Neta Villalobos-Bell Cuplet Fern s Conservation Hero! For over 50 years, Neta Villalobos-Bell has rolled up her sleeves to work on many volunteer projects in her community. She shares her experience and enthusiasm for nature through presentations to garden clubs, nature centers, schools, and even TV. She was featured in an Orange County Government TV series Wildlife Matters to promote the benefits of gardening for wildlife. Neta is a former Certified Master Gardener and Certified Florida Master Naturalist with the University of Florida, and a Florida Certified Horticulture Professional with FNGLA (Florida Nursery, Growers, and Landscape Association). Neta has been heavily involved with the Seminole Audubon Society as a board member and president, where she and another member started a children s program with monthly educational trips and activities. She was a chapter representative on Audubon Florida Board for a few years. Her energy has also been focused on planting Florida native plants and restoring habitats at places like Crystal Lake Preserve in Lake Mary, Lake Lotus Park in Altamonte Springs, Geneva Wilderness Area and Kids House of Seminole, where she enhanced and transformed the perimeter of the property beyond the pond at Kids House into a wildlife habitat. Chapter Representative. One of her presentation highlights is returning every year to do a butterfly program for different gifted first and second grade students who are always inquisitive and enthusiastic about wildlife. In view of this dedication over many years the Chapter nominated Neta for the Regional Cox Conserves Hero and she won for the Central Florida Region! With the generous COX $10,000 donation, the Cuplet Fern Chapter can provide more youth with nature experiences through their ECO-CAMP Scholarships. About Cox Conserves Heroes The Cox Conserves Heroes awards program is how Cox Enterprises and The Trust for Public Land (TPL) honor the unsung heroes in our communities, as well as support the local organizations doing the important work of improving our environment. Through the program, they hope to inspire more people to take an active role in community conservation. To date, the national Cox Conserves Heroes program has donated $860,000 to environmental nonprofits and honored more than 200 volunteers. Part of the Cox Enterprises national Cox Conserves sustainability program, Cox Conserves Heroes, awards volunteers for their actions in Arizona, California, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington. She loves working in her yard which has been on a garden tour for both UF/IFAS (Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences) Extension Master Gardeners and Tarflower Chapter (Orange County) of the Florida Native Plant Society. In recent years she has been a shining star of our Cuplet Fern Chapter, (Seminole County) of the Florida Native Plant Society as a past President and - 3 -
The Central Florida Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CF CISMA) The Central Florida Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CF CISMA) is one of 16 CISMAs that cover the state of Florida. These CISMAs are voluntary regional partnerships consisting of any combination of the following: local governments, state agencies, federal agencies, tribes, zoos, non-profits, universities, extension services, private companies and private individuals. Their goal is to leverage resources between partners to treat invasive species, educate partners and the public and support invasive species management across the state. The CF CISMA was founded in 2007 and covers Seminole and Orange Counties. Our mission is to create a partnership of federal, state, and local government agencies, individuals, and various interested groups, that develop resources, educate and share information to manage invasive species in a specified area. Our goal is to support invasive species management efforts in Seminole and Orange Counties. More specifically, we hold one or two workshops per year to offer free training and Continuing Education Units (CEUs). We also apply for and receive grants for outreach and invasive species treatment. Past projects have included several Grass Identification workshops with expert instructors like Dr. David Hall and Dr. Walter Kingsley Taylor. We attend events and festivals throughout the region including the Orlando Science Center spring event, Master Gardener events in both Orange and Seminole Counties, Orlando Wetlands festival, and many others. We also give presentations on CISMAs and invasive species at conferences and to garden clubs, FNPS, Master Gardeners, and the general public. We also apply for and receive grants to support our outreach and invasive plant treatment efforts. We have partnered with Oakland Nature Preserve since 2011 assisting them with funding for treatment of invasive plants in their restoration areas that they received because of their partnership with the CF CISMA. For more information please go to The Tarflower and Cuplet Fern Chapters have both been integral partners since the CISMA s inception. The connection is simple, invasive species disrupt native plants and animals. Our organization has a very similar goal as FNPS to help maintain and promote native habitats. For volunteer opportunities, please swilliams02@seminolecountyfl.gov. Sherry Williams Co-Chair Central Florida CISMA - 4 -

Berries are for the Birds Add color to your yard and help birds and other animals with berries. Many birds rely on berries for a food source. Berries are especially important during the winter months and early spring. Below are some plants found in Central Florida with berries for the birds. Flowers of these plants produce nectar for bees and butterflies. Sand Blackberry (Rubus cuneifolius) is an erect shrub that grows to about three feet tall in dry sites. Leaflets have white or gray hairs on their undersides. Flowers appear in late winter and early spring. Blooms are white and born in clusters. There are other species and varieties of blackberry that will do well in Central Florida. Wild Coffee Wild Coffee (Psychotria nervosa) has glossy evergreen leaves and can grow to five feet in dry to moist soil. Grows in partial shade to full sun. Small white flowers and red fruit occur throughout the year. Winged Sumac (Rhus capallina) is a fast growing rhizomatous shrub to ten feet. Grows best in dry soil in partial shade to full sun. Flowering occurs in summer with berries following in autumn and winter on female trees. Berries are eaten by a variety of animals. Wax Myrtle (Myrica cerifera) is a small tree that will grow in shade but will do better in full sun. Prefers moist conditions and will produce suckers. Flowers appear on female plants spring to fall. Fruit is a staple for winter resident birds. Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitora) is a large shrub. Females produce red berries in late fall. The berries give a Christmas effect in December. Walter's Viburnum (Viburnum obovatum) is a Walter s Viburnum densely branched and leaved shrub that can vary from four to twenty feet, may lose some foliage in winter. Spring produces white flowers. The flowers produce green berries that turn black when ripe and are eaten by birds and small wildlife. Elderberry (Sambucus simpsonii) is a large suckering shrub. Flowers appearing in mid spring to late summer produce clusters of small berries. Fire Bush (Hamelia patens) is an evergreen about 7 x 7 feet that grows best in full sun. Tubular yellow to red flowers become black berries in late summer. Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) is a medium sized deciduous tree. Small flowers appear as leaves emerge in spring on female trees. Red fruit will become black berries. Drought in spring reduces number of berries. Fire Bush Information obtained from A Gardener's Guide to Florida Native Plants (Osorio) and Florida Wildflowers (Taylor)
Upcoming Meetings All meetings are held at the Sanford Garden Club, 200 Fairmont, Sanford and are free and open to the public. Florida Native Plants are available at all meetings for a donation. For updates or clarifications closer to the time, visit our website, check out our Facebook page, or call us at (352) for more information. Native Plants Feed Migrating Birds January 14, 2019, 7PM Speaker: Faith Jones Each spring tiny song birds fly thousands of miles from their winter homes in the Tropics to their nesting grounds in North America. Each fall they make the journey in reverse. This program will not only explain the vital role native plants play in these birds survival, but will also include information on important plants. There will also be a pre-program short discussion about being bear-conscious in Seminole County. Pruning and Maintenance of Native Plants February 11, 2019, 7PM Speaker: Nick Giannola Nick is currently the nursery manager at Green Isle Gardens, overseeing the day to day functions of the nursery. During the past four years with Green Isle Gardens, Nick has gained boots on the ground experience working with natives, in both the nursery and landscape setting. He has been able to watch, first hand, the effects of different pruning techniques and their outcomes over a long persiod of time. There will also be a pre-program short discussion about the Youth Eco Camp in Seminole County. Members report volunteer hours. Seminole IFAS Master Gardener s Program continuing education hours eligible! Florida Native Orchids March 11, 2019, 7PM Speaker: Prem Subramanyam Florida Edible Native Plants April 8, 2019, 7PM Speaker: Don Philpott Moths May 13, 2019, 7PM Speaker: Taylor Jones Restoring a Sandhill: Research and Outreach in an Urban Habitat Fragment June 10, 2019, 7PM Speakers: Cynthia Bennington, Karen Cole The Volusia Sandhill Ecosystem Teaching Landscape, an ongoing, small-scale (1 acre) restoration of the historic longleaf pine forests of central Florida, was established in 2011 on the perimeter of Stetson University s campus, and adjacent to the university s earth science museum. Recognizing that the site is far too small to be considered a true ecological restoration, it is nevertheless perfectly suited to extend the educational outreach of the Gillespie Museum and to provide space for undergraduate research projects related to the ecological restoration of degraded urban spaces. With a current emphasis on the role of this urban fragment as a refuge for insect pollinators, we are working to increase the diversity of the understory and to create educational materials describing the importance of native insect species to native plant reproduction. We will share progress we have made, challenges met along the way, and our optimism for the future
Upcoming Field Trips and Activities Most field trips are free and open to the public. Please call (407) for reservations in case we need to change the schedule or location. Also, some venues have limites on the number of people that my be accommondated. Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive UCF Herbarium January 12, 2019, 9AM Trip Leader: Beth Jackson Perez Meet at Magnolia Park, 2929 S Binion Road, Apopka Free, but reservations required This event comes right in time to catch the spring bird migrations! Carpooling is highly recommended as the wildlife drive will stay busy and the pull over points can handle only a handful of cars at a time. We will caravan along the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, a one-way 11-mile drive, beginning at Lust Road and ending on Jones Road. We will stop along the way at pull over areas to observe and discuss what we see. The former farmlands that make up the Lake Apopka North Shore includes marsh and floodplain restoration and the creation of a marsh flow-way that filters Lake Apopka s waters by circulating lake water through restored wetlands, returning cleaner water to the lake. After our drive, we can return to picnic at Magnolia Park. Bring water, a hat, insect repellent, a bagged lunch, sunglasses, and sun screen. Binoculars and longdistance cameras, if you have them, are encouraged. February 16, 2019, 8:45AM Trip Leader: Dr. Elizabeth Harris Please join esteemed Herbarium curator Dr. Elizabeth Harris as we tour through the research pavilion adjacent to the UCF Arboretum offices. The UCF Herbarium was founded in 1968 for the deposit, curation, and study of preserved plant and fungi specimens. Vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, lichens, fungi and macro-algae can all be found in the collections of the UCF Herbarium. The growing collection includes over 20,000 specimens some dating back to the 1920s. Some of the notable collections deposited in the UCF Herbarium include those made by Mary Singeltary, Harvey A. Miller, Sam Hopkins, Henry Whittier, and Paul O. Schallert. Numerous UCF undergraduate and graduate students have also donated specimens, many serving as vouchers for their research and theses
