Healthy orchard practices bring about wholesome fruit, which is good for you and good for the planet. 3 Trimming Fruit Trees Improves Yield and Quality Fruit trees should be trimmed twice each year. The main trimming should be done in the very early spring to make corrections to the structure of the tree. A stubby, open tree will support fruit weight, allow for full fruit development, and will be easier to harvest. The tree should also be trimmed in mid - summer to remove most of the water shoots, and to allow more sun for the maturing fruit.

4 Common Fruit Tree Concerns Fruit trees are susceptible to a number of different problems, but the most common include: Codling Moth: This moth lays an egg on the outside of the fruit. When the egg hatches the larvae tunnels into the center of the apple and lives there as it grows. These are the most common apple worms. Scab Fungus: A disease that ruins the outside of the fruit and, if left untreated, can seriously damage the tree. Alpine uses organic fungicides like copper and sulfur to limit the damage done. Fire Blight: This bacterial disease can cause extensive die back in apples and pears, and infected branches should be trimmed out. We use traditional organic treatments to limit the spread of the bacteria. Treatment for Codling Moth Alpine uses a combination of organic insecticides to combat codling moth. Dormant oil smothers overwintering eggs. Spinosad is a bacterial byproduct made through fermentation which, when consumed by the moth larvae, is effective within a few days. Cyd-X is a naturally occurring virus that can be spread from larvae to larvae and helps control the population of moths. Multiple applications should be done because these treatments have a relatively short lasting effect on any tree. At a minimum, we recommend one treatment when the trees are dormant, and another application timed to the hatch. Treasure Valley (208) Wood River Valley (208)

5 Starting A New Orchard? Here Are A Few Tips: Start with good soil. Soil should be well drained. If it doesn t have adequate organic matter (30%) add quality compost as an amendment. Active microbial life is important, specifically in the form of fungus. We can add or supplement with our own custom products: Alpine Custom Blend, Alpine 75 Bio-Mineral Tea and MycoTea, our mycorrizal inoculant. Place trees in areas of the yard that have full sun. Get your fruit trees from a local source, not all varieties do well in this climate. Talk to the nursery about pollination for the tree. You may need to plant more than one tree or plant varieties that bloom at the same time. Space dwarf trees 10 apart, and full size trees 20 apart. Trim trees within the first year in order to establish good structure and yearly maintenance thereafter.
