3 Explosion-proof / Flame-proof What is the Difference? Explosion proof and Flame proof mean the same thing within the ATEX environment. Phoenix equipment is engineered and certified to contain any explosion and flames resulting from a spark or failure that may occur inside one of our products. This is achieved by ensuring they are appropriate for the exact environment and gases where the product will be used. An explosion is a rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner, usually caused by the generation of high temperatures caused by the release or ignition of gases Explosion-proof does not mean the product will remain operational in an artillery or bombardment type attack. It rather means that it can be used to protect people and property in hazardous environments. Slide 3

5 What is ATEX all about? FRAMEWORK The ATEX Product Directive 94/9/EG sets the rules for the sale of products that are installed and used in areas where a danger of explosion can exist. This guideline also includes non-electronic devices. The ATEX EC Directive 94/9/EG is a legal framework that businesses must follow in order to protect employees and property from explosion risk in areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere. 6 ATEX basics Purpose of ATEX-certified products They are designed to allow electrical equipment to work safely in areas where the risk of an explosion may be present If a fault occurs inside of the products, they are robust enough to continue protecting the personnel and property in the hazardous area Explosive hazards can be caused by inflammable gases, vapours, mists or dust, so the products are specifically engineered to cater for these. The Phoenix range is certified as Ex d flameproof which means that in normal use explosive gas at atmospheric pressure may seep into the housing. Should it be ignited, the resulting explosion is contained within the housing body and no flames or hot gases will escape to ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Product robustness Firstly, it is strong enough and will not burst under the intense pressure of an internal explosion Secondly, it ensures that any gases that manage to escape will have been adequately cooled and so will have insufficient energy to ignite the outside atmosphere. 7 ATEX Quick Facts As ATEX is essentially a health and safety directive with statutory powers, there are legal requirements which must always be borne in mind These safety requirements came about as a result of devastating incidents such as Flixborough and Piper Alpha which caused loss of life and severe infrastructure damage The current Phoenix range has met the ATEX requirements since July 2003 when they became law in the EU Since the early 1990s, Phoenix flameproof products have been continuously installed on oil & gas exploration rigs in the North Sea, Indian Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, as well as chemical plants, research establishments, etc... They are long-lived, reliable and survive very well in harsh conditions The bodies are powder-coated over a chromate primer, with anodised end-plates, for maximum protection against corrosion They use stainless steel screw fixings and brass cable glands for dependable performance in hostile environments Slide 7
8 Flammability Risk Gases and dusts present considerably different hazards, so they have been classified into separate groups which reflect their flammability in air or how big the explosion risk is. àthe Phoenix product range is certified for use with Gas Groups IIA, IIB and IIC. Gas group IIA: an example for this group is Propane. It cannot tolerate a rich gas-air mixture, it also needs a more powerful spark to be ignited. As it is heavier than air it will sink to a lower level and so may not mix so readily. Gas group IIB: this group includes typical gases such as Ethylene and Ethyl Methyl Ether and any other gases included in IIA. They cannot ignite so readily if there is a rich gas-toair mixture. They also need a spark with more energy as the ignition source and they weigh about the same as air, so they may not mix as readily as IIC gases. Gas group IIC: the most hazardous group - gases here include Hydrogen and Acetylene and any other gases included in IIA and IIB. They ignite easily in air over a wide range of gas-to-air ratios and the ignition source may be a spark with very little energy, e.g. the static electrical charge from a hair-comb. In addition, they are lighter than air and so mix very easily to produce an explosive mixture. Slide 8
9 Suitability Every ATEX product must display an approved label to confirm what it is certified for and where it can legally and safely be used. This label will also have a serial number so that all sold items can be traced back, via distribution, to the manufacturer. End users and site operators appoint Safety Officers, who are responsible for evaluating hazardous sites and selecting suitable equipment. It is always the customer s responsibility to ensure that Phoenix equipment is suitable for their purposes in a hazardous area. Slide 9
10 ATEX Marking The ATEX marking is understood by customer s site safety officer, so it s best to leave it to them The ATEX marking appears intimidating at first sight, but is easily deciphered, as shown in this example of the marking for an FH07B camera housing: Ex II 2 GD Ex db IIB T6 Ex tb IIIC T85 C Db Ex Subject to ATEX certification II Equipment group, suitable for use in hazardous areas (but not Group 1, Mining) 2 Category 2 equipment giving a high level of protection G Gases, Zone 1 where a hazard is likely to exist for up to 1000 hours per annum D Dust, Zone 21 - as above Ex db For use in gas atmospheres the type of construction is flameproof, pressure-resistant casing IIB Gas group, representative gas is Ethylene (also includes less dangerous gases in Group IIA) T6 Temperature class maximum body temperature will not exceed +85 C Gb Equipment Protection level - Zone 1 as above Ex tb For use in dust atmospheres - type of construction is flameproof, pressure-resistant casing IIIC Protection against conductive dust, e.g. Aluminium powder T85 C External surface temperature will not exceed +85 C so it is safer with IIC gases Db Protection level, Zone 21 as above Slide 10

14 Protection afforded by the Phoenix range Temperature (T) Ratings The following are the maximum surface temperatures which equipment will reach when operating under normal and fault conditions in an ambient temperature of +40 C in a hazardous area. Phoenix equipment has been tested and certified to "T6 " which is well below the minimum ignition temperature for the gases and dust shown above. Put simply, it means that Phoenix products will be the coolest equipment installed! 18 Phoenix Portfolio Features & Benefits Long reliability and durability = lower post sales support costs. (helicopter flight costs) Anodised and Stainless Steel fixings and the use of quality materials for Marine and hostile environments combined with 30 years of experience means that many products are still working The aluminium alloy used in the Phoenix products has been specially selected for its outstanding strength, performance & reliability. Furthermore a spark will not be produced if the product is struck by a falling metal object (Friction Sparks) Each Phoenix product is internally pressure tested to over 500 psi to guarantee outstanding safety performance. IP connectivity = HD solutions with the CCMW3025 box camera combined with the RX-AC17-S-PCB PTZ receiver Not restricted to camera dome module type like the competition technology. Virtually any lens camera combination ½ resolution / low light can be used. (not thermal) Easily installed due to its modular design (subject to location) compared to some competitors products.
