3 Foreword Foreword In addition to energy efficiency and quality, safety and security have become important selling points because interest in sustainable quality products has been steadily increasing. Building owners rightly demand that building components are energy efficient and suitable for use i.e. that they function reliably and durably for many years. This is a good thing because it strengthens the position of quality manufacturers, and protects against cheap bargain offers. But quality must be recognisable; assured characteristics must be maintained over the long term. When quality assurance is promised, users expect the product to be service/maintenancefriendly, they expect competent advice, straightforward operation (comfort) and correct installation to RAL standards. Likewise, in the context of increasing crime rates, climate change, financial crises and migration, safety and security have become important criteria, which include the aspects of burglar resistance as well as reliability of use, fire safety and smoke control, as well as disaster protection. But what does this mean in detail; how can one use these aspects for advice and sales, and explain the advantages to the building owner? This is the focus of the Special Show Success with safety/ security + quality at the international leading Fensterbau Frontale trade fair in Nuremberg, which is attended by manufacturers, dealers, installation companies and also architects and designers. Supported by NürnbergMesse, the Association of Glass, Window and Facade Manufacturers (GFF) and the other exhibitors, this Show demonstrates how the quality and safety/security of building components can be successfully designed, implemented and tested. In activity zones, visitors to the exhibition can experience live which defects lead directly to claims, how RAL installation with modern technology functions and how burglar resistance can be improved. Window experts can search the Fehlerkrimi detective story for typical manufacturing and installation mistakes and win attractive prizes. Naturally, experts from the ift Rosenheim, the GFF, the Bavarian LKA (State Office of Criminal Investigation), and other exhibitors, will be available to our visitors to share their experience and competence. Quality products, customer service and product guarantees are avenues towards meeting this challenge. Building owners can rightly expect building components to be energy efficient and suitable for use i.e. that they function reliably and durably over a long period of time. In addition to energy efficiency, safety, security, quality and comfort have become important decision criteria for purchasing windows. Safety and security include burglar resistance, safety in use and fire resistance. The term quality includes suitability for use, workmanship, quality of finish, application-oriented design and specification, and installation. It also includes effective internal and external quality control. The things that can happen when third-party control is missing have just become evident in an impressive way in the automotive industry. There is also evidence in the media, with daily reports on the financial, social and psychological effects of break-ins. The Cologne Study [2] shows that 80% of break-ins into detached houses are made via ground-level terrace/balcony doors and windows, and 75% of the break-ins are made by simply prising open doors and windows. For this reason, it is recommended to use tested and certified burglar resistant windows and doors in the design of new buildings in order to ensure reliable burglar resistance. The security level/ resistance class (RC) essentially depends on the potential risk to people and the value of the assets to be protected. In most cases, resistance class RC 2 is adequate for private individuals. For the purpose of retrofit hardware, a large selection of tested and certified hardware to DIN Part 1 and Part 2 is available on the market Design, standard requirements and evidence EIt is not possible to provide 100% security / protection against break-ins, therefore the term used is burglar resistance. 10 Technical Article Safety, security and quality mes increasingly nervous as time passes and then abandons the break-in. For this reason, burglar resistance starts with the design of the building. Areas that are shielded from view (cellar entrances, terraces, doors in recesses etc.) are burglars favourite places, and should be avoided already at the design stage or should be particularly well protected. The burglar resistance of windows and external pedestrian doorsets is covered by clause 4.23 of product standard EN which, for testing and grouping into resistance classes, refers to the standard series EN 1627 to EN 1630, which also cover curtain wall facades and grille elements, but not industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates, which are covered by EN The system of preventing break-ins works like a chain which is always only as good as its weakest link from the applied force to the hardware. DIN EN 1627 provides options for classification for burglar resistant windows, doors, roller shutters and other shutters. The different resistance classes correspond to a certain intruder behaviour expected in accordance with the standards, and a resistance period when certain tools are used. 1.2 Use of safety/security glass Depending on the resistance class aimed for, EN 1627 stipulates details relating to the glazing, which are covered by EN 356. EN 1627 provides for a sub-division of resistance class RC 2 into two different classes. The added letter N in resistance classes RC 1 N and RC 2 N stands for national requirement. In Germany, it is possible to use normal glass without attack-resistant properties as part of class RC 2 N, which provides basic protection against the use of leverage tools but does nothing to protect against break-in via the glass. A positive side effect of safety / security glass is achieved when the glass (e.g. class P4 A) is installed on the inside, because the risk of injury to children due to glass breakage is reduced and, for the intruder, is increased on the outside. Tab. 3 Glazing requirements for the trade and at testing (Classification of Security glazing according to DIN EN 356, typical glassconfiguration and assignment to resistance classes according to DIN 52290) Infill panels (glass and solid panels) can be secured as required on the attack side by using screw-fastened metal profiles, by bonding the panes to the glazing rebate and by screw-fastening the glazing beads. In these details it is important to ensure that the ventilation of the glazing rebate is fully retained. 1.3 Mechanical burglar resistance retrofit Building owners intending to replace existing windows in order to improve thermal insulation can benefit at the same time from improved burglar resistance devices, so that a lucrative market has developed from the improvement of the burglar resistance of existing buildings to the advantage of installers, manufacturers of retrofit hardware and assembly companies. The requirements and test methods for retrofit products for doors and windows are covered by DIN Mechanical security devices. Retrofit products must have the benefit of tests and certificates in accordance with DIN and 2. Proof must be provided that the components have been installed properly in order to attract grant funding, for example from the KfW bank. DIN covers retrofit products such as additional locks, bolts or locking bars. These Page 6 of 34 ift Rosenheim 2016 Special Show "Success with Security + Quality!"

11 Safety, security and quality Technical Article devices should at least be fitted at the handle and hinge sides. In addition, at least one of the security devices should be lockable if laminated safety glass has not been used. Simple screw-on security devices are not very popular for aesthetical and practical reasons; an aesthetically more pleasing solution can be found in burglar resistant tilt/ turn fittings or hinge bolts, which are covered by Part 2 of the standard (retrofit products for doors and windows fitted to the rebate). However, it is important to note that the design of upgrades and the replacement of existing fittings with burglar resistant retrofit hardware requires sufficient specialist knowledge, experience and skill, which are normally absent in untrained installers. 1.4 Construction principles Fig. 3 Test arrangement for retrofit products installed in the rebate in accordance with DIN ; here with mushroom pin and security catch A general rule in the design of burglar resistant components is that the entire security chain must be closed. That means that, from the fastening to the wall, to the material and the design of the rebate, a suitable selection of locks and fasteners, as well as hardware, through to the glazing installed, every detail has to fulfil the requirements for burglar resistance. Current test results demonstrate that requirements relating to security, conceptual design and energy conservation can all be complied with together. Burglar resistant windows fitted with attack resistant glazing require bigger profile sections owing to the thicker glass. The hardware industry offers fittings for various resistance classes. The installation instructions provided by hardware manufacturers specify details for screw fixing and installation. Another important aspect is the installation and use of lockable window handles in order to prevent casements being opened after the glass has been broken by an intruder. 1.5 Quality and certification of products and installation companies Fig. 4 Components of the security chain of a burglar resistant window The manufacture and production of burglar resistant windows, doors and other shutters requires extensive expert knowledge. This applies to the supplier of building components (hardware, window profiles and glass) through to the manufacturer and the installation company. For this reason, manufacturers of highquality products avail themselves of the advantages provided by certification and monitoring by an authorised body. However, the installer only needs to provide evidence of qualification once. Ongoing control is not provided by this procedure. Specialist companies with nationwide certification are monitored annually by a neutral external monitoring agency. This involves an examination and assessment of retrofit installations on site for correct implementation. This is the significant difference between a certified and noncertified specialist company (installation company). The procedure ensures the continuing and reliable qualification of the company, and the quality of the final installation. The ift Rosenheim also lists and recommends the monitored companies on its website on the information page for building owners, consumers and architects. Certified products, manufacturers and installation companies are included in the manufacturer lists kept by the German State crime departments (KPK lists), which provide free advice to designers and building owners and make reference to the manufacturers and installers from the KPK lists. The function of burglar resistant windows and any retrofit installations depends largely on the specialist knowledge of the contracted company. For this reason, the advisory police departments recommend that the installation be carried out by qualified and certified companies. Currently there are two qualification systems on the market. At the level of the German Federal States (construction legislation is a State matter) the Errichterverfahren Mechanik (mechanical installer procedure) is used, for In commercial properties and public buildings, fire safety in buildings is one of the most important requirements which therefore must be systematically checked and monitored. In fire safety of buildings, it is vital to ensure that the inner values of the construction including all details (quality of seals, installation, fastening etc.) comply with the requirements; therefore these cannot easily be replaced without further testing. With the introduction of the product standard EN by 1 September 2016, Europe-wide CE marking will be possible and the national regulations for approval will no longer apply. For this reason, the experience and competence of the notified product certification body (NPC) are of special importance. 2.1 Fire resistance and smoke control elements the road towards CE marking Fig. 7 The quality mark of companies specialising in mechanical security devices for buildings The new product standard EN Pedestrian doorsets, industrial, commercial, garage doors and openable windows with fire resistance and/or smoke control characteristics will come into force on 1 September 2016 with a three-year co-existence phase. 13 Safety, security and quality Technical Article properties. During the co-existence phase of EN it is permissible to market products with the CE mark or with a national identification mark. For architects, manufacturers and assemblers this means that, as of September 2016, the tender specification, design and manufacture can be carried out in accordance with EN and that, as of September 2019, these processes must be carried out in accordance with the standard The European standards involve new designations for fire resistant and smoke control door and shutter assemblies (see Table 4) and include mandatory testing and classification of the following mandatory properties: 1. Resistance to fire to Clause 4.1 (e.g. EI2 30) 2. Smoke control to Clause 4.2 (e.g. S200) 3. Ability to release to Clause 4.3 ( released ) 4. Self-closing to Clause 4.4 (C) 5. Durability of the ability to release to Clause ( maintaining release) 6. Durability of self-closing against degradation to Clause (cycling testing with statement of class in accordance with the test cycles carried out, e.g. 5) 7. Durability of self-closing against ageing (corrosion) ( achieved ) The designation El 2 30-C5-S a refers to a room-enclosing (E) fire resistant doorset or shutter with very frequent operation (C5), a limitation of the temperature increase to 180 C (I2), a resistance period of 30 minutes (30) and smoke control closure at ambient temperature (S a ). Up to now, the designation for single fire resistant doors was simply T30-1-door, and for double fire doors, T30-2-door. 2.2 Manufacturer and system provider tasks The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) lists five different systems for the assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP). For fire resistant and smoke control assemblies, EN specifies System 1. In all systems, factory production control (FPC) is the manufacturer s duty; however, in System 1, this must be monitored by a notified product certification body (NPC) accredited to EN The NPC is responsible for selecting test specimens and samples, for stating performance characteristics (type testing) and for issuing the certificate of constancy of performance as a verification document under construction law. This means that the NPC plays a key role in System 1 for achieving CE marking. Table ZA 3 in EN describes the allocation of tasks between the manufacturer and the NPC. 2.3 Declaration of Performance (DoP) and CE mark It is the manufacturer s responsibility to produce the declaration of performance and carry out the CE marking on the basis of the certificate of constancy of performance issued by the NPC. The declaration of performance is subdivided into the information required by the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), which is identical for all construction products (name of manufacturer, product etc.), and the essential characteristics (technical parameters) in accordance with Appendix ZA of the product standard. The declaration of performance must be produced in the language required in the country of use, and must be retained for ten years. The information in accordance with EN must be supplemented by additional information when these products are also subject to other product standards, such as use as an external door (EN ), internal door (currently pren ), automatic door (EN 16361) or industrial, commercial and garage door and gate (EN ). 3 Quality suitability for use Fig. 8 Fire resistant doorsets and glazing can save lives and therefore have to be carefully checked and monitored. Quality requires a detailed description and definition in order to be able to distinguish good from bad. The performance characteristics of construction products are described in the European product standards, which are structured in accordance with the performance principle (EN Windows/external doors, EN Curtain Walling and EN Industrial, commercial and garage ift Rosenheim 2016 Special Show "Success with Security + Quality!" The CE mark obligates the manufacturer only to declare certain characteristics. Ensuring that these characteristics established for a specimen window are also achieved by a normally produced serial window is the responsibility of the manufacturer. For this reason, the CE mark is not a quality mark. Windows, doors and facades/curtain walling will be of good quality, suitable for use, and will function well when the different components function together as a system and are adapted to the intended use. This requires a holistic approach to the construction and monitoring of building components as well as of the associated profiles, glazing and hardware. Durability is an important quality characteristic of good suitability for use and long service life. 3.1 Tested and monitored quality provides assurance to manufacturers and buyers It is well known that a recommendation from satisfied customers helps sales, but potential window buyers are becoming ever more discerning, obtain information from the internet and ask for technical parameters and quality cha- Page 10 of 34 ift Rosenheim 2016 Special Show "Success with Security + Quality!"

This is where quality marks are useful, for example the RAL quality mark or certification by the ift Rosenheim. The ift quality label is based on clearly defined criteria and tests, regular third-party monitoring and transparent communication of assessment criteria, and technical parameters on the ift website. In this way, competence and neutrality are the basis of the trust of building owners, architects and authorities. The voluntary quality monitoring by the ift Rosenheim offers manufacturers a high degree of assurance, because the procedures are also adequate for the conformity procedures of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and are performed by an accredited product certification body approved under construction law. That is particularly important when safety-relevant products, such as fire resistant and smoke control elements or escape doors are manufactured or installed. 3.2 Graded quality levels for industry and craftbased enterprises In order to ensure that these advantages also benefit small and medium-sized window manufacturers, the ift Rosenheim has together with the RAL Quality Association for Windows and External Doors developed a graded model offering the different levels of Standard, Quality and the RAL Quality Mark. All three levels have in common that the external monitoring is not just a proforma test, but involves ift experts regularly visiting the companies for an assessment and who are available to answer questions on technology, standards and quality management. Certified manufacturers are listed on the ift Rosenheim website and buyers of windows can quickly find out product information via QR Code. At the ift Standard level, the focus is on correct and standard-conforming production of the declaration of performance, the CE mark, the implementation of the factory production control (FPC) stipulated under construction ift Rosenheim 2016 Special Show "Success with Security + Quality!" Put simply, the company will receive support in implementing the product standard and sample forms to assist with compliance with CPR, including an annual update. This means that the tedious paperwork is dealt with efficiently and in compliance with the standard; furthermore, it involves clear guidance as to how to make proper use of the evidence provided by system providers and suppliers. The ift Quality level builds on the Standard level, but focuses on product quality. Therefore the quality label is suitable for companies that want to position themselves on account of quality and to ensure and monitor relevant quality characteristics. This includes also the quality of components used (glass, hardware etc.). Important criteria of quality and suitability for use are the durability test, with 15,000 opening and closing cycles, and the mechanical strength test. Regular testing of air permeability and watertightness as part of the FPC in order to fulfil the ift Quality criteria demonstrates the competence of the manufacturer to produce a quality window from good components. This can be carried out at an in-house test rig, at the suppliers or system providers, or at the ift Rosenheim. It follows that the ift Quality label is comparable to the previous ift certified label on the basis of the Windows and External Doors certification program (QM 320). The RAL Quality Mark is based on the ift Quality level and the defined technical criteria but also includes additional requirements such as the rebate hindrance test and reveal test, as well as monitoring of the installation. The use of the RAL Quality Mark, which is well known in Germany, requires membership of the RAL-Gütegemeinschaft Fenster und Türen e.v. The reason is that the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that the manufactured products achieve the characteristics values determined during initial type testing. Furthermore, it is more and more common that claims are made and payments reduced where documents are missing. The more complex standards and products become, the more difficult it is to cope with the increasing deluge of regulations and verifications. An important role is played by system providers and suppliers of hardware, glass, sealants, weather strips, corner connectors and installation systems, since they often hold the required test certificates. To use these documents for the classification and CE marking requires experience and competence. This applies in particular when test certificates are used in the context of the cascaded system. The ift Rosenheim has worked on simplifying these documentation duties and has developed IT solutions such as recommendations for use, the CE Generator and easy-to-use forms and checklists. How to use these tools and other advice can be obtained as part of the certification process. This means that companies have more time to concentrate on their core business, i.e. selling, manufacturing and installing. 4 Quality quality of workmanship and defects analysis Building components have to fulfil their practical and aesthetic functions under extreme conditions for many decades. The selection of the right windows, the analysis of the correlation of building physics and structural requirements in the building, including the appropriate design and the correct execution of important details and the installation, are important prerequisites for the long, problem-free service life of building components. Small causes can often have big effects on the durability and suitability for use of a component that is evidenced by the results of third-party control and expert reports that uncover typical errors during manufacture and installation. In most cases, defects are caused by a combination of inadequate design, the lack of specialist knowledge, time and cost pressure and the lack of information in the text of specifications and tenders. 4.1 Errors in production Manufacturers of PVC and metal windows usually have the benefit of tried-and-tested window, door and facade systems from what are known as system providers. These not only supply the profiles, seals and fittings, but also the necessary documentary evidence and guidelines for the use and assembly of the systems, which ensures that the tested suitability for use and quality are achieved. In combination with professional quality assurance and factory production control, it is possible to implement a zero error strategy. Part of this strategy involves the near daily use of professional test instruments and methods. The test of the air permeability and watertightness has proved to be very effective, since this reveals numerous potential errors in workmanship and fabrication. 4.2 Errors in the refurbishment of existing buildings A special challenge for design and installation is presented by the replacement of windows in refurbishments. New windows often change the balance between external wall, heating system, windows and users. When windows are replaced without proper design and ventilation considerations, the resulting changes in window ventilation and any defects in the installation can often lead to significant defects or damage. 19 Safety, security and quality Technical Article Private building owners in particular are keenly interested in avoiding extensive construction work and any greater damage when replacing windows. Advertising slogans such as replacement windows without dirt reinforce this kind of expectation. However, in practice it is evident that this requirement can hardly ever be satisfied in existing buildings without additional construction work owing to the materials used, the additional elements such as window sills and roller shutters, and the installation details. Many building owners omit to commission or carry out necessary measures for avoiding thermal bridges, for implementing a ventilation concept etc. This means that the refurbishment remains incomplete and prone to attract condensation and mould problems. The objective of significant energy conservation without condensation and mould problems can therefore only be achieved with a comprehensive refurbishment concept. Fig. 16 Testing the air permeability and watertightness reveals a range of different errors in workmanship and fabrication and is therefore ideal as a finalproduction control procedure insufficient training and further education of members of staff regarding new methods and materials, and subcontracting to insufficiently qualified companies; no installation standards observed, instead incomplete development of building-specific solutions; time and cost pressure during the detailed design, ordering and execution of the project; improvisation of details on the construction site. 5 Quality intended use, design and recommendations for use Designing and constructing buildings and windows is becoming increasingly complex. The requirements for windows and doors are laid down in various standards, in construction law, building codes, in special construction regulations, acts, workplace guidelines and other documents. The quality and performance of building components largely depends on the intended use; it is not possible to produce one type of window for all purposes. In the design, specification, manufacture and installation of windows and doors, it is necessary to prioritise and determine the over 20 properties specified in product standard EN , and other technical characteristics. Because there is a big difference between windows used in a private home, an office building or a school. It is therefore not surprising that there is uncertainty regarding the design, specification and manufacture of the right windows. In view of the fact that the product standard does not give any information in this respect, an inappropriate description invariably leads to the building components being inadequate in service. In addition, there are often design faults as well as defects in production and installation. A new series of ift Guidelines gives recommendations for different types of uses, providing support for design and specification. 5.1 Windows in schools and buildings for older people Fig. 17 The effect of new, airtight windows on buildings where no other refurbishment work has been carried out The requirements and safety objectives relating to windows in schools can be found in a number of different standards, special construction regulations, acts, workplace guidelines and in the details of the statutory health ift Rosenheim 2016 Special Show "Success with Security + Quality!" Unfortunately, this disparate information rarely helps the designer with the specification and definition of properties because of the absence of reference to the performance classes defined in product standard EN This is required however for producing a factually correct technical description and specification that clearly informs the manufacturer which windows have to be supplied. The application-related ift Guideline FE-16/1 Recommendation for the use of windows in schools includes recommendations for the required quality of the windows to be used and information on the classification in accordance with the product standards. Of typical importance are the demanding mechanical loads, the need for extensive ventilation and the use of daylight in combination with glare and solar protection. For this reason the requirements have to refer not only to technical characteristics, but also to other aspects. These include the dimensions and sub-division of windows, the types of opening, designs and safety devices, as well as information on servicing and maintenance that can be used to improve the function, durability and safety. Nevertheless, regular checks, servicing and maintenance is mandatory in order to prevent serious impairment of function and hazards. For this purpose, instructions to the local caretaker are an important element. Most people want to continue leading a self-determined life when they are older and wish for a suitable living space. In this context, windows and doors are very important because they allow sun, air and noise to enter the room, which is particularly important for persons who spend much time indoors. Windows in care institutions for the elderly have to comply mainly with the three guiding principles of Getting there Getting in Managing. Many aspects of these guiding principles are defined during the conceptual and detailed design of the windows. 22 Technical Article Safety, security and quality energy conservation and comfort; this also applies to the installation technology. As the last link in the quality chain, the installation determines whether the assured performance characteristics of the building component are fulfilled. For this reason, the qualification of the installation company is very important, irrespective of whether the installation is commissioned by the manufacturer or the seller. In consequence, the separation of the manufacture and installation of windows has spawned competent specialised installation companies that are capable of installing windows in a professional manner. These are listed on the ift website. Fig. 20 Recommended sub-division and opening method of windows in care institutions residents may not have much strength in hands and arms; persons may have restricted mobility; persons may be visually impaired; views to the outside should be available from a sitting position; mentally impaired perception/safety consciousness of users; more daylight required and higher indoor temperatures. These criteria lead to typical architectural designs with straightforward details and small casement formats. It makes sense to fit such windows with motorised drives and vents in order to ensure ease of operation, the supply of fresh air and limited indoor humidity. 6 Quality installation Window and door technology has steadily improved in order to meet more demanding requirements regarding In particular, this applies to building components with requirements for smoke control and fire resistance, burglar resistance or for accessibility/barrier-free detailing. Where windows are installed as part of a refurbishment project, there is often no designer involved and it is expected that the manufacturer, installation company or tradesman selects the sealing and fixing systems on the basis of sample details in a professional manner, and adjusts them to the situation at the property. 6.1 Planning the installation Good installation starts with professional planning, including the design of the installation details that are suitable for the window, the dimensions and the situation at the building. This includes the selection of suitable and tested fastening and sealing systems and their professional application. The installation guideline includes the technical details and instructions. Competent installation companies are able to compare these sample details with the situation on site and to devise adaptations that work structurally and from the point of view of building physics. In particular this applies to energy-efficient external walls and to accessible, barrier-free front, terrace and balcony doors. 23 Safety, security and quality Technical Article The design for the replacement of windows in existing buildings should therefore take the following aspects into account: re-assessment of the balance in terms of building physics, because window replacement will lead to a change in the air permeability and surface temperatures of the external wall (user-independent ventilation, insulation of reveals, layout of radiators etc.); the thermal insulation standard of the building envelope frequently does not meet contemporary requirements (requirement for improving thermal bridge problems thermal insulation of reveals at U AW > 1.0 W/(m²K)); if possible, the architectural appearance (window sills, reveals, roller shutters) is to be retained unchanged (historic buildings, cost, soiling); design and organisation of use and accessibility (may require additional protection measures); solar screening may be required when replacing existing windows with larger windows. 6.2 Fastening These days, windows can no longer be fastened on the basis of we have always done it this way, i.e. with no design. This is because the weight of glazing and window casements has increased significantly; in addition windows are larger, have a horizontal format, the highly insulating external walls have less structural strength and installation takes place in the thermal insulation zone. For this reason, Fig 22 the traditional fastening rules (layout of support blocks, observing fastening and corner distances) may often no longer be adequate. The increasing number of defects and claims indicates that there is a need for action. A differentiated approach is necessary so that a propertyspecific structural design does not have to be carried out in the context of the workshop and installation design of each installation project. Chapter 5 of the installation guideline therefore defines three application cases based on technical details and building code requirements. This simplifies the application and establishes a high degree of legal compliance. The standard fastening method is based on fastening the element on all sides. Special case 2 is based on legal boundary conditions relating to the building code and the need for documentary evidence (fastening of fall prevention windows, fire safety requirements or the installation of burglar resistant units). (Image: Finstral installation instructions) Building components in the building envelope are exposed to moisture from outside as well as inside. While the exposure to the weather from the outside is readily acknowledged, the effect of the humidity on the inside is often not taken into account (condensate mould formation). The internal and external joints between the component and the building fabric have to fulfil many functions and must be correctly sealed. Different joint details between component and wall are used depending on the exterior wall system and the installation detail. The correct sealing system must be selected for each specific property depending on the expected exposure resulting from the building location, the position of the element, the window design, the function and the joint details; the following aspects have to be taken into account: 1. movement/deformation to be expected (deflection of floor, dimensional hanges due to temperature or humidity); 2. quality of the joint edges with the adjoining materials; 3. joint geometry; 4. existing construction tolerances; 5. design considerations (in the case of visible joints). ift Rosenheim 2016 Special Show "Success with Security + Quality!" 24 Technical Article Safety, security and quality 6.4 Quality control and certification Regular monitoring of the installation process is helpful when one wants to guarantee good installation quality of windows and doors in the long term. In view of this, the ift Rosenheim has developed the Certification programme for the installation of windows, external doors and curtain walls (QM 352). In the context of the certification, the qualification of the person responsible for the installation, the installers and subcontractors are checked and training certificates must not be older than 2 years. In addition, the external monitoring includes a check of the site log books and of the joint details carried out on site, in particular the compliance of the built details with the checked drawings as well as compliance with property-specific requirements. In the case of deviations or complaints, the cause must be established and eliminated immediately. The certification body will decide whether special checks are necessary or whether the certificate is withdrawn. Furthermore, inhouse monitoring is required, which must be arranged by the person who is responsible for ensuring correct installation, checks and qualification, and the training of operatives and subcontractors. In the RAL Quality Association the assessment of the installation records is also integrated into the annual external monitoring process. However, on-going monitoring of completed installations on site is not part of the programme. The ift Rosenheim supports installation companies by offering training for installers as well as certification which includes regular external monitoring. These companies are listed on the ift website and are recommended to building owners. An additional recommendation via the advisory office of the criminal investigation department (KPK list) is possible following additional qualification for the installation of burglar-resistant components. 7 Conclusion Everybody wants safety, security and quality. However, both depend to a large degree on personal expectations and the intended use, and can therefore not be reflected Fig. 25 Sign of ift-certified installation company + RAL installation logo by a CE mark or the declaration of performance. In addition, the expectations and the understanding of window purchasers regarding quality are also affected by current developments such as climate change and security consciousness. This makes it clear that quality is not something that is always straightforward and unchanging. For this reason it is difficult to exactly describe this diffuse property with the help of technical classes, requirements and performance indicators. Therefore the essential key to success is a correct and specific combination of customer requirements, the requirements of the property and the technical characteristics of the building component. This requires competence, experience and sustainable and systematic commitment to quality.
