In case of fire, inform the Fire Brigade without delay and fight the fire with a fire extinguisher until the Fire Brigade arrives. Always keep the access to emergency showers, eye showers and emergency exits clear. Always wear appropriate safety clothing in laboratories. In case of an accident with electrical power, immediately operate the emergency stop button. Only perform hazardous tasks on your own when another person can provide first-aid in an emergency. Only use items of equipment that have been tested and that are in correct working order. Have any defects rectified without delay and inform your supervisor. Only leave the workplace if continuous supervision of your work is not necessary or if another person takes over supervision. Only work outside normal working hours with suitable precautionary measures and if it is not possible to perform the work at another time. Store hazardous materials so that they do not create a hazard to health or the environment. In general observe the following directives, specification and regulations: Richtlinien für Laboratorien der Berufsgenossenschaften (Guidelines for Laboratories) (BGR 120) Health and safety regulations Allgemeine Vorschriften (Annex 1 of the Accident Prevention Regulations "General Rules") (BGV A1) Gesundheitsdienst (Health service) (BGV C8) Umgang mit krebserregenden Gefahrstoffen (Handling carcinogenic hazardous materials) (VBG 113) Gefahrstoffverordnung (Hazardous Materials Regulations) Arbeitsstättenverordnung (Workplaces Ordinance) Legal regulations on waste 2

Safety Warning instructions used in this operating instruction In this section warnings about hazards are provided in the form of warning instructions. The nature of the hazard and the hazard category are identified by a symbol and a signal word. It is imperative that the information on how to avoid the hazard is observed. The following hazard categories are used in this document as required. DANGER! identifies hazards to the health. WARNING! is used with all warning instructions that could result in minor injuries or damage if they are not observed. CAUTION! is used with all warning instructions that could result in damage if they are not observed. SIGNAL WORD Nature and source of the hazard Possible consequence of failure to observe Information on how to avoid the hazard Correct use General purpose fume cupboards prevent gases, fumes, aerosols or dust escaping from the workspace. With the sash closed the operator is protected from splashes of hazardous substances or flying parts. Provided the operating conditions (DIN EN 14175, Part 2) are observed, primary explosion protection in the context of the Explosionsschutz-Richtlinien (EX-RL) (Explosion protection guidelines) is adequately addressed. The following substances are not approved for use in general purpose fume cupboards: Radioactive substances Microorganisms Genotype modified substances General purpose fume cupboards are not suitable for uncontained decomposition work. This also applies to general purpose fume cupboards with ceramic inner lining. 3

Safety Work performed by WALDNER Installation and modification of WALDNER laboratory furniture is only allowed to be performed by WALDNER service personnel or authorised personnel. Maintenance on WALDNER laboratory furniture are only allowed to be performed by appropriately qualified personnel or WALDNER service personnel. Maintenance work must be performed regularly every 12 months. The spare parts required must be recorded in a log. Compliance with standards During the planning, manufacture and the installation of the WALDNER laboratory furniture product range, the applicable specifications such as EN standards, DIN, DVGW, GS marking, CE marking, VDE, BGV and VDI regulations and other official specifications and conditions in the Standards and technical rules section are taken into account. 4

Description Description Layout of a general purpose fume cupboard Components of a general purpose fume cupboard (e. g. TA-900) Sash handle Sash with two cross screens Function display FAZ or Airflow-Controller AC Upper glas panel Fascia panel Extract air collection duct Baffle with service panels Work surface in the workspace Service rail with several multiple service moduls A chipboard panel can be installed instead of an upper glass panel. 5

Description Types and designs The following information can be found on the identity label fitted to the general purpose fume cupboards: Type or design of the fume cupboard Width of the fume cupboard in mm Depth of the fume cupboard in mm Working height in mm Extract air volume in m 3 /h Year of manufacture The identity type e.g. TA 1200x , stands for a bench mounted fume cupboard 1200 mm wide, 900 mm deep. The working height on this fume cupboard is 540 mm. Type TA-900 TA-540 BA N-TA SF-TA-900 SF-N-TA Design Bench mounted fume cupboard with normal working height Low level fume cupboard with normal working height Walk-in fume cupboard with working height at floor level Low ceiling bench mounted fume cupboard with reduced installation height and normal working height Secuflow -bench mounted fume cupboard with supportive flow technology and normal working height Secuflow -low ceiling bench mounted fume cupboard with supportive flow technology and normal working height On the walk-in fume-cupboard (type BA) the service modules are on a side media bearer on the left or right side of the fume cupboard. On the deep fume cupboard (type TA-540) the service modules are either on the service rail or on the media bearer. 6

Description Functional description General purpose fume cupboards are permanently installed fume cupboards connected to a fume extraction system via an extract air collection duct. A partial vacuum is produced in the enclosed workspace by the extraction. Air is drawn in through two gaps above and below the sash. Gases, fumes, aerosols and dust in the workspace are mixed with the air and extracted. Secuflow (optional) Sash The bench mounted fume cupboard SF-TA-900 and the low ceiling bench mounted fume cupboard SF-N-TA are equipped with additional supportive flow technology. The containment is optimised by a fan and slots in the front airflow profile and on the side posts. The workspace is accessible by unsing the sash, moves vertically to open. The bench mounted fume cupboards TA- 900 and SF-TA-900 have a single-piece sash. The other general purpose fume cupboards have a two-piece, synchronously operated sash. Every front sash has two glass cross screens that move in opposite directions. The cross screens make it possible to access the workspace and provide physical protection for the body. On the bench mounted fume cupboard and on the low ceiling bench mounted fume cupboard, a sash hight limiter prevents the sash opening beyond the largest operational sash opening. Before the sash can be opened further, a one-hand release installed on the sash handle must be operated. On all general purpose fume cupboards, an acoustic and visual warning is given when the sash is opened beyond the largest operational sash opening. An anti-skid device prevents the sash dropping if the suspension mechanism fails. A collecting groove on the inside of the sash handle collects splinters and splashes and prevents splashes of liquid escaping from the workspace to the outside. 7

Description Sash controller SC (optional) The sash controller SC makes it possible to close the sash with a motorised drive using a movement detector. A photo-electric barrier detects obstacles that protrude out of the workspace. If decected, the movement of the sash is stopped. Function display FAZ The minimum extract air volume is monitored by a sensor. If the flow rate drops below the minimum, a visual indication is provided with a flashing lamp on the function display FAZ and an acoustic indication is provided with an alarm. The alarm can be deactivated by pressing a switch button. Function display FAZ Lamp with switch button for alarm Green indicator with switch button for monitoring function Airflow-Controller AC The Airflow-Controller AC is fitted as an alternative to the function display FAZ. In addition to the functions on the function display FAZ, the extract air volume can be manually increased and reduced on the Airflow-Controller AC. Fluctuations in the ventilation system are compensated. In the simplest case the extract air volume is set to a constant value. As an option the extract air volume can be controlled by the sash position. Variation of the alarm in this case is either in steps or continuously between the min. and the max. extract air volume. The extract air volume is also increased when the cross screen is opened. 8

Description A flashing lamp on the Airflow-Controller AC will provide a visual indication and an alarm gives an acoustic indication if control of the extract air volume is not possible. The alarm can be deactivated by pressing a switch button. Airflow-Controller AC Lamp with switch button for alarn Yellow lamp with switch button for max. extract air volume Yellow lamp with switch button for min. extract air volume Green indicator with switch button for regulation function The buttons at the Airflow-Controller AC can also be individually assigned. Lighting The workspace is illuminated. The lighting is designed so that it does not dazzle and can be switched on and off from the outside. On an explosion or deflagration in the workspace, the lighting is raised to relieve the pressure. In this way persons near the fume cupboard are not endangered. Service panels Multiple service terminal Up to three service panels are fitted to the baffle in the workspace. Depending on the equipment fitted, service outlets for e. g. gases, water or for electrical equipment are fitted to the service panels. Several scaffold points for rods with a diameter of 13 mm are fitted to the baffle between the service panels. The multiple service terminals are fitted either in the fume cupboard service rail or in the media bearer on the left or right of the fume cupboard. The service outlets on the service panels in the workspace are operated from the outside using valves or switches on the multiple service terminals. Combinations of fittings and valves are incorporated in water distribution terminals. Switches, sockets or fuses are integrated in an electrical module. 9
