1 Major Strides Made by New Crop of Next Generation Luminaires Solid-State Lighting Design Competition Outdoor Winners SANTA CLARA, Calif. Twenty-six commercial LED outdoor lighting products were recognized for excellence by the Next Generation Luminaires TM (NGL) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition, it was announced last night at Strategies in Light. Continuing an NGL trend, the recognized products showed notable improvement on all fronts. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers, NGL was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaires for general illumination in commercial lighting applications. The competition began evaluating indoor and outdoor products separately in 2012, and the winners announced last night are the 2013 outdoor winners. Compared to previous years, the 2013 NGL outdoor results show a marked improvement in overall performance, with efficacies continuing to climb. Although the efficacy requirements were raised by 20 percent in 2013, the recognized products exceeded the challenge, with an average efficacy of 94 lm/w, compared with 66 lm/w in Light distribution is also improving, as is color quality important considerations and significant advances in both cases. The most frequent negative comments from judges focused on the need for improved glare control. In terms of design, the judges continue to see a few new approaches but would like to see more innovation across the board. The idea behind NGL is to make it easier for lighting designers and specifiers to find LED lighting products that are worthy of specification. This means recognized products have to measure up on many fronts. Does the product perform the intended function for the planned application? Does it control glare? Is it the right color? How easy or difficult was installation? Is it serviceable? How will it perform over time? NGL outdoor entries for 2013 were judged visually on color, appropriate illuminance, light distribution, glare control, appearance, serviceability, and value. Energy efficiency and lumen maintenance were evaluated quantitatively based on required documentation, and flexibility, innovation, and controllability were taken into consideration when appropriate. The Next Generation Luminaires design competition links energy efficiency with lighting quality, said DOE Solid-State Lighting Program Manager Jim Brodrick. To be recognized as a winner, a product has to be considered specifiable by the judges, who are a mighty tough bunch to please. A total of 102 products were proposed for submission to the 2013 NGL outdoor competition, but only 68 were approved to continue in the competition. The rest either weren t ready for market or lacked the required documentation, which included such things as LM-79 test reports and LM-80 life claim documentation and help ensure that actual performance matches claims.

2 The products making it to the judging phase were evaluated after dark at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. To evaluate the lighted performance and appearance, street and roadway luminaires were installed on poles at appropriate heights along roadways, parking lot luminaires were installed on a truss in a parking area, parking garage luminaires were installed indoors, and buildingmounted or landscape luminaires were installed on or near exterior facades or indoors. The hands-on process allowed judges to evaluate not only how the products performed but also how easy they were to install and service a critical consideration for outdoor applications, where installation and maintenance are typically very costly. Judges were able to record comments for manufacturers on ipads that were used throughout the evaluations. The 68 products that were judged represented 41 different manufacturers and covered 12 different outdoor-lighting categories. Of those products, 26 were chosen as Recognized winners, meaning the judges considered them worthy of specification. Of the 26 recognized products, six received the additional designation of Best in Class the largest number of Best in Class winners of any NGL competition to date. A Best in Class distinction meant the product stood out significantly above the others in its category that were recognized as specifiable. The Best in Class winners came from five different manufacturers and covered six areas of outdoor lighting. LED Roadway Lighting was selected for its NXT-S local residential roadway fixture, Juno Lighting Group for its Finia building perimeter wallpack and its PL2 series bollard, Cooper Lighting by Eaton for its McGraw-Edison Top Tier parking and area luminaire, Louis Poulsen Lighting for its LP ICON LED pedestrian walkway fixture, and Cree for its CPY250 canopy luminaire. In the Recognized category, EcoSense Lighting, the Lighting Quotient, and Philips earned praise for their facade accent lighting. Selux Corporation (two fixtures) was recognized for bollards, and Eureka Lighting for decorative lighting. In parking and area lighting, fixtures by Evolucia, Horner Lighting Group, and Cooper Lighting by Eaton were selected. Intense Lighting was also chosen for its pedestrian walkway handrail/guardrail fixture. Major roadway lighting was also popular, with recognition given to designs by Toshiba, Evolucia, and Schreder Lighting LLC. Evluma was recognized for local residential roadway lighting, Schreder Lighting LLC for collector roadway lighting, and Horner Lighting Group for canopy lighting. Three building perimeter wallpack fixtures were recognized: from Juno Lighting Group, Hubbell Outdoor Lighting, and RAB Lighting. In the other category, the Acuity Brands Holophane tunnel/underpass fixture received recognition The awards were presented at Strategies in Light in Santa Clara, CA, the evening of February 26, By encouraging new designs and technologies, Next Generation Luminaires aims to increase market acceptance and awareness of LEDs for general-illumination lighting.

Of the 68 evaluated products, 26 were selected as Recognized, meaning the judges would recommend them to other specifiers. From among all of these Recognized products, the judges were asked to identify at their discretion any that they considered Best in Class. To attain this level, a product had to both stand out from the others and be evaluated at the top of a majority of evaluation categories. Thus, products named Best in Class had to be more than just the highest-ranked of the group. Most of the categories did not have a product that was awarded this distinction. BEST IN CLASS WINNERS Bollard Pathway Lighting PL2 Series Bollard by Juno Lighting Group The PL2 Series Bollard uses carefully crafted optics to produce a unique star-shaped light pattern on the ground while minimizing glare for pedestrians. The PL2 is available with a multitude of options, including a concealed motion sensor, emergency lighting, custom lengths, and custom colors.

5 Local Residential Roadway Lighting NXT-S by LED Roadway Lighting The modular design of NXT allows users to upgrade or replace light engines or power supplies, without tools. The optical distribution pattern can also be changed for additional flexibility. Building Perimeter Lighting Finia by Juno Lighting Group Finia LED architectural luminaire is designed for security and area lighting applications that need high levels of illumination. It s best suited for mounting heights up to 25 feet. Several options are available to improve energy efficiency, visual comfort, and safety. Parking and Area Lighting McGraw-Edison Top Tier by Cooper Lighting by Eaton The TopTier uses the patented WaveStream optical technology to block the line of sight from the LED light sources to the observer, while directing the maximum amount of light on the target area.

6 Canopy Perimeter Lighting CPY250 by Cree The CPY250 luminaire with its slim, low-profile design can mount to virtually any canopy/soffit and can be used for both upgrades and new-construction installations. It is available with a flat or prismatic drop lens. Pedestrian Walkway Lighting LP ICON LED by Louis Poulsen Lighting The LP ICON LED fixture provides predominantly direct downward illumination. The opal version uses a shade to create a soft, diffused upward light, while the shade of the basic version is opaque. Downward lighting characteristics will vary with the reflector choice. RECOGNIZED WINNERS Major Roadway Lighting LED Cobrahead by Evolucia The CBH 200 Series is a high-output LED roadway luminaire designed exclusively with Aimed Optics technology for various roadway applications. The CBH 200 directs light to the target area, with the fewest number of LEDs and the most efficiency.

7 Ampera Maxi by Schreder Lighting LLC The Ampera Maxi can be incorporated in major roadway, street-collector, and pole-mounted residential lighting applications. It is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize the total cost of ownership. The Maxi is the largest of three sizes available from the Ampera product line. TLS-RTLM LED by Toshiba The TLS-RTLM LED roadway luminaire offers a proprietary integral photo cell system with automatic dimming capabilities. It is offered with short and medium decks and is available in IES Type II, III, IV, and V distributions. Collector Roadway Lighting Ampera Midi by Schreder Lighting LLC The Ampera Midi can be incorporated in major roadway, street-collector, and pole-mounted residential lighting applications. It is designed to maximize efficiency and minimize the total cost of ownership. The Midi is the smallest of three sizes available from the Ampera product line.

Multiple color temperatures and lens configurations are available, including a dark-skyfriendly full cutoff lens. Parking and Area Lighting LED NightWatchMan by Evolucia The LED NightWatchMan Luminaire is designed for outdoor lighting applications that require a wide distribution of light, and can be mounted up to 30 feet high. Canopy Perimeter Lighting CP80 Remote Phosphor Canopy by Horner Lighting Group The CP80 utilizes silicone remote-phosphor modules to create a light pattern that matches traditional undercanopy lights. It can be dimmed using conventional Triac, 0-10, or PWM control devices as well as Horner Lighting Group specific wired or wireless approaches.

10 Building Perimeter Lighting MSL Series by Juno Lighting Group The MSL2 luminaire is a compact security light for commercial installations with mounting heights up to 10 feet. The MSL2 is ADA-compliant and can be ordered with an optional daylight sensor for additional energy savings. Laredo LNC2 by Hubbell Outdoor Lighting The compact Laredo LED LNC2 wallpack delivers a spacing-to-mounting height ratio of up to 5:1, which means fewer fixtures are required. Single or double LED drivers are available. The LNC2 wallpack is designed for a wide variety of applications. SLIM18N by RAB Lighting The SLIM low-profile LED wallpack is available in 12W, 18W, and 26W versions. It can be mounted as either an up-light or a down-light, and comes with a 5-year warranty.
