associated costs are also reduced. A DeLaval plate cooler, the right size for your milk volume, can save you up to 60% of your refrigeration energy costs. Deep cooler In the deep cooler configuration, milk passes by the cooling plates twice, improving the efficiency of the cooling process. Designed for optimum efficiency To meet your farm s requirements for milk precooling, DeLaval plate coolers come in several sizes for medium milk flow rates. You can select an effective plate cooler to suit your farm from the pre-cooling series, the deep cooling series or a combi version. The deep plate cooler and the combi version require a supply of both tap water and ice water. Clip-on gaskets mean the heat exchangers are quick and easy to service, keeping maintenance costs to a minimum. The effective block and bleed gasket seal design ensures your milk does not mix with the cooling water. The coolers are framed in either aluminium or stainless steel. The stainless steel DeLaval plate cooler BMSS is a long lasting, non-rusting and easy-to-clean pre-cooling solution. E-combi In the e-combi version, milk is cooled to approximately +4 C in two stages. Stage 1 (pre-cooling) is carried out with tap water and stage 2 (final cooling) with chilled water. The e-combi version is intended for use in an instant cooling plant. Increase milk yield Research has shown that animals drink more water when it is offered at 17 C than when the water is colder, below 10 C. Providing water at the optimal temperature can increase milk yield. Water heated in the pre-cooling process is ideal for animals to drink. 77 Feeding is the largest milk production cost. Optimizing feed management is therefore a profitable investment one that can improve productivity and health, while reducing environmental impact. DeLaval provides systems and products that improve feeding efficiency and animal performance, regardless of feeding strategy or farm layout. 78 Food is the main cost in a dairy operation, so as well as affecting milk production, it naturally influences the profitability of your business. DeLaval supplies a range of solutions to help you improve feeding efficiency and animal performance. 78 Feeding

79 DeLaval goat feed station GFS Goats are inquisitive creatures. By designing DeLaval GFS around how goats behave, we have developed a feed station that is both animal- and profit-friendly. Kids follow their nannies everywhere, even into the feed station. DeLaval GFS features an entrance gate with air-pressure regulation to reduce the risk of kids getting hurt. Competition around the feeder can also lead to problems. However, with its gate-keeping function, DeLaval GFS eliminates dominationrelated difficulties. The station s unique form also prevents goats from hurting themselves. For example, it stops them from jumping on top of the station, and then falling down. In addition, special design features ensure that goats cannot get at (i.e. try to eat) and damage parts of the system. DeLaval GFS has been designed to encourage goats to increase their feed intake. This has been achieved by positioning the feed inlet below head level, which helps them relax and so eat more. Fine-tune feed-yield balance DeLaval GFS provides accurate control of feed/concentrates, distinguishing between low and high yielding animals. This will help decrease feed costs and increase milk yield, while stabilizing ph values in the rumen. This feed station is highly precise, dispensing at an accuracy of down to 20 grams. This means that if a particular goat should get 100 grams, it receives just that, and not 80 or 120 grams. Via an identification tag, DeLaval GFS recognizes individual needs, delivering the daily ration of each goat. Integrating with ALPRO herd management, DeLaval GFS decides how often a goat is allowed to eat, and how much. Since feed is geared to the on-going needs of each individual, less feed is wasted. DeLaval GFS also helps to stimulate milking because it allows you to adjust feeding to milking times: this stimulates let-down for faster milking and larger yields. With its double dispensers, DeLaval GFS makes it possible to distribute two different kinds of feed, or to dispense extra minerals when needed. DeLaval lamb & kid feeder LKF1200 With a feeder, you can save hours a day freeing you from the time-consuming task of hand-feeding. It also allows the animals to eat whenever they want. This reduces the risk of gorge feeding and bloating, resulting in better milk absorbtion and higher daily gains. This new model offers higher capacity, accurately preparing small amounts of milk that stay warm thanks to a heatable mixer. The feeder can rear up to 200 animals, depending on the number of teats used. Feeding 79

80 Our fully automated feed wagons help to increase profit by maximizing your flock s potential. These solutions can reduce labour requirements, improve milk production, lower feed costs and help to improve animal health. DeLaval feed wagon FW200 DeLaval FW200 handles group feeding from an overhead monorail-mounted wagon, distributing concentrate feed along the feeding table up to twenty times per day. Animals can be grouped according to their lactation status, and the amount and type of feed can be adjusted. Both step-by-step and string dispensing systems are available. Durability is offered via stainless steel construction of crucial parts. DeLaval feed wagon FW200 comes with a user-friendly control system which can handle up to four feeds and up to two extra mineral dispensers (optional). 80 Feeding

81 DeLaval vertical mixer VM makes short work of round bales. The complete bale goes into the mixer, and the powerful auger does the rest. DeLaval vertical mixer VM provides a good, fluffy feed mix within a short mixing time. The unique auger design, in combination with the counter knives, mixes and cuts even whole round bales and long straw. The central auger cuts, agitates and mixes the feed in the mixing container. All fibres are cut to an even length, and the mixed ration ingredients are thoroughly combined into a fluffy high quality mix: with concentrate, forages, and high structure roughage to maintain and improve animal health. The fluffy mix ensures that the animals eat all the components: concentrate and other ingredients are so well mixed together, the sheep or goat can t pick out just what she likes. The fluffy mix encourages high feed intake and increased milk yield. Weighing and programming of the mixed ration can be managed on a stand alone system, or connected to DeLaval Optimat management software OMS. This in turn can be connected to ALPRO flock management, for even better control of feeding, to reduce feed costs and increase farm profitability. Distribution is simple and precise, so each group of animals will get the right amount of good quality feed. The unique cross conveyor system means feed can be discharged evenly on either side of the mixer. DeLaval vertical mixers come in six sizes, from 5 m³ for small farms to the heavy duty 22 m³. All have mixing containers in high quality steel, and mixing gear designed for heavy duty operation, long life and low maintenance. The 12m³, 16m³, 19m³ and 22m³ mixers all have a two speed gearbox, to reduce the power needed from the tractor and ensure efficient mixing, distribution and emptying of the mixing wagon. There is a range of options to customize your mixer to your requirements. These include cutting knives in high quality chrome vanadium or heavy duty tungsten coating, belt conveyors for feed distribution, as well as an elevating conveyor to reach high feed tables. The control system can be mechanical or electro-hydraulic, and wagons can be fitted with pneumatic brakes. DeLaval horizontal mixer HM offers even, homogenous mixing with a threeauger horizontal mixing system and an efficient cutting device. DeLaval horizontal mixer HM has a three-auger horizontal mixing system to optimize cutting and mixing efficiency, for the best quality mix. Knife options include special round knives for long-fibred material such as long straw and hay. When many different feed types are used, complete mixing helps ensure the animal eats the right feed balance. With a DeLaval horizontal mixer it is easy to mix a balanced ration of feed-stuffs, delivering an even, homogeneous ration to maximise animal nutrition and milk production. DeLaval horizontal mixer HM has a durable chassis on which the mixer chamber is placed. The robust design provides strength and reliability for hard conditions and high usage. The mixer s hydraulic system is independent of the tractor. It is handled via the control levers inside the tractor cabin. Unloading is done via a belt conveyor, available in different lengths to fit different barn layouts. The programmable electronic weighing system provides exact weighing, programmable recipes, and an easy to read display. It makes it easy to program different recipes with different components for different groups of animals. The scales can be linked to DeLaval OMS. This in turn can be connected to ALPRO flock management, for even better control of feeding, to reduce feed costs and increase farm profitability. DeLaval HM can be equipped with different types of control devices, electronic weighing systems. It can also be equipped with the different types of brakes and transport lights needed when travelling on public roads. DeLaval horizontal mixer HM is available in 8 m 3, 12 m 3 and 17 m 3 sizes. A silage cutter can be fitted to DeLaval HM8 and HM12 to load silage efficiently without needing a second tractor or loader. The silage cutter leaves a smooth, straight cut-face in the silage bunker, helping to maintain feed quality and reduce silage wastage. It also cuts down on manual labour. Feeding 81

100 How to manage gates and how to choose your energizer 1. How to manage gates To keep your fence live when a gate is open, the fence must be connected through a cable run underground on both sides of the gate. With this construction the gate will not be electrified when it is open. 2. Choosing your energizer The first thing to decide is whether to have a battery or mains powered energizer. If possible, choose a mains powered energizer due to lower running costs. When choosing an energizer, take into considerations the height of the lowest wire above the ground and length of the fence. For sheep, a powerful energizer is needed because the lowest wire is usually about 30 cm above the ground. For horses, a lower powered energizer is sufficient because the bottom wire will be around 60 cm above ground. Choose the most powerful energizers for permanent electric fences. They are usually long, with a lot of vegetation. The more powerful the energizer, the greater the safety margin if for instance a branch touches the fence or animals not used to electric fences come into contact with it. Connection to energizer The easiest way to connect the fence wire is to use a wire joint that will give good contact between the conductors. Use a ground cable from the energizer to the fence. Earthing Good earthing is essential if you want the fencing to deliver the intended number of joules. Earthing rods should be inserted in damp ground and at some distance away from buildings, so that the rod is not in sandy infill by buildings walls. A minimum of three to four earthing rods must be used for most electric fences. For the most powerful mains operated energizers, use at least five. For small battery-powered energizers, on very short fences, one should be enough. Place the rods with at least 3 metre intervals, approximately 100 cm down. Try to find a place with damp ground. When there are poor earthing conditions, use an earth cable and do the earthing somewhere along the fence. How to check earthing a. Short-circuit the fence by leaning an iron pole/ rod against the fencing wire approx. 100 m from the energizer. b. Measure the voltage between earthing and ground with a volt meter. c. If the measured voltage is higher than 300 V (0.3 kv) the earthing is insufficient and needs to be improved with one or more additional earthing rods. Lightning protection Lightning strikes are one of the greatest threats to an electric fence. By installing at least one lightning protector on the fence, you reduce the risk of lightning damaging the energizer. 3. Problems with an ineffective fence Five ways to trouble-shoot fencing: 1. Check that the electric fence energizer gives the stated output voltage. Disconnect the fence and earth. Use a digital volt-meter to measure it directly across the output terminals. 2. Check all joints in the wire, particularly if polyester wire or tape, have been used. With polyester tape, tape joints must be used to obtain good joins. With polyester wire, the feeds must be twisted together after the wires have been fastened together. 3. Check the earthing: A. Short-circuit the fence by leaning an iron pole/rod against the fencing wire approx. 100 m from the energizer. B. Measure the voltage between earthing and ground with a volt meter. C. If the measured voltage is higher than 300 V (0.3 kv) the earthing is insufficient and needs to be improved with one or more additional earthing rods. 4. Check the insulators. If you hear an insulator ticking or you can measure a voltage drop at the insulator, you must change to a higher-rated insulator. 5. Check that there is not too much vegetation close to the wires and that there are no branches lying on the wire. This is particularly important with lower power energizers. Recommendations Below are the recommended wire heights and number of strands for different types of animals. 101 Installation tips Permanent fencing A permanent fence is to be preferred when enclosing pasture. Strong and robust, it will withstand the wear and tear of everyday usage. Temporary fencing Temporary fences are recommended when you want to divide an area into smaller pastures. This lets you optimise grazing by moving the complete system as the grass grows For permanent fences, impregnated wooden posts are recommended. For good stability, corner posts should be larger than the other posts. 2 At corners, use DeLaval tube insulator around the wire and post or end and connect the wire to a corner insulator. 3 Use a ring insulator on wooden posts. The insulator insert tool facilitates installation. EXTRA TIP: Use a reel to make it easier to install galvanized wire, ropes and tapes 4 A wire connector makes joints strong and reliable. 5 Use a wire strainer and handle to stretch the wire. 6 In most cases we recommend fibreglass posts. They are lightweight, easy to carry and durable. 7 Use wooden corner posts to make the system stable. 8 We recommend ending a wire/rope at a corner. Use a wire connector to create a strong joint to the next wire/rope. 9 It is recommended to use a ring insulator on wooden corner posts. 10 Wires and ropes should be made of durable polymer with conductors woven into the material. These are easy to use and their bright colours are clearly visible to animals. 11 When tying two ropes together there is a large risk of a poor electrical connection. Use wire connectors to ensure intended joule effect along entire length of fence. EXTRA TIP: For completely straight lines, stretch a wire between the corner posts to indicate where the other posts should go. Animal comfort 101

105 DeLaval ventilation systems Good ventilation is essential for keeping fresh air circulating in the buildings housing your animals whether lamb or kid shelters or barns for dairy animals. Your animals need fresh clean air to achieve their production potential. Unventilated or poorly ventilated structures with high levels of moisture, manure gases, pathogens and dust are detrimental to your animals, and your profits. Natural ventilation DeLaval curtains, ventilation panels and chimneys offer you flexible control of natural air movement to provide the well-ventilated conditions your animals need for year-round health and productivity. Choosing the right ventilation solutions will help you to create a good working environment, no matter what kind of barn you have. The curtains and ventilation panels all offer the option of manual or automatic control. Mechanical ventilation When you think of ventilation, you probably think of fans. But that is only one aspect of a good ventilation system. In mechanical ventilation concept, fans only serve as outlets for the ventilation system, and must be combined with adequately sized and distributed fresh air inlets in order to work properly. The warm, humid air in barns especially stanchion barns must be continuously exchanged with the drier, cooler outside air. An effective mechanical ventilation system comprises fans, air inlets and control boxes. Building environment 105

106 DeLaval circulating fans A cool and comfortable barn environment is important for both your animals and your staff. DeLaval supplies ventilation solutions that can operate standalone or that can be programmed to automatically control your barn environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 1 Barn ventilation High moisture levels, manure gases, dust concentrations and other pathogens in unventilated or poorly ventilated structures create a negative environment for animals. Stale air can also adversely affect milk production and milk quality. Fans are the ideal way to deliver the necessary air exchange for the optimal climate. They should be selected to provide the appropriate ventilation for each season and for the number of animals in your barn. Placing fans in strategic locations throughout a dairy facility is the first step in providing supplemental cooling for the animals, assuming that adequate natural ventilation already exists and plenty of fresh water is always available. 1. 108 In any dairy building whether it is a shelter for newborn lambs, kids or a barn for lactating animals sidewalls provide air inlets or outlets, depending on wind direction. For good ventilation, the sidewalls must be sufficiently open to enable a thorough exchange of air: wide open in summer, half open in late autumn and early spring, and partly open in winter. Open wall panel Covered wall Open eave Open front Open eave, adjustable closure Open front Equipping a barn with adjustable ventilation curtains and panels is a key part of a natural ventilation strategy. However, by adding DeLaval chimney C1 you can dramatically improve the ventilation of your barn. DeLaval curtains, ventilation panels and chimneys provide you with flexible control of natural air movement. You can maintain the well-ventilated conditions your animals need for good health and productivity throughout the changing seasons and provide a good working environment, no matter what kind of barn you have. Dairy animals need a clean, cool and dry environment with plenty of fresh air. Proper ventilation, with the continual removal of heat, moisture and odours created by livestock, is the key to keeping your animals comfortable. They also require lower temperatures than human beings. When temperatures exceed about 22 C, animals begin to display signs of heat stress. Milk production can be negatively affected even at temperatures lower than 22 C if the animal is exposed to heat for a long period of time. Milk yield can decrease by about ten percent at 20ºC. The previous 24 hours of accumulated temperature and humidity levels determine the animal s milk production. For this reason, researchers have created a monitoring tool called the Temperature and Humidity Index for the previous 24 hours (THI24h). Animals are comfortable as long as this index stays below 68. This is where natural ventilation can help. It uses natural air movement to help ensure adequate air exchange. Temperature control is maintained by the manual or automatic opening of curtains, doors or ventilation panels, depending on both indoor and outdoor conditions. These ventilation openings should be well located to take advantage of thermal buoyancy and wind. Barns designed with good natural ventilation can provide an excellent environment for dairy animals. This is why DeLaval offers assistance in planning and designing complete dairy farms as part of our full range of dairy farm solutions. When you work with DeLaval in planning your dairy farm buildings, you can be confident that your design will have the right solutions for your climate and way you produce milk. 110 DeLaval illumination Maintaining and increasing your flock s milk production by introducing higher light levels in your barn can help profitability through the darker autumn and winter months. If you can deliver more milk when there is normally a seasonal shortage, you will reap the benefit from the higher milk prices paid during these low seasons. Of course, to get the full benefit from increasing light levels, all aspects of animal comfort have to be maintained at optimum levels too. DeLaval farm lights FL250F and FL400F offer the opportunity to control your barn lighting at this optimum level. Farm lights can be controlled automatically, by presetting a timer, or via a light sensor. 110 Building environment

111 DeLaval farm light FL250F and FL400F You might think the amount of light in your barn doesn t matter much. Think again. You can improve animal comfort, flock health and productivity by flicking a light switch DeLaval farm light FL250F This farm light enables you to control barn lighting at the optimum level for lactating animals: 16 hours daylight of 180 lux brightness / eight hours of darkness. You can position fixtures at different angles, to focus light where it is needed. Maintenance is easy, with durable water and dust-proof housing which opens easily (without tools) when required. The lights comply with all relevant safety standards. Improved work environment Your workers appreciate more light too. Better lighting improves the work environment and it is easier for staff to notice problems like injuries, lame animals, or clots and to take corrective action. Your choice DeLaval farm lights have a control box with a timer you can preset to control the lights automatically. They can also be controlled via a light-sensor. A new option is the computer-linked DeLaval barn system controller BSC. This can control many aspects of the barn environment, including switching the lights on and off according to timer based settings. How many lights do you need? 112 Fly control Flies are a major concern for the dairy farmer. They can cause a significant fall in milk yield, spreading a number of different diseases. In addition, modern methods of dairy farming often provide an ideal breeding environment for flies. 112 Building environment

113 DeLaval fly control Flies are a very real concern for dairy farmers. They cause serious problems as carriers of contagious diseases and parasites. This leads to stressed and sick animals. The result? Reduced yield, high treatment costs and significant financial strain. Now, with Aptaor A and Aptaor L, you can set up your own no-fly zone Biosecurity A disease outbreak in any dairy flock could be financially devastating, causing anything from lower milk production to reduced milk quality, from impaired reproduction to reduced lamb/kid survival, from debilitating infection to death. A programme designed to prevent disease consists of more than just vaccinations. Biosecurity refers to management practices that reduce the chance that infectious diseases will be transmitted to farms by animals or people, but also by reducing the spread of infectious disease on a farm. A thorough biosecurity programme is required to maximize disease resistance and minimize herd exposure to infectious agents. One pillar of such a programme is insect and rodent control; another is isolation, sanitation and movement restrictions. Break the fly cycle The best approach to controlling flies is with an integrated two-pronged attack: preventing larvae maturing into flies, and controlling existing adult fly numbers. As larvae represent 80% of the total fly population, it is almost impossible to control them with adulticides only. The efficiency of insecticides is best realized when correct manure management minimizes fly breeding. Relying on insecticides alone is seldom satisfactory no insecticide on the market makes up for poor sanitation. Fewer flies more milk Calmer animals, not infested with flies, eat and drink more, producing more milk. Reducing the fly population reduces disease transmission for healthier, more productive animals. 1. Aptaor PRO Adulticide kills adult flies Control adult flies in and around animal housing and farm buildings by applying Aptaor PRO adulticides. This formulation can be sprayed on all barn surfaces and especially in place where adult flies like to rest on. Aptaor PRO Adulticide is ideal for use as part of an integrated fly control program in combination with a larvicide such as Aptaor MET larvicide. 2. Aptaor PYR spray Aptaor PYR spray is effective in eliminating flies and other flying insects from the house, barn and other places of the dairy farm. Pyrethrin, the active used in Aptaor PYR spray has been used effectively to control insects for decades and is non-persistent, decomposing rapidly in the environment. This rapid degradation of pyrethrum has resulted in little known cases of insect resistance making it an excellent choice for the control of insects in a wide variety of settings. 3. Aptaor MET Larvicide stops fly larvae This granular larvicide should be spread dry. Aptaor MET Larvicide contains S-methoprene, most of the active is encapsulated, allowing both immediate action and gradual release over 8 weeks. Larvae that will absorb or be in contact with the active will develop into pupae but will never develop into adult flies. Aptaor MET Larvicide prevents larvae from becoming flies and damaging your profits. Building environment 113

We have a world wide network of more than 3,000 professional service technicians using specialized equipment and company standard protocols to service DeLaval installations; and DeLaval machine tests are based on international and national standards. Our unique testing tool DeLaval VPR100 is used to accurately evaluate, calibrate and set up your milking machine. Dedicated service Your program will depend on the size of your flock, the number of milking points, the milking time and cleaning time we can also service your cooling, feeding and manure equipment. Regular testing and maintenance will help to ensure peak system performance, extend its lifetime, and minimize equipment down time. When you sign a service agreement for preventive maintenance, a certified DeLaval service technician will complete a regular thorough equipment evaluation and performance check, to make sure your system is running at optimal performance. Any replacement parts will be DeLaval original parts and liners, to ensure the continued reliability of your equipment. DeLaval emergency service We manage our own DeLaval dairy farm, so we know that around the clock support is a must. With our global distribution network we are close to our customers, and we offer 24/7 emergency support 365 days a year. We re only a phone call away. Advisory service We provide training for you and your employees at system start-up, schedule follow-up visits for system evaluation, and offer ongoing advisory services for more efficient farm management. You can be sure DeLaval cares about your satisfaction and success. 130 InService

131 Service protocols DeLaval service technicians use proven, standard protocols to perform service on your equipment. This ensures that the service is done properly, and well documented for future reference. InService 131
