1 GREEN VELVET TIMES ISSUE 181 SPRING 2013 In this Issue Here s what you ll find in our newly designed newsletter: It s Pre-Emergent Time! Spring Grass Seed Pricing... 3 Weed & Bug Control Recap of Our Latest Seminar.. 5 Great Pricing on Turface Athletics Products Check Out Our New Website! greenvelvet.com Tischer s Take on What to Expect in 2013 Grass Seed Update: For the first time in five years, turfgrass seed pricing has increased! This is due to several factors. Seed demand since 2005 has been declining each year, while growers have planted less acres for seed production. This, coupled with strong demand for the same production ground by high priced corn, soybeans and wheat have dramatically reduced the amount of grass seed available to the U.S. market this spring. Hardest hit have been Turf Type Tall Fescue and Perennial Ryegrass. Shortages of the most desirable varieties are already showing up. Expect these high prices to continue throughout the spring and early summer. Turfgrass Sod Update: Throughout the Midwest, there is actually a shortage of both Kentucky Bluegrass and Turf Type Tall Fescue sod to start off the 2013 season. Green Velvet is not immune to these shortages, and appreciates your understanding until our sod in production matures and becomes harvestable. The good news is that our 2012 fall seedlings look great and should be ready for harvest much earlier than normal. Supplying you with our Kentucky Bluegrass sod will be our biggest challenge this spring. We urge you to contact us before making any promises to your customers. 2 It s Pre-Emergent Time! Turf Pre-Emergents 2012 taught us all a valuable lesson depend on science to decide when to apply your crabgrass and foxtail preemergence NOT the calendar! Crabgrass and foxtail germinated almost 4 weeks earlier than ever before in 2012, due to the very mild winter we experienced. This year, trust science (and your soil thermometer) to decide when to apply your pre-emergence control products. When daytime and nighttime soil temperatures reach F, it s time to apply pre-emergents, as these are the temperatures we see crabgrass and foxtail germinate. Check out our SALE on Earthway Spreaders for spring applications! 4 Recapping a Record Event If you weren t able to attend our Educational Seminar in January, you missed an event for the record books! Our first ever dual-track seminar was a great success, with Golf and Lawn Care specific tracks running at the same time throughout the day. Over 220 attendees were able to mingle, learn, dine and even went home with a prize or two! ODA pesticide applicator and GCSAA recertifications were awarded to those seeking credits. Many guests took advantage of sitting in on talks in both the Golf and Lawn Care sides to hear the topics that really caught their attention. It was an all day educational experience at the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering. Our seven esteemed speakers represented the ODA, SePRO, Syngenta, BASF, Nature s Wonder and The Ohio State University. The educational portion of our event was rounded out by Keynote Speaker, Marty Grunder with Grunder Landscaping and Marty Grunder! Inc., with a 5 Steps to Success motivational talk on how to better yourself and your business. We should all be on the lookout for Marty s words of business wisdom to be in good company with the quotes of inspirational gurus far and wide! After all was said and done on the learning side of the event, our vendors gave away door prizes galore. Our seven generous vendors included BASF, Nufarm, Nature s Wonder, Miller Golf Consulting, The Andersons, ihammer and Syngenta. They pulled out the names of a plethora of lucky winners of prizes ranging from signed footballs to stylin Ray-Ban sunglasses. No guest left emptyhanded. Our sales staff handed out Green Velvet metallic grass green coffee mugs and the ever-popular Green Velvet baseball caps for our customers to sport. Since the event, we have received a great amount of positive feedback and appreciation from our customers who attended. Some saying it was the best event they ve attended ever! If you missed out on this one, don t make the same mistake twice! Green Velvet has plans in the making for another seminar for our much appreciated customers to attend! It goes without saying that our crew was honored to be in such good green thumb company at this day long learning event. Looking forward to the next one being even better than the last. See you there! Don t make the mistake of missing out on our next seminar. We re already planning how we will make the next one an even bigger and better event to be remembered!

5 Control Weeds in Spring Seedings with Square One and Tenacity Tenacity: Tenacity can be applied anytime you re seeding cool season turf, including bareground and overseeding of established turf. When applied at, or prior to seeding of Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Ryegass or cool season turf blends, Tenacity will reduce weed competition as new grass begins to emerge. Tenacity can also be used as a postemergent control of tough weeds! Tenacity is the only residential-approved herbicide that selectively removes nimblewill and bentgrass, plus over 40 dicot weeds including crabgrass, goosegrass, yellow nutsedge, ground ivy, foxtail and clover. RATE: 5 8 ozs/acre 8 oz bottle (SYNTAC8) 1 gallon jug (SYNTAC) Square One: Designed for newly seeded turf, Square One can be applied up to 1 day before, or 7 days after seeding. The product mixes easily in water for use in sprayers and/or tank mixed with starter fertilizers. A non-ionic surfactant is recommended. Square One is labeled for control of crabgrass and over 60 small broadleaf weeds, and can be used in both the spring and the fall. RATE: 8 ozs/acre 8 oz bottle (SQUAREONE) Tenacity can also be used as a post emergent control of tough weeds! Did Grubs and Billbugs Get the Best of Your Lawn in 2012?
