I know we all have special events that we are following. My favorite is the ice skating events. It was so exciting to see Chloe Kim, a young snowboarder, win Gold in the Halfpipe.

Some of our plants are blooming already and the other day I saw blossoms on trees down town. Our speaker for the month of March will be Julia Daehling-Oldfield the owner of Big Oak Nursery.

She will give a power point presentation regarding the in s and out s of owing and running a Commercial Nursery. I know she will have lots of information regarding: How to Grow Plants.

At the March meeting of GOTG we will give you information regarding our March trip to Mickie Grove Park. We will visit the Tea Garden and see the cherry trees in bloom.

1 Gardeners of the Grove Volume 10, Issue 3, March 2018 A Message from our Vice President ~~~~~~~~ Well, it has been a lot of fun watching the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang lately. I know we all have special events that we are following. My favorite is the ice skating events. It was so exciting to see Chloe Kim, a young snowboarder, win Gold in the Halfpipe. Speaking of winter, last year when I wrote my article for the Scarecrow, I talked about all the rain we were getting. This winter - not so much, but we still can be hopeful for the month of March. Some of our plants are blooming already and the other day I saw blossoms on trees down town. Our speaker for the month of March will be Julia Daehling-Oldfield the owner of Big Oak Nursery. Her mom is June Daehling a member of GOTG. We are calling Julia's presentation: A Day in the Life of a Nursery. She will give a power point presentation regarding the in s and out s of owing and running a Commercial Nursery. I know she will have lots of information regarding: How to Grow Plants. Julia also told me that she would be glad to give us a tour of Big Oak Nursery some day. The Tour Committee has been hard at work setting up several tours for our club. At the March meeting of GOTG we will give you information regarding our March trip to Mickie Grove Park. We will visit the Tea Garden and see the cherry trees in bloom. Everyone is welcome to come to our GOTG meeting at 6:00 pm on Monday, March 5th so we can get our socializing (catching up) in before the 6:30 pm meeting. I also wanted to remind everyone that Jan Fetler welcomes anyone who wants to contribute a story or article to be included in the Scarecrow. As usual when spring approaches, the garden calendar fills up with wonderful events. DON T MISS the calendar beginning on page 5, especially this list of tours we plan to take. Less Toxic Insecticides ~~~~~~ Excerpt from: By Jan Fetler Spring is almost here and we can already hear those aphids and other insects preparing for attack. Here are some tips from UC Integrated Pest Management to help you protect our environment while protecting your plants. Insecticides can be an important part of gardening; however, some products can worsen pest problems or harm people or wildlife. Other products often called less toxic pesticides cause few injuries to people and organisms other than the target pest. The less toxic insecticides listed below should be your first choice when deciding to use pesticides to control insects. Always check product labels to be sure the pesticide is registered for your plant and pest situation. Soaps: Insecticidal soaps control aphids, whiteflies, and mites. To be effective, complete coverage of pests is needed and sometimes a repeat application is also required. Insecticidal oils: Oils control aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale insects, spider mites, psyllids, and thrips. Good coverage of pests Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) subspecies kurstaki (Btk) controls leaf-feeding caterpillars like Tomato Hornworms. Bt subspecies israelensis (Bti) controls mosquitoes and fungus gnats. Codling moth granulosis virus (sold as Cyd-X) controls codling moth those worms in apples and pears. Spinosad controls caterpillars, leafminers, and thrips, but it can also harm some beneficial insects. Botanical insecticides: Derived directly from plant materials, botanicals vary greatly in their chemical composition and toxicity, but usually break down in the environment rapidly. Pyrethrins (pyrethrum) are used against a range of insects but are toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. Azadirachtin (from the neem tree but different from neem oil) has limited effectiveness but low toxicity to nontargets. Garlic, hot pepper, peppermint oil, and clove oil are sold as insect repellents to protect plants. Limited information is available about their effectiveness. Avoid these more toxic pesticides: Pyrethroids such as permethrin, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, and bifenthrin can move into waterways and kill aquatic organisms. Organophosphates such as malathion, disulfoton, and acephate are highly toxic to natural enemies. Carbaryl harms bees, natural enemies, and earthworms. The Scarecrow March

Photoshop can change the appearance of plants as it does for people! If this interests you and you are up a challenge, try Photoshop Elements software, under $100 for Windows or Mac. You ll also want to get the book Photoshop Elements for Dummies to help with the learning curve! Here are a few pictures changed dramatically with photo editing. Color removed from chard leaf leaving the vein. Another filter colors the sunflower outline. Fuchsias are reduced to an outline with a filter. Inverting the color turns coleus from red to green. Leaving plants in your garden has several benefits. You get volunteer plants. Flowers attract beneficial and pollinating insects. Flowers are edible, yes, they taste like arugula! Consider investing in a smart controller that adjusts watering based on the weather. Water ornamental trees and shrubs if rainfall is below normal. Start leek seeds indoors.

Fertilize blueberries, young fruit trees and green-inwinter lawns. Use a slow release fertilizer. Test soil acidity (ph) for blueberries, add sulfur if needed.

Spray grapes for powdery mildew as shoots begin to grow and daytime high temperatures are 73 F or over (see Garden Guide). Continue weekly until daytime temperatures are over 95oF.

Consider testing vegetable garden soil once every 3 to 5 years for ph and nutrients. Divide and/or transplant summer or fall blooming perennials such as daylilies and asters.
