1 Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection Dear Water Authority of Great Neck North Customer, It is my pleasure to share some exciting news on behalf of the Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection (LICAP). The Water Authority of Great Neck North community has been selected to participate in our Smart Sprinkler System Lottery! LICAP will be giving away a limited number of FREE Smart Irrigation Controllers and providing rebates of up to $250 for installation! These Smart Sprinklers Systems can save customers thousands of dollars on their water bills over a lifetime, and help protect the environment by reducing stress on Long Island s sole source aquifer. To enter the Smart Sprinkler Lottery just fill out the attached form and send to LICAP at P.O. Box 38, Oakdale, NY or the form to LICAP@SCWA.com. You can also visit our website for easy e-signup: The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection is a bi-county entity formed to address both quality and quantity issues facing Long Island s aquifer system, and to advocate for a coordinated, regional approach to groundwater resources management. We hope you participate in this unique opportunity. Please see the attached materials for lottery eligibility and participation requirements. The Water Authority of Great Neck North lottery will take place on April 26, 2018 at 6 PM at the Great Neck House, located at 14 Arrandale Avenue, Great Neck, NY We hope to see you there! Sincerely, Stan Carey Chairman, Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection

2 Protect our Island s Water, Take the Water Wise Pledge Join in pledging to protect and conserve Long Island s drinking water I pledge to conserve water. I understand that Long Island s water is a valuable resource and I commit to preserve our water by making small changes in my daily life to reduce my water use. Conserving water can be rewarding and cost effective, and small changes can make a huge difference. Here are a few things I can do to help save water: Check for and repair dripping faucets and leaking toilets throughout the home. Inspect my landscape irrigation system regularly for leaks and malfunctioning equipment. Turn off the faucet when brushing teeth or shaving. Operate the washing machine and dishwasher with full loads only. Install low flow faucet aerators, flow restrictors, toilet tank displacement bags, and low flow showerheads. Turn the sprinkler off when it s raining. All automatic underground lawn sprinkler systems must be equipped with a working rain sensor. Water my lawn and gardens in the early morning or late evening to avoid unnecessary evaporation or wind drift. Mulch my landscape and leave grass clippings on my lawn to help retain moisture. Use a timer to turn sprinklers off and avoid overwatering. Use a broom (not a hose) to clean driveways and sidewalks, as washing sidewalks and driveways are prohibited at all times. Landscape your property using native vegetation and drought tolerant grasses that require little water or only rainfall. Get a rain barrel and use captured rain water for car washing, lawn watering, etc. Utilize hoses that have automatic shutoff nozzles. If your water bills are higher than normal, a free leak inspection is offered. Please call to schedule. Become Water Wise so you can protect our Environment and Conserve Water. 3 LICAP SMART SPRINKLER SYSTEM LOTTERY What is a Smart Sprinkler System? A Smart Sprinkler System is an irrigation controller that can be operated through a Smartphone, tablet or laptop. The smart controller manages the entire irrigation process of a home. Through Wi-Fi the controller connects to local weather stations and various sensors throughout the irrigation system monitoring precipitation, soil temperatures and evapotranspiration rates. Each zone in the irrigation system can be programmed to specify the grass type, number of shrubs/plants, and shade or sun levels to prevent oversaturation and runoff. Standard clock sprinkler timers are often set at the beginning of the season and forgotten about until the systems are shut off in the winter; Smart controllers are designed to remove all of the human error involved in managing a home's irrigation system.

4 Award Summary SMART SPRINKLER SYSTEM LOTTERY OVERVEW EPA reports have estimated that more than 50 percent of commercial and residential irrigation water use goes to waste due to evaporation, improper system design or overwatering. Since irrigation represents the most significant water use on Long Island, reducing watering inefficiencies will reduce water waste and further conservation efforts. The purpose of a Smart Sprinkler System is to increase the efficiency of an irrigation system. A Smart Sprinkler System is an irrigation controller operated through a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
