Randy Tischer President - Green Velvet Sod Farms If you follow the news, Western states - especially California, have been in a severe drought for several years now. California s Governor, Jerry Brown, has mandated California residents cut their water consumption by a minimum of 25% in the next year. Governor Brown insists that turfgrass is at the top of the list with regard to wasting water, and is offering residents rebates of over $5.00 per sq ft to rip out their natural turf lawns and replace them with desert landscaping mainly rocks/gravel and a few desert plants. One company in California that has cashed in on this government funded program is Turf Terminators, who have grown from 3 to over 500 employees in less than 1 year! Turf Terminators helps the homeowner handle all the steps of the rebate process. The homeowner assigns the rebate to Turf Terminators in exchange for a new - free drought friendly design. See their website at to learn more. The take home lesson for us here in the Midwest is to never take for granted our most valuable natural resource - one that we are blessed with so much of --- WATER. Enjoy the fact that your kids can play on a front yard that is composed of soft green grass and not gravel and rocks. I love irrigation systems, but irrigate wisely. How many times have you driven by a lawn whose irrigation system is running during or just after a heavy rainstorm? Only time will tell if ripping out natural turf is the right decision for the drought stricken west. With no grass to provide cooling, or prevent soil erosion, is the elimination of all turfgrass the right decision or just a knee jerk reaction to a much larger problem? I just hope and pray that the day a Turf Terminator truck drives down my street, I will be long gone from this earth! (Photos below from
