LA-930 Instrument Design The LA-930 features all the functionality of Horiba s acclaimed LA-920 and LA-910 analyzers, together with new and improved software and hardware, to help you solve the most difficult application issues. The heart of the modern laser diffraction particle size analyzer is the optical system. The LA-930 employs Horiba's unique optical system that takes full advantage of the light scattering behavior of particles, without compromise. Horiba's approach directly correlates to the requirements of ISO The LA-930 uses an optical system with 87 detectors and dual wavelength light sources to provide unmatched precision and resolution. The design is the result of the constant development by Horiba's R&D to optimize performance. The forward detector uses logarithmically spaced detector positions, along with increasing area to compensate for the decreasing scattered light intensity for smaller particles. Precision automatic alignment system maintains optimal alignment at all times for precise large particle (small scattering angle) measurement. Contrary to instruments using linear detectors or a multiple of smaller detectors, Horiba's design maximizes the signal to noise ratio, something that cannot be compensated for after measurement. For the smaller particles, the detector system continues over the full angular range in a consistent fashion to capture an accurate picture of the entire light intensity distribution. Using the full Mie Theory in a consistent approach through the sub-micron range eliminates the possibility of discontinuities or errors caused by using an inappropriate optical theory, blending of two distinctly different analytical techniques, or the limitations of the wavelength of the light source. Horiba uses a 0.4 m wavelength, the shortest used for Mie scattering measurements in the industry. 3 Full Performance Verification and Validation Support Measurement Reliability The LA-930 final inspection certificate verifies that Horiba s production system follows international standards and is calibrated by using NIST traceable standards. The benefits of Horiba s dedicated development of the light scattering particle size analysis technique can be seen in the impressive measurement performance of the LA-930. Unsurpassed accuracy, resolution, and reproducibility allow for consistent transfer of methods between sites and correlation of results with suppliers or customers. Guaranteed data accuracy & repeatability using specified NIST traceable polystyrene latex standards with in 2%, as well as wider distribution specific standard to be compliant to the ISO standard covering particle sizing by the laser diffraction method (ISO ). This accuracy is confirmed by using Horiba s quality audit standard. Calibration of the detector system during manufacturing optimizes each instrument to ideal conditions. This provides the ultimate in accuracy and consistent response from instrument to instrument, making it possible to list specifications for accuracy and precision that are unprecedented in the industry! Accuracy and repeatability are within 0.6% of the claimed tolerance of NIST traceable polystyrene latex standards used for calibration. The LA-930 ensures repeatable particle size measurements over a wide range of particle concentrations. This capability is important for samples that may vary in concentration, such as CMP slurries, pigments and pharmaceutical products, as well as eliminating a possible source of error in routine QC analyses. The LA-930 is built to be stable, reliable and rugged, allowing installations in areas previously not considered for analytical equipment. The FDA has mandated that 21 CFR Part 11 compliant systems be utilized in the pharmaceutical industry where electronic records are generated. LA-930 software includes a flexible security function, allowing configuration for different levels of users and specific function protection. Method transfer for particle sizing is of key importance and relies on the correct design of standard operating procedures (SOP's) to help eliminate user and laboratory variability. SOP's can be launched with a button, making the entire sample analysis procedure a one-click operation Wider distribution standards has been introduced to the LA-930 validation. 4 Sample Handling Systems Options Of equal importance to the sample measurement is the method by which the sample is presented to the measurement zone. The LA-930 sample handling systems suspend, disperse, and transport the materials in a consistent, efficient, reproducible manner, while offering the automation and usability features that allow for reproducible method transfer and easy operation. Adding automation accessories to the LA-930 provides all the advantages of continuous, no-stop, unattended operation. These include reduced labor costs, elimination of human error, and exceptionally reliable, repeatable measurements. More frequent checks on production runs or a greater number of variables in a research project can be tested in a shorter period of time. Also, measurement can easily take place during non-peak hours, increasing system availability and productivity. As a result, users report that the system often pays for itself in three to six months. The standard fluid circulation system in the LA-930 includes a number of features to ease the particle analysis task. The high-output centrifugal pump can circulate even 2,000µm particles smoothly and consistently for superior repeatability. All parts of the LA-930 that contact the dispersion fluid are made of chemical-resistant, rustproof materials such as stainless steel, Teflon, and glass, making the LA-930 ideal for use even with organic solvents. The LA-930 includes a powerful, 130-watt, in-line ultrasonic probe to quickly and fully disperse agglomerates, eliminating the need for external sample preparation. The AutoFill pump automates dispersant filling, dilution, and rinsing to automate almost all aspects of the particle analysis task. The built-in automation and high capabilities allow almost any sample analysis procedure to be performed in the instrument, increasing sample throughput and improving reproducibility. In addition, these methods can be transferred to other sites without concern for operator-induced variability. For powdered materials, the PowderJet II Dry Feeder is an alternative sample feeding device providing a simple yet effective method of analyzing both free-flowing and cohesive dry powders. The design of the PowderJet II optimizes the sample dispersion process. In the PowderJet, the sample is fed from a speedcontrolled vibratory feeder directly downward into the top of the sample cell assembly, moving just a few inches in free fall to the dispersion nozzle. This approach prevents powder build-up, clogging and the inconsistent feed rate normally experienced in systems that use tubing to transport powder horizontally and upward to the sensing zones. As a result, unlike with horizontal or vertical feed tubes, there are no problems with clogging during measurement and no need for cleaning between samples. Jet nozzle The SlurrySampler, is a robotic-arm sampling system that can accommodate up to 60 samples, depending on container size. When prompted by the software, the robotic arm moves to the correct position, mixes the sample, withdraws an aliquot, and adds it to the sampling chamber. The AutoSampler is a 24-position carousel that fits on top of the main analyzer unit. As each sample is required for analysis, the carousel advances, drops the sample into the sample chamber, fluid jets rinse the sample cup, and the instrument carries out the sample analysis. It also shortens the time required for measurement considerably, since no sample preparation is required.
