Freight is big business but the public perception of heavy goods vehicles is poor. They are seen as highly dangerous machines that dominate the highways and cause collisions, congestion and noise pollution. Statistically HGV drivers are safer than car drivers, having half as many accidents per miles travelled, but the nature of HGVs mean that when an accident does occur, the consequences can be far reaching. Every year, about 400 road users in the EU lose their lives in accidents because lorry drivers fail to notice them in their blind spot. Generally the larger and heavier a vehicle is, the more likely it is to cause fatalities in a collision. Fully laden vehicles can weigh anything up to 44 tonnes. In addition, the nature of road haulage means these vehicles spend a lot of time driving at relatively high speeds on motorways, often during peak times, dramatically increasing the risk of collisions. The vast size of HGVs create extensive blind spots to the rear, side, front and nearside of the cab. Reversing accidents account for a quarter of all workplace vehicle accidents. Delivering by night would seem like the perfect solution and delivers significant cost savings. In the past, however, councils permitting night time deliveries have seen a surge in noise complaints, particularly from residents woken by loud beeping reversing alarms. Removing or disabling reversing alarms solves the noise problem, but compromises safety and has seen fatal consequences. The newly developed Silent Approach Scheme offers a way for freight companies to operate safely at night without disturbing the neighbours. The scheme brings a unique collaboration between local authority, residents (represented by the Noise Abatement Society) and distribution centres. A trial is conducted using a vehicle with a range of silent technologies, including Brigade s white sound reversing alarm. Following a successful application for night time restrictions to be lifted, the operator must follow the 'silent approach' best practice guidelines. Night time deliveries According to the Department for Transport, more than half of all cyclist deaths in London are caused by collisions with goods vehicles due to the nearside blind spot. Keltbray, the largest specialist demolition and civil engineering contractor in the UK, has adopted a range of safety measures to combat this problem, including a number of Brigade Electronics' safety devices. Keltbray controls a fleet of 32 tipper lorries, taking waste to be recycled or restored, or to specialist landfill sites. Each tipper weighs around 32 tonnes, and the length and height of each tipper creates huge blind spots, particularly to the rear and nearside. Many road users, particularly cyclists, are unaware of the driver blind spot at the nearside of a HGV and fail to position themselves correctly at junctions and roundabouts, leading to serious accidents. Keltbray fitted Brigade s Sidescan ultrasonic obstacle detection systems to its entire fleet to detect anyone in the nearside blind spot, warning them when a vehicle is about to turn left, whilst also warning the driver. The four sensors were fitted along the bottom of the cab to the nearside, with a Backchat speaker (real speech warning alarm) fitted behind the cab. The sensors are linked to the left indicator, providing a visual and audible warning to the driver when anything is detected in the danger zone, plus a spoken message warning pedestrians and cyclists that the vehicle is about to turn left. The dual function system alerts both parties to the hazard, allowing them to take avoiding action. As our roads are so congested in the day, it makes sense to allow deliveries at night. For operators it improves fuel consumption, journey times and man hours, as well as providing environmental benefits.
