Submission Process Manufacturer submits the intent form Manufacturer submits documentation NGLS team verifies the proposed submission NGLS sends the specific room layout to the manufacturer. Manufacturer submits proposed system NGLS reviews the submittal NGLS approves system Manufacturer builds and ships system Entries are installed onsite by qualified electrical contractors. Evaluations take place over a series of months.
Submission Requirements General Marketed as easy to install and configure. Entrants must submit an appropriate number of luminaires Additional luminaire submitted for table-top evaluation. Partnering between multiple manufacturers is acceptable Submitted luminaire retrofit kits must exactly match documentation submitted. Luminaire Retrofit Kit Luminaire retrofit kit must effectively create a completely new luminaire. Control Components Submissions shall be a complete, integrated system Capable of localized processing/distributed intelligence Integrated, luminaire-level sensing and control. Control components shall be provided fully assembled Remote user interfaces shall communicate with the lighting system wirelessly. Systems with default energy saving operation is preferred.
Lighting Performance Requirements Task Plane Illumination Illuminance Uniformity Maximum Luminance Ratio Average initial at full power Average to minimum across work plane Between task and immediate background surfaces Between task and distant background surfaces (ceiling, walls, floor) fc 2:1 3:1 10:1 or 1:10 Connected Lighting Power Density of not more than 1.0w/SF 19
Control Performance Requirements 1. Grouped into two zones as indicated on the room layout drawing. Manual dimming to 10% for each zone. 2. Occupancy control for each of two zones, turns OFF, time out period of 5 minutes. Vacancy operation auto off, manual on. 3. Daylight harvesting light level in daylight zone changes in response to daylight. 4. High end trim/task tuning required capability, no specific setting specified. 5. Control settings shall be adjustable by the user without factory assistance. 20

Lessons Learned
Specifier Clear specification (not necessarily detailed) is critical Identify the must haves vs. nice to haves Capability (good) comes at the price of complexity and cost Simplicity and economy (good) come at the price of extended functionality Carefully review and respond to system submittals Choose an experienced installer (or one you trust to learn quickly) Require documentation and training on the system Consider Labeling the wall controls 43
Vocabulary In the Field 44
Supply Chain In many cases, easy is not so easy! Participate in the installer s first project Help train the installer in advance Check that all components arrive correctly Be prepared to explain the documentation and connect to online resources Be sure that the user is trained on the system 45
Manufacturer Test the product and installation sheet (IS) with installers (not just your engineers) Use good illustrations and simple copy for IS Create drawings as installer will see it during the install IS in the app are easier than reading printed IS Installer s first impression is critical the IS needs an overview. Make it easy to find online videos (good for set up/install) and guides Quick Set Up guide is important; defer complicated options for advanced Have a clear, reliable chain for tech support, so installers can easily reach someone who really knows! 46
Documentation In the Field 47
How We Plan to Release Findings Conference presentations Feature articles in target publications NGLS website One pagers by topic and audience 48
Next Steps If there is consensus that things should be done the same way work on standards If there are multiple ways to do things work on templates or models If there is no consensus conduct more studies to figure it out 49
