In case of fire, inform the Fire Brigade without delay and fight the fire with a fire extinguisher until the Fire Brigade arrives. Always keep the access to emergency showers, eye showers and emergency exits clear. Always wear appropriate safety clothing in laboratories. In case of an accident with electrical power, immediately operate the emergency stop button. Only perform hazardous tasks on your own when another person can provide first-aid in an emergency. Only use items of equipment that have been tested and that are in correct working order. Have any defects rectified without delay and inform your supervisor. Only leave the workplace if continuous supervision of your work is not necessary or if another person takes over supervision. Only work outside normal working hours with suitable precautionary measures and if it is not possible to perform the work at another time. Store hazardous materials so that they do not create a hazard to health or the environment. In general observe the following directives, specification and regulations: Richtlinien für Laboratorien der Berufsgenossenschaften (Guidelines for Laboratories) (BGR 120) Health and safety regulations Allgemeine Vorschriften (Annex 1 of the Accident Prevention Regulations "General Rules") (BGV A1) Gesundheitsdienst (Health service) (BGV C8) Umgang mit krebserregenden Gefahrstoffen (Handling carcinogenic hazardous materials) (VBG 113) Gefahrstoffverordnung (Hazardous Materials Regulations) Arbeitsstättenverordnung (Workplaces Ordinance) Legal regulations on waste 2

Safety Warning instructions used in this operating instruction In this section warnings about hazards are provided in the form of warning instructions. The nature of the hazard and the hazard category are identified by a symbol and a signal word. It is imperative that the information on how to avoid the hazard is observed. The following hazard categories are used in this document as required. DANGER! identifies hazards to the health. WARNING! is used with all warning instructions that could result in minor injuries or damage if they are not observed. CAUTION! is used with all warning instructions that could result in damage if they are not observed. SIGNAL WORD Nature and source of the hazard Possible consequence of failure to observe Information on how to avoid the hazard Correct use Special application fume cupboards make it possible to work with high thermal loads in the workspace. Condensing hazardous materials are safely removed. The design of the special application fume cupboards prevents hazardous concentrations and deposits of harmful substances that are released in the workspace. Special application fume cupboards are particularly suitable for open uncontained decomposition work in accordance with DIN Part 2. Provided the operating conditions (DIN EN 14175, Part 2) are observed, primary explosion protection in the context of the Explosionsschutz-Richtlinien (EX-RL) (Explosion protection guidelines) is adequately addressed. The following materials are not permitted in special application fume cupboards: Radioactive substances Microorganisms Genotype modified substances 3

Safety Work performed by WALDNER Installation and modification of WALDNER laboratory furniture is only allowed to be performed by WALDNER service personnel or authorised personnel. Maintenance on WALDNER laboratory furniture are only allowed to be performed by appropriately qualified personnel or WALDNER service personnel. Maintenance work must be performed regularly every 12 months. The spare parts required must be recorded in a log. Compliance with standards During the planning, manufacture and the installation of the WALDNER laboratory furniture product range, the applicable specifications such as EN standards, DIN, DVGW, GS marking, CE marking, VDE, BGV and VDI regulations and other official specifications and conditions in the Standards and technical rules section are taken into account. 4

Description Description Layout of a special application fume cupboard Components of a special application fume cupboard Sash handle Sash Function display FAZ or Airflow-Controller AC Fascia panel Extract air collection duct Rear panel Work surface in the workspace Service Rail with several multiple service terminals For protection against deposits, the extract air collection duct can be equipped with sprinkling as an option. A drip basin can be fitted to the rear panel in the workspace as an option. 5

Description Types and designs The following information can be found on the identity label fitted to the special application fume cupboard: Type or design of the fume cupboard Width of the fume cupboard in mm Depth of the fume cupboard in mm Working height in mm Extract air volume in m 3 /h Year of manufacture The identity type e.g. AA 1200x , stands for a special application fume cupboard with a width of 1200 mm, a depth of 900 mm and a working height of 900 mm. As an alternative to the extract air collection duct, a fumescrubber can be incorporated over the workspace. Special application fume cupboard with fume-scrubber Special application fume cupboard Fume-scrubber 6

Description Functional description Special application fume cupboards are permanently installed bench-mounted fume cupboards that are connected to a fume extraction system through an extract air collection duct or through a fume-scrubber. A partial vacuum is produced in the enclosed workspace by the extraction. Air is drawn in via a gap below the sash. Gases, fumes, aerosols and dust in the workspace are mixed with the air and extracted. Sprinkling (optional) After working with perchloric acid, the deposits in the extract air collection duct must be removed with the ventilation switched off. For this purpose the inside of the extract air collection duct is sprinkled with water. The water pressure is 2.5 bar. The water flowing out of the duct is feed to the drain system. The sprinkling only provides protection against deposits in the extract air collection duct and does represent an alternative to the fume-scrubber. Fume-scrubber The air extracted from the workspace is cleaned via the fume-scrubber. In the fume-scrubber water, is finely sprayed and mixed with the air drawn in. In this way aggressive and toxic gases (e.g. perchloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc.) are absorbed from the air and remain bound in the water. Fume-scrubber Viewing panel Control Extract air spigot Gas intake opening 7

Description The level and quality of the the scrubbing water is monitored. The water is replaced automatically as necessary. After extended periods, the water can also be replaced manually. The switch for switching on and off the fumescrubber and for manually replacing the scrubbing water is on a multiple service terminal in the service rail. Drip basin (optional) Sash A drip basin is fitted to the rear panel in the workspace. Condensation forming on the top baffle is fed from the condensation groove to the basin. The basin is connected to a separate drain system. The top baffles can be removed for cleaning, see page 15. The workspace is accessible by using the sash, which moves vertically to open. The sash allows access to the workspace and protects the operator. A limiting device prevents the sash from being opened beyond the limits of the operational sash opening. Before the sash can be opened further, a one-hand release on the sash handle must be operated. A visual and an acoustic alarm on the special application fume cupboard indicate when the sash is opened beyond the largest operational sash opening. 8

Description An anti-skid device prevents the sash dropping if the suspension mechanism fails. A collecting groove on the inside of the sash handle collects splinters and splashes and prevents splashes of liquid escaping from the workspace to the outside. Function display FAZ The minimum extract air volume is monitored by a sensor. If the flow rate drops below the minimum, a visual indication is provided by a flashing lamp on the function display FAZ and an acoustic indication is provided with an alarm. The alarm can be deactivated by pressing a switch button. Function display FAZ Lamp with switch button for alarm Green indicator with switch button for monitoring function Airflow-Controller AC The Airflow-Controller AC is fitted as an alternative to the function display FAZ. In addition to the functions on the function display FAZ, the extract air volume can be manually increased and reduced on the Airflow-Controller AC. Fluctuations in the ventilation system are compensated. In the simplest case the extract air volume is set to a constant value. As an option the extract air volume can be controlled by sash position. This control can be either in stages or continuously variably between the minimum and the maximum extract air volume. 9

Description A flashing lamp on the Airflow-Controller AC will provide a visual indication and a alarm gives an acoustic indication if control of the extract air volume is not possible. The alarm can be deactivated by pressing a switch button. Airflow-Controller AC Lamp with switch button for alarm Yellow lamp with switch button for max. extract air volume Yellow lamp with switch button for min. extract air volume Green indicator with switch button for regulation function The buttons at the Airflow-Controller AC can also be individually assigned. Lighting Multiple service terminal The workspace is illuminated. The lighting is designed so that it does not dazzle and can be switched on and off from the outside. The multiple service terminals are installed in the service rail of the fume cupboard. The outlets on the rear panel in the workspace are operated from outside via valves or switches in the multiple service terminals. Combinations of fittings and valves are incorporated in water distribution terminals. Switches, sockets or fuses are integrated in an electrical module. 10
