2 Comment from the top Norman Hambrook M.D. Gardens are the answer Did you know that aiming for a healthier lifestyle, improving your fitness and wellbeing can be achieved through your garden? Being in your garden pottering about not only helps to reduce stress levels it also helps to reduce the risk of other chronic diseases. The Royal Horticultural Society recently undertook a survey and discovered that 80% of gardeners say it helps them to keep fit. Wellbeing It s good news even if gardening is not your passion, as sitting out and connecting with nature amongst plants and greenery is well proven to have a positive impact on our mental wellbeing. So, all you need for feeling good in 2018 is out there in the garden waiting for you. Furthermore, using your gardens for social events and family gatherings is becoming ever more popular. Outdoor entertaining Despite the fact that the weather in the UK is generally inclement, as a nation we are embracing the Mediterranean al fresco lifestyle. Outdoor entertaining is still a key trend for 2018 with many of us looking for gardens that incorporate dedicated areas to entertain and relax in. Sunken firepits, outdoor kitchens and pizza ovens, increasingly sophisticated pergolas and verandas are all gaining popularity. We find most of our clients asking us for these must have items when we are redesigning their garden. Other Key Trends Other key trends include encouraging wildlife into our gardens, although to my mind this has been on the garden radar for some years now, and the same for the trend to grow and produce our own food. This apparently means that greenhouses are making a comeback, but I have yet to see this. Artificial grass continues to grow in popularity because of its natural look and feel and the fact it suits low maintenance gardens. Call today for an informal chat on Please ask about our other services that include: Seasonal General Garden Maintenance Aftercare Plant Service Patio and Drive Maintenance Lighting and Irrigation Lawn Care & Repair Pest and Disease Control While many of us are very capable of creating our own gardens, equally there are many more of us who would love a beautiful garden but just do not have either the time or the experience to maximise the potential of our outdoor spaces. No matter how large or small, to create a garden with visual impact requires specialist skills and knowledge. Modern living is all about gardens that create additional living areas, so to transform your garden effectively and brilliantly you need the clever combination of both design and colour. What makes a good garden design? As we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, we can probably recall when we have come across simple, even very small gardens that look stunning and yet we can t quite put our finger on why. We can spot elements of the garden that instantly appeal, yet there is something unseen that brings it all together. This is the real essence of great design because it appears natural while combining atmosphere, shapes, textures and focus. Good designers also have extensive knowledge of spatial design, which combines interior and exterior design so both house and garden appear seamless. When is a good time to plan a new garden? Although it really does not matter what time of the year you decide to have a new garden, in our experience we find early autumn is a good time because you tend to use your garden slightly less than in the summer and it is less disruptive. Also, you may like the winter months for planning then you can organise an early installation in the spring so you are ready to enjoy your garden in the summer. We don't know where to begin - who can we speak to? Whether you have an established garden and would like a border makeover or a complete renovation, we have the horticultural expertise and knowledge to rejuvenate your garden. We plant fresh ideas in your garden 8 Call us today on to arrange an initial free visit to your home Mike Hodges Award Winning Designer Call into our Garden Design Centre in Titchfield and talk to one of our award-winning designers who will be very happy to discuss initial ideas with you and arrange for a free site visit. We have a design studio on site and a coffee courtyard where you can relax with light refreshments. We look forward to seeing you and helping you create the garden of your dreams! 9

7 Sponsorships We strongly feel that businesses and charities can work together to find common causes that not only benefit the local community, but also help to raise awareness on issues that are of national and global importance. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife We are a Corporate Supporter of the HIWWT and when we designed sixteen new Show Gardens at our centre in Titchfield, we wanted to include a wildlife garden to help raise awareness of their ecological importance. With the help and guidance of The Hampshire Wildlife Trust we achieved our goal and became the first business in Hampshire to receive a Wildlife Garden Award. As both parties have a natural bond through nature and plants it is a great partnership. Breast Cancer Haven Titchfield We do hope you will join us for The Big Tea Cosy on the 8th March. We are dedicating one of our Show Gardens to the charity and it is all in pink! We are helping to raise funds for this amazing local charity that supports anyone who is affected by breast cancer. The Centre offers counsellors, therapists and health professionals for emotional, practical and physical support free of charge and relies solely on fund raising events to keep the Centre going. Please do check our website and Social Media as we will be holding further events during the year. National Garden Scheme For some years now we have supported the National Gardening Scheme (NGS) in its worthwhile scheme to encourage people to open their gardens to the public. While anyone can visit our Show Gardens in Titchfield any time we use the opportunity to encourage donations to the scheme that supports so many charities including Parkinson s UK, Marie Curie and the National Autistic Society. The NGS was founded in 1927 off the back of an organisation championed by Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria that supported district nurses for local communities. In the first year, more than 600 gardens opened, charging a shilling for entrance, which raised over 8k. See our EVENTS page for details. British Legion This year marks the 100th year Anniversary of the end of the First World War. The British Legion is launching a special WW1 Centenary called The Silent Soldier featuring life-size silhouettes than can be sponsored by businesses and local organisations. The silhouettes symbolise Tommy returning home silently from the war and for those who didn t get to come home. We are dedicating one of our Show Gardens to this Centenary and will be holding a special fundraising Event in the early autumn. Details to follow in our Autumn & Winter Magazine. Take a Walk on the Wild side Do you know there are approximately 15 million gardens in the UK? This means if we all made a few simple changes to our outdoor spaces to make them more wildlife friendly, we would have a wonderful opportunity to make a big difference to our local biodiversity. Many of us believe it is a complicated process and perhaps would not fit in with our ideas of what we want our gardens to look like. By just adding a couple of extra features you can still do your bit to encourage the appearance of not only bees, birds, butterflies, ladybirds and dragonflies, but also small mammals such as hedgehogs. Take a look around your garden and see how you might adapt what you already have to make it more wildlife friendly. One of the best features for supporting wildlife is a well-maintained pond, which is a haven for birds, insects, small animals and plants. However, if you don t have the space for installing a pond, even a small water feature will help. Have you thought of buying of nectar rich plants and shrubs that attract birds and bees? Find out about shrubs that bear berries during the winter months and choose perennials such as sedum and yarrow that carry seed heads after flowering as these can provide a vital food source for birds and insects. Fed up with slugs and snails eating your tender young plants? Make your garden hedgehog friendly and you never need worry again! Hedgehogs, as their names suggests, live mostly in hedges, and in the last decade their numbers have dropped by an all time low of 25%. There are a number of reasons for this including the fact we tend to put up fences rather than grow hedges in our gardens. If you have fences then cut a small hole in the bottom of the fence so hedgehogs can travel more easily in their hunt for food. Go on take a walk on the wildside! 12 13
