2 The Single Most Important Fertilization of the Year: Late Season High Nitrogen Fertilization! While most lawns need to be fertilized at least 4-5 times throughout the year, if you were to only fertilize your property once a year, the Late Season, High Nitrogen Fertilization that is best applied in the month of November would be it! If applied at the correct time, and at the proper rate, Late Season High Nitrogen fertilizations will provide the grass plant with the food it needs to grow the most fantastic root system over the winter months, as well as provide early spring green-up as an added bonus! A key factor in this fertilization is timing. You must wait until the grass plant begins to enter early stages of winter dormancy. Here in South and Central Ohio, this is usually in Mid-November. When you think you have mowed your property for the final time this year, put your mower away, get your fertilizer spreader out and spread your High Nitrogen, Water Soluble fertilizer. Green Velvet recommends using our or Late Season fertilizers. If timed and applied correctly, the grass plant will convert the High Nitrogen fertilizer into carbohydrates. It will then use this food to grow roots all winter long! Here at Green Velvet, we have been applying High Nitrogen Fertilizer to our turf in November for many years and we never cease to be amazed at the grass plant s ability to dramatically increase its rooting system throughout the winter months. Think your turfgrass is asleep all winter long? Think again! Late Season High Nitrogen fertilization the single most important fertilization of your turfgrass during the entire season! Which Fertilizer Should You Apply? All Mineral Fertilizer (to be used for final late season fertilization of the year) Late Season Fertilizer All mineral lawn fertilizer. To be applied November through early December. Great rapid release winter fertilizer. Recommended as Step 5 in Green Velvet s 5-Step Lawn Care Program. Coverage: 16,000 sq ft/bag 50 lb bag 2 GREEN VELVET TIMES Issue 198, Fall 2017

3 Let Mother Nature Do The Work Winter Dormant Seeding for Seeding Bare Spots in Your Lawn! Randy Tischer President - Green Velvet Sod Farms If there was ever a time during the year when you could simply throw grass seed out onto those bare spots in your lawn without any preparation at all, and expect success, winter dormant seeding is it! Timing is Critical! Do not spread your grass seed until the soil temperatures have dropped well below 50 F. Here in South and Central Ohio, this means that you should wait until at least Mid- December or even later. The principal behind Winter Dormant seeding is this: By waiting until your soil temperatures have dropped below 50 F, the grass seed that you apply to your lawn will get planted by the freezing, thawing, snows and rains throughout the Winter months but it will not germinate! You will see your grass seed slowly disappear, as it gets pulled into the soil throughout the months of January and February by this freezing and thawing action. Then, once Spring does arrive and the soil temperatures begin to rise above F, your grass seed, now planted by Mother Nature, will be the first plants to germinate! This gives your new grass plants a huge advantage over traditional Spring seedings! A Word of Caution: Do not apply traditional crabgrass and foxtail preemergent herbicides to your lawn until your winter Dormant seed has germinated and established! With the exception of Siduron, all other traditional pre-emergent herbicides will kill the germinating grass plant just as it kills the germinating crabgrass and foxtail in the Spring. Need help deciding which variety of grass seed you should be spreading? Give us a call Our Team is Here to help. Advantages of Potassium in Lawns Have you ever purchased a bag of fertilizer and wondered what the science is behind the numbers listed on the front of the bag (i.e )? Sure, you likely know what the numbers mean: N-P-K. Nitrogen Phosphorus - Potassium. But, the million dollar question is: Do you know what each of these nutrients is doing for your plant? To zero in on one nutrient that is vital in the cooler weather seasons, Potassium is plays its own unique role in helping your turfgrass survive the winter months! In an article from Turf Care Supply, here is a great listing of all that this beneficial nutrient does for your turfgrass plant: How Potassium Benefits Your Lawn Supports Root Development This will help strengthen your lawn by firmly rooting grass into the soil to create a route of nutrient uptake to ensure overall health. This aids in winter survival as well as helping it look great in spring. Activates Plant Enzymes used in Protein Starches and Sugar Absorption Allows easier absorption of the enzymes needed for plant survival, especially during periods of drought, temperature fluctuations and disease. Catalyzes Iron Uptake Encourages easier uptake of iron. Strengthens Plant Cell Walls A strong cell wall will aid plants in retaining key plant nutrients while allowing them to persist longer through the season. A stronger plant cell wall will increase moisture retention which will help in periods of drought. Promotes Stem and Leaf Growth Potassium aids in the photosynthesis process which plants go through to create their main source of energy, glucose. Maintains Turgor Pressure Regulates the amount of water that plants can intake. Creates Lawn Disease Resistance Potassium is a plant health booster that improves a lawn s resistance to grass and soil diseases, harsh weather and drought. Ensure that your turfgrass plant is getting the nutrients it needs to get through the cold weather months. Don t forget, soil testing is a phenomenal tool to get the dirt on your dirt and grow the healthiest lawn possible talk to a Green Velvet Team Member about your options! 4 [FALL]: the ideal time for weed control Now that the warm summer weather is behind us and we have dropped into those cooler fall temperatures, you should consider using a few specific herbicide products that will still take control of nuisance broadleaf and grassy weeds in your lawns! If you have been struggling to control not just grassy weeds such as crabgrass, but also broadleaf weeds such as wild violet, ground ivy or white clover, to name a few, fall is an ideal time of year to eliminate these from your lawn. The method behind this fall herbicide timing has to do with the fact that these weeds will be starting to store carbohydrates down in their root systems, preparing for cooler weather; which also makes them more susceptible to herbicide applications. Once the herbicide has been applied, it is taken all the way through the plant s system down into the root area eventually killing off the entire plant if applied at the right time! If you wait too long to apply your herbicide, eventually the first frosts of fall will kill or send into dormancy these broadleaf and grassy weeds. However, you will likely experience continued weed issues next Spring. Visit your local Green Velvet Branch for advice on proper products to use for your fall herbicide applications! 6 Say No to Snow Mold Prepare NOW to Avoid Spring Issues When winter hits this year, don t leave yourself with an added headache come springtime when the snow melts away and your turf is suffering from Snow Mold damage; which can come in the form of Pink or Gray Snow Mold. There are a few simple things you can do now, before winter weather arrives, to help prevent Snow Mold from taking over your turfgrass: Pink snow mold in turfgrass. Gray snow mold in turfgrass. Tips For Avoiding Snow Mold Mow turf 1-1 ½ shorter than usual for your final mowing of the year Pre-treat your turfgrass with the proper fungicides such as Headway, Instrata and Pillar G to help grass return from dormancy in a healthy state Rake leaves off your lawn in the fall Avoid clearing snow into massive piles in the same spot on your grass throughout the winter If necessary, in the spring, repair and reseed any damaged areas as soon as possible Soil Remediation for Salt Damage Soil Remediation for Salt Damage: Count on Aqua-pHix and Black Gypsum DG Aqua-pHix and Black Gypsum DG are best known for their properties that help with soil compaction while also decreasing soil ph, salts and bicarbonates to produce healthier, thicker turf. These products also help remedy the havoc that wreaks on perimeter lawn areas throughout the winter months when the salt that is spread on roads and sidewalks leaches into the surrounding soil. Once the ice melts away, affected areas of your lawn may show signs of ph imbalance. Apply one of these great products in November before winter officially arrives, then again in the spring for best results and to keep your grass happy and healthy when it wakes back up from winter dormancy! Aqua-pHix Quickly decreases ph of soils to improve plant growth. Reduces unwanted salts and reduce bicarbonates in the soil. Makes nutrients more readily available for plant uptake. Minimizes leaching or runoff of fertilizer into streams, rivers, lakes and groundwater. Loosens soils to improve water infiltration and promote root growth. 50 lb bag, 2 x 2.5 gal/case Black Gypsum DG Enhances soil health by stimulating soil microbial populations and relieving compaction and salinity. Improves root development, plant nutrient uptake, and phosphorus stability. Provides secondary nutrients (calcium and sulfur). Dispersible granules are homogenous and combine natural gypsum and humic substances to form a unique bio-amendment. DG technology creates a dust-free, spherical, ultra-dry granule that rapidly disperses into thousands of microparticles upon contact with moisture. These microparticles deliver calcium, sulfur, and carbon directly into the soil. The DG technology allows for reduced application rates, as compared to other agricultural-grade gypsum products, which makes this a very economical soil amendment. 50 lb bag 6 GREEN VELVET TIMES Issue 198, Fall 2017
