Excellent dried. - semi F - PS 2 ft July - Sept white Andropogon gerardii Big Bluestem The tallest and greatest of the tallgrass prairie grasses. It can reach over 6 ft and makes a statement as an accent in the garden. Beautiful fall colour too. F - PS 7 ft Aug - Oct Aquilegia canadensis Columbine, wild Very showy, red and yellow flowers provide nectar in the spring for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Will tolerate a large range of sun & soil types including under acidic evergreens. - moist F - S 2 ft Apr - Jun red to yellow

3 Asclepias incarnata Milkweed, swamp Large, deep pink flowers clustered at the top of a tall, branching stem, bearing numerous narrow, lanceolate leaves. Benefit to bees. Larval Host: Monarch, Swallowtail & Queen butterflies. moist - wet F - PS 2-4 ft Jun - Aug deep pink Asclepias syriaca Milkweed, Common Very fragrant. Visited by hummingbirds, aphids and a wide variety of bees and butterflies including Monarchs. Rhizomatous, not suitable for home landscape projects. semi wet - F 3 ft Jun - Aug pink Asclepias tuberosa Milkweed, Butterfly Beautiful, distinctive redish, orange to yellow cluster flowers that are of benefit to a variety of butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Prefers drier, well drained soil and a sunny location. - moist F - PS in Jun - Aug Orange Baptisia australis Blue False Indigo This beautiful, blue, spring blooming native develops in the first few years before reaching its height and bloom potential. Tall and wide, leave room to grow for home landscape projects. semi wet - moist F 4 ft May - July blue Bouteloua curtipendula Side-oats Grama A rarity among native grasses in that it has tiny, attractive, red flowers during its summer bloom. When the seed heads, they have an oat-like appearance. It is cited as a food source or larval host for at least five types of skipper moths. semi moist - F - PS 2 ft Aug - Sept grass Calamintha arkansana Savory, Wild Amazing aroma - excellent for rock gardens and limestone screened pathways since it prefers alkaline soils semi - moist F 8 in May - Oct pink Campanula rotundifolia Harebell Delicate blue, bell-shaped flowers on slender stems. Great summer bloomer - semi moist F - PS 12 in June - Sept Blue

4 Carex aurea Gold Fruited Sedge/Golden Sedge Carex aurea is very useful for erosion control, attractive around ponds and water features. This fine textured sedge will form dense colonies of light green foliage, with conspicuous yelloworange seedheads. wet - semi moist F - PS in June - Aug Yellow Carex bebbii Sedge, Bebb's Larger tufted flowers make the Bebb's Sedge an attractive pond or rain garden addition. Leaves are soft, flat and wide. Forms attractive clumps. semi wet - moist F 3 ft June - July SEDGE Carex eburnea Black Fruited Sedge/ Bristleleaved Sedge Grow in the landscape for its foliage effect. Soft, thread-like, green leaves form a spherical, porcupine-like clump to 12 tall and as wide. Whitish-green flowers on spikes in spring. semi moist - F - S up to 1 ft April green Carex hystericina Sedge, Porcupine The unique seed heads resemble a spiky bottlebrush or porcupine-like bristles. Each fertile culm terminates in an inflorescence consisting of a single staminate spikelet at the apex and 2-3 pistillate spikelets below. Temporary flooding is wet - semi wet F 3 ft SEDGE Carex muskingumensis Sedge, Palm A widely-used Sedge for home landscaping for its attractive palm formation, clumping behavior and ability to tolerate full sun or full shade. Very adaptable F - S 3 ft May - July SEDGE Carex pseudocyperus Sedge, Cyperus- Like Elongated clusters of 3-6 nodding, long-stalked spikes. One shorted spike with 2-5 cylindrical, longer spikes. Form attractive clumps. Temporary flooding is tolerated. wet - semi wet F 2 ft Jun - Aug SEDGE Carex vulpinoidea Sedge, Brown Fox Tussocks with fine-textured bristly fruiting heads like a fox s tail. Good colonizer of disturbed, open, moist ground. Very adaptable. wet - semi F - PS 3 ft June - July SEDGE

5 Chelone glabra Turtlehead Named for it's bold, turtle head shaped, white, blossoms forming a spike. Important host plant for the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly. Another beautiful butterfly garden or pond project plant. moist - wet F - PS 4 ft July - Oct White Clematis virginiana Virgin's Bower (Native Clematis) Pretty, tiny white cluster flowered clematis. Blooms later than the regular garden culture moist -semi varieties continuing a vertical in the garden. One of moist my favourites. PS up to 9 ft July - Sept white Coreopsis lanceolata Coreopsis, Lancedleaf Bright, yellow, daisy-like flowers with ruffle-edged petals. Impressive in mass plantings. Prolific bloomer for cut flowers. - semi F 2 ft May - Aug Yellow Danthonia spicata Poverty Oat Grass Grows actively when soil temperatures are cool - semi F - PS 2 ft July - Sept white Echinacea pallida Coneflower, Pale Purple Tall pale purple to pale pink flower heads. Slender petals with large centres pointing upward. Earlier blooming than other coneflowers. Benefit to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. - semi F - PS 3 ft June - July Pink Echinacea purpurea Coneflower, Purple Large pink to purple coneflowers reach for the sun all summer. Large clumps, very showy. Drought and deer resistant. - moist F - PS 3-4 ft July - Sept Purple Elymus canadensis Canada Wild Rye Actively grows spring and fall when temperatures are cooler. Identifiable by the wheat-like" nodding seedhead. Adds striking texture to the garden. semi moist - moist F - PS 1 ft May - July White

6 Elymus hystrix Bottlebrush Grass Woodland species with bottlebrush shaped, spiked plumes in fall. Prefers to moderately moist soil. - moist PS - S 2 ft Apr - Jun Epilobium angustifolium Fireweed Large pink spikes start to bloom from the bottom up. Good for larger moist areas, speads easily. moist - semi F - PS 3-4 ft June - Aug Pink Eragrostis spectabilis Purple Love Grass Warm season grass. Seedheads bloom midsummer in shades of light to bright purple, giving an overall purple haze to the landscape - stunning! F - PS 1-2 ft Jun - Aug purple Eupatorium maculatum Spotted Joe Pye Weed A very tall plant that branches out with clusters of tiny pink flowers. Numerous species of butterflies and bees are attracted to it! wet - moist F - PS 5 ft June - Sept Pink Eupatorium perfoliatum Boneset Similar in shape to Joe Pye Weed, but a shorter plant that branches out with clusters of tiny white flowers and attractive clasped, narrow leaves along the stem. wet - moist F - PS 3-4 ft July - Sept white Geum triflorum Prairie Smoke Adaptable rock garden favourite. Pink - red, smokey plummes at seed set make Prairie Smoke very distinctive. moist - F - PS 8 inches Apr - Jun Pink - Red Helenium autumnale Sneezeweed Large and numerous daisy like flowers bloom in the late summer and fall when a lot of garden colour is finished. A good pollinator and butterfly plant. Divide often for full plants wet - moist F - PS 3-4 ft Aug - Oct Yellow

7 Helianthus giganteus Sunflower, Tall or Giant Reaching heights of 10 ft or more, this sunflower has multitudes of clustered, yellow ray flowers. Rhizomatous and may not be suitable for small landscape projects. semi wet - moist F - PS 8-10 ft July - Sept yellow Heliopsis helianthoides Sunflower, Sweet Ox-Eye, Early Good for large restoration or prairie field projects. Long flowering sunflower, adaptable to diverse soil conditions. moist - semi F - PS 5 ft June - Sept Yellow Hierochloe odorata Sweet Grass Many North American indigenous cultures burned Sweet Grass in ceremonies to invite the presence of good spirits. It has a natural sweet aroma. Its natural habitat is wetlands, prairies, and savannas in wet and medium moisture soils. wet - moist F - PS 2 ft Aug - Sept grass Iris versicolor Northern Blue Flag Iris Beautiful pond restoration plant and adaptable to garden culture. Blue to purple flowers with sword like foliage. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Very showy. wet - moist F - PS 3 ft May - July Blue Liatris cylindracea Cylindric Blazing Star Shorter, branching type blazing star. Purple tuffed flower heads. Very garden friendly blooming later summer into fall. semi - F - PS 12 inches July - Oct Purple Liatris spicata Dense Blazing Star Slender spike of purple reaching heights of 5 feet blooming from top downward. Feathery appearance. Very showy, particularly in groups. wet - semi moist F - PS 5 ft July - Oct Purple Lobelia cardinalis Cardinal Flower Beautiful scarlet red flowers on flowering spikes. Striking in appearance and an important nectar source for hummingbirds and butterflies. wet - moist F - PS 4-5 ft July - Sept Red

8 Lobelia siphilitica Great Blue Lobelia Can form colonies of shorter blue spiked plants. Plant in front of larger flowers in the garden for a later summer display. Easily controlled, good for part shade rock gardens and regular garden culture. wet - semi PS - S 2 ft July - Oct Blue Lupinus perennis Lupine, Wild Profuse spiked bloomer. Essential to the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly native to the Great Lakes region. semi - F - PS 1-2 ft May - July Purple Monarda fistulosa Bergamot, Wild Lovely violet blossom, and minty scent. Historically, used as a herb with medicinal properties. Adaptable to garden culture. Favourite with pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. moist - F - PS 3-4 ft July - Sept Violet Packera paupercula Balsam Ragwort Dainty clusters of small yellow composite flowers. Grows in nice clumps, perfect for sunny rock gardens. moist - semi F - PS 6-18 inches May - Aug Yellow Penstemon digitalis Foxglove Beardtongue Popular and pretty. Tubular white to pinkish flowers along the stems. Great pollinator and hummingbird variety. moist - semi F - PS 2-3 ft June - July White Penstemon hirsutus Hairy Beardtongue Shorter than Foxglove Beardtongue (penstemon digitalis) with purple/whitish tubular flowers along the stem. Perfect for the, sunny garden. moist - F - PS 16 inches May - June Purple Physostegia virginiana Obedient Plant Terminal spikes of pink to lavender, tubular flowers. Snapdragon-like, stays in a position for awhile, making it "obedient". Rhizomatous, not suitable for small landscape projects. wet - moist F - PS 3-4 ft Aug - Sept Pink

9 Polemonium reptans Jacob's Ladder Delicate, spring blooming plant covered in small, blue to pink flowers. Great for shade to partial shade garden borders. moist - semi S - PS 1 ft Apr - June Blue Pycnanthemum virginianum Virginia Mountain Mint Attracts many pollinators to its flowers. Very fragrant. Blooms constantly throughout the summer, covered with clusters of tiny white flowers. wet - semi F - PS 2-3 ft June - Sept White Ratibida pinnata Coneflower, Greyheaded Showy, yellow coneflower which is very drought resistant. This summer bloomer makes a nice companion to Wild Bergamot in the garden. A butterfly and bee favourite. semi - F - PS 4-5 ft July - Sept Yellow Rudbeckia hirta Black-eyed Susan Actually a biennial, this common, but favourite garden native flower will reseed itself easily. semi moist - F - PS 1-2 ft June - Oct Yellow Rudbeckia laciniata Coneflower, Greenheaded Tall and spectacular when in bloom covered in yellow coneflowers from almost top to bottom. A great pollinator plant. semi moist - semi F - PS 7-9 ft July - Sept Yellow Schizachyrium scoparium Little Bluestem Very ornamental bunchgrass with fine textured foliage that forms dense mounds. Radiant mahogany-red with white seed tufts in the fall. Dry - Semi moist F - PS 3 ft July - Oct Sisyrinchium albidum Blue-eyed grass, Common Very small grass-like plant, with cute little blue flowers. Nice shade area, woodland type or sunny rock garden favourite. Very adaptable. moist - F - S 6 inches May - July Blue

10 Solidago flexicaulis Goldenrod, Zig Zag With a zig zag stem and wide, toothed leaves, this attractive and only woodland goldrod colonizes easily. Nice groupings for naturalizing a large area. Fairly aggressive. wet - semi PS - S 3 ft Aug - Oct Yellow Solidago ptarmicoides Goldenrod, Upland White Pretty, aster-like bunches of white flowers on a low-growing plant that blooms all summer. Very garden friendly and drought tolerant. semi - F 1 ft June - Sept White Solidago rigida Goldenrod, Stiff This goldenrod is very attractive and has larger, and flatter clusters of yellow flowers than other goldenrods. Excellent in cut flower arrangements as a filler too. semi wet - F - PS 4 ft Aug - Oct yellow Sorghastrum nutans Indian Grass Tall, bunching mounds with broad, blue-green blades and a large, plume-like, golden -brown seedhead in the fall. Showy fall colours of deep orange to purple. - semi- 4-6 ft Aug - Sept cordifolius Aster, Heart-leaved Blue-violet flowers, heart-shaped leaves and is drought tolerant. Blooming late summer to fall, like most Asters, but prefers partial to full shade. It attracts butterflies, bees,and other beneficial insects. Nice for cut flowers. semi - PS - S 3 ft Sept - Oct blue ericoides Heath Aster This Aster becomes almost shrub-like, full of tiny, white ray flowers late summer into fall. Can be aggressive spreading 1ft or more per year. Good for a corner that needs a filler. semi - F - PS 2-3ft Aug - Oct White laeve Aster, Smooth Blue-violet flowers, easy to grow and is drought tolerant. Blooming late summer to fall, like most Asters, it attracts butterflies and other beneficial insects such as small bees, flies, small to mediumsized butterflies, skippers, and wasps. semi - F 2-4 ft July - Oct Blue

Very drought and wet - semi F - PS 4 ft Aug - Oct Purple deer tolerant. oolentangienses Aster, Sky Blue An abundance of blue to blue-violet flowers that attract beneficial pollinators - bees, wasps, butterflies & skippers as well as song birds - moist F - PS 3 ft Aug - Sept Blue puniceum Aster, Purple- Stemmed Pretty clusters of lavender coloured, ray flowers on a 3 ft plant. Suitable for sunny pond and river edge gardens. wet - semi moist F 3-4 ft July - Oct Pale Purple/Bl ue umbellatus Aster, Flat-topped Summer bloomer unlike other asters. White "raytype flowers in flat clusters. Larval host for the Harris' Checkerspot Butterfly. Needs room to spread - Great pond naturalization plant. moist - wet F - PS 2-5 ft July - Sept White Tradescantia ohiensis Spiderwort, Ohio Its unusual spiked, and folded over foliage as well as it's cluster of large blue flowers make this an attractive addition to any garden. semi wet - F - PS 3 ft May - July blue Verbena hastata Blue Vervain It has numerous finger-length, cluster spikes of small, blue - purple blooms making it a beautiful backdrop plant in the garden. Very garden adaptable even though it prefers wetter soils. wet - semi F - PS 4-5 ft July - Sept seed PM

12 Verbena stricta Hoary Vervain Shorter vervain that prefers soil. Larval host for the Common Buckeye Butterfly. Does not compete well with other aggressive vegetation semi - F - PS 2 ft June - Sept Blue/Pur ple Vernonia missurica Ironweed, Missouri Ironweed has unusually brilliant purple flowers on top of 5' tall stems, working well as a tall backdrop, blooming between July and October. Provides nectar for foraging bees. F 5 ft July - Oct purple Veronicastrum virginicum Culver's Root Can add a strong upright accent to any sunny or part shade garden. Similar in structure to Blue Vervain, Culver's Root has longer clusters of densely packed, white flowered, spikes. F - PS 4-5 ft June - Aug White Viola sororia Violet, Common A violet that will do well in many landscapes would be the Common Blue Violet. It blooms in early spring through early summer. And the attractive heart-leaved foliage stays green all summer. F - S 4 inches April - Sept purple Zizia aurea Golden Alexanders Blooming in late spring - early summer when other plants are not yet in bloom. Yellow umbel cluster flowers. Very adaptable to garden culture. F - PS 2-3ft May - June Yellow

Found in water most of the time. Great pond shrub. semi moist - semi F - PS 8 ft June - Aug White 5 Hibiscus moscheutos Marsh Hibiscus/Swamp Rose Mallow Large pink flowers as large as your outstretched hand. Gorgeous and very adaptable to traditional garden culture wet - semi F 3-5 ft July - Sept pink 6 Physocarpus opulifolius Ninebark June flowering shrub can reach heights and widths of 8-10 ft. Can be used for a privacy hedge, or cut back if a smaller size is desired. The bark of older branches peel in several shades of brown giving the name "Ninebark". Excellent for nesting birds. semi wet - semi F - PS 8 ft June white 7 Rosa palustris Swamp Rose A beautiful pond addition, however, Swamp Rose is rhizomatous; it spreads aggressively and therefore may not be suitable for small landscape plantings. wet - semi moist F - PS 5 ft June - Aug pink
