1 SECTION WIRING DEVICES PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and other Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUBMITTALS A. Submit the following equipment, materials and products, including all fittings and accessories: 1. Receptacles 2. Toggle Switches 3. Occupancy/Vacancy Sensors 4. Wall Plates 5. Push Button Switches 6. Dimmers 1.3 GENERAL DESCRIPTION A. Furnish and install, where indicated on the drawings, wiring devices and occupancy sensors as specified herein and as shown on the drawings. 1.4 QUALITY STANDARDS A. All wiring devices shall be listed and labeled by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). 1. UL General-Use Snap Switches. 2. UL Electrical Attachment Plugs and Receptacles. 3. UL Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters. 4. UL 486A-80 Wire Connectors and Soldering Lugs for Use with Copper Conductors. 5. UL Receptacle-Plug Combinations for Use in Hazardous (classified) Locations. B. All wiring devices shall comply with applicable NEMA standards: 1. Std Pub/No. FB Plugs, Receptacles, and Connectors of the Pin and Sleeve Type for Hazardous Locations. 2. Std Pub/No. PR 2-86 Enclosures for Plugs, Receptacles and Connectors of the Pin and Sleeve Type. 3. Std Pub/No. PR 3-86 Guide to Pin and Sleeve Plugs, Receptacles, and Connectors. WIRING DEVICES
2 4. Std Pub/No. WD 1-85 General-Purpose Wiring Devices. 5. Std Pub/No. WD 6-83 Wiring Devices Dimensional Requirements. C. All switches shall comply with Federal Specification W-S-896E. (FS), NEMA WD-1 and UL Test 20. D. All receptacles shall comply with Federal Specification W-C-596F (FS) and UL 496. E. All GFCI receptacles shall include filters for protection from radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic interference (EMI). GFCI receptacle shall also include internal transient voltage surge suppression to protect against electronic component failures. Select GFCI receptacles shall be "weather resistant/proof" and "tamper resistant". PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS A. Hubbell B. Legrand/Pass & Seymour (Model Numbers indicated) C. Comply with NEMA WD 1, NEMA WD 6 configuration 5-20R, UL 498 Supplement SD and Federal Specification W-C-596. Required to be a crimped and welded terminal with right angle application connector. 2. Products: Legrand/Pass & Seymour, 5362 (20A duplex). B. Tamper-Resistant Specification Grade Convenience Receptacles, 20 A: 2.3 GFCI RECEPTACLES 1. Comply with NEMA WD1, NEMA WD6 configuration 5-20R, UL498 and Federal Specification W-C Products: Legrand/Pass & Seymour, TR5362 (20A duplex). A. Non-feed-through-type GFCI receptacles for locations in which no protection of downstream receptacles is required. B. General Description: Straight blade, non-feed-through-type. Comply with NEMA WD 1, NEMA WD 6, UL 498, Federal Specification W-C-596, and UL943, Class A. Include indicator light that is lighted when device is tripped. Shall have SafeLock protection: If critical components are damaged and ground fault protection is lost, power to receptacle shall be discontinued. Selected items are NAFTA-Compliant. WIRING DEVICES

Comply with NEMA WD1, NEMA WD6 configuration 5-20R, UL 498 Supplement SD, Federal Specification W-C-596 and UL943, Class A, and include indicator light that is lighted when device is tripped. 2. Products: Legrand/Pass & Seymour, 2095TR (20A duplex). 3. Products: Legrand/Pass & Seymour, 2095TRWR (20A duplex GFCI weather resistant). A. 4 3. Products: Legrand/Pass & Seymour, PS20AC3PL7 (20A - three-way). 4. Products: Legrand/Pass & Seymour, PS30AC1PL7 (30A - single pole). 2.5 PUSH BUTTON SWITCHES A. Modular, momentary contact, low voltage type. 2.6 OCCUPANCY/VACANCY SENSORS A. Sensors shall comply with the following as a minimum: 1. Zero crossing switching operation (switch on/off only where sine wave is at zero volts) suitable for linear, non-linear and electronic/magnetic fluorescent ballasts for the loads indicated. Where the load to be controlled exceeds the sensor load rating provide a separate relay of adequate rating. 2. Failure of the unit shall be to the on/closed position or manual operation. 3. Motion sensitivity adjustment (dip switch or dial) and time delay adjustment (5 to 30 minutes minimum, dip switch or dial). 4. Low voltage or line voltage input and switching. 5. UL listed and have a five year manufacturer full replacement warranty. 6. Test mode feature to override the set time delay to allow adjusting of the sensitivity. 7. Sensor locations shall be adjusted during construction and at occupancy as recommended by the manufacturer for optimal sensing and operation. 8. Operation shall have adjustable time delay. Occupancy sensors shall have automatic on and vacancy sensors shall have manual on. 9. Adjustable controls/settings shall only be accessible when the front cover is removed or from the back of the unit. 10. Unit color shall match the project devices except for the ceiling mounted units which shall match the ceiling color. All color selections shall be by the Architect. 11. Ultrasonic sensing shall not be affected by air movement and shall operate at 32 khz minimum (shall not interfere with hearing aids or other equipment). 12. Provide components as needed for the indicated control. 13. A factory authorized representative shall coordinate and instruct the start up services of the sensors providing placement recommendations, connection guidance and start up supervision and adjustment. 5 B. Wall Mounted - Dual Technology (PIR and Ultrasonic): 1. Unit shall fit into a standard single gang electrical box, have an on/off button and utilize PIR and ultrasonic technology motion sensing. Both types of sensing are needed for contact closure but only one is needed to keep it closed. Selectable manual or automatic on mode. 2. Minimum Switching Capacity: 120 V W, 277 V W. 3. The sensing shall be 180 and the sensitivity area to be a minimum of: a. Major Motion (Walking/Arm Wave): 35 ft. x 30 ft. b. Minor Motion (Small Motion at Desk): 20 ft. x 15 ft. 4. Ambient light level sensing (adjustable fc) to prevent "on" operation when the ambient light level is greater than the set point level. 5. High impact resistant sensor lens. 6. Acceptable Manufacturers: a. Hubbell Model AD2000 or AD2001 (Design Make) b. Watt Stopper c. Cooper d. Sensor Switch C. Wall Mounted - Dual Technology - Dual Switching: 1. Unit shall fit into a standard single gang electrical box, have two on/off buttons and utilize PIR and ultrasonic technology motion sensing. Both types of sensing are needed for contact closure but only one is needed to keep it closed. To have two contacts each fully rated, electrically separate and be commonly controlled. Selectable manual or automatic on mode. 2. Minimum switching capacity: 120 V W, 277 V W. 3. The sensing shall be 180 and the sensitivity area to be a minimum of: a. Major Motion (Walking/Arm Wave): 35 ft. x 30 ft. b. Minor Motion (Small Motion at Desk): 20 ft. x 15 ft. 4. Ambient light level sensing (adjustable fc) to prevent "on" operation when the ambient light level is greater than the set point level. 5. High impact resistant sensor lens. 6. Unit shall mount to standard octagonal box, have adjustable sensitivity/time delay, have auxiliary contact (form C, 0.5A at 24 VDC) and utilize PIR and ultrasonic technology motion sensing. Both types of sensing are needed for contact closure but only one is needed to keep it closed. Auxiliary contact shall indicate movement sensing and be selectable to utilize time delay or not. 2. Shall have self contained rated contacts or control a separate switch pack. If a self contained unit then the ratings and function shall meet or exceed the switch pack specifications. 3. Sensing shall be 360 with a minimum operating area of: a. Major Motion (Walking/Arm Wave): 50 ft. x 30 ft. b. Minor Motion (Small Motion at Desk): 40 ft. x 20 ft. c. Corridor (Major Motion): 50 ft. x 16 ft. 4. Units shall be suitable for overlap of motion detection areas without reduction in spacing and false operation. 5. Sensing shall be suitable for a ceiling/mounting height of up to 12 ft. minimum. 6. Low voltage. 7. Acceptable Manufacturers: a. Hubbell b. Watt Stopper c. Cooper d. Sensor Switch E. Ceiling Mounted - Vacancy Sensor - Dual Technology: 1. Unit shall mount to standard octagonal box, have adjustable sensitivity/time delay, have auxiliary contact (form C, 0.5A at 24 VDC) and utilize PIR and ultrasonic technology motion sensing. Both types of sensing are needed for contact closure but only one is needed to keep it closed. Operation shall require manual operation of momentary wall switch for lighting to be switched on and automatic off. Auxiliary contact shall indicate movement sensing and be selectable to utilize time delay or not. 2. Shall have self contained rated contacts or control a separate switch pack. If a self contained unit then the ratings and function shall meet or exceed the switch pack specifications. WIRING DEVICES
7 3. Sensing shall be 360 with a minimum operating area of: a. Major Motion (Walking/Arm Wave): 50 ft. x 30 ft. b. Minor Motion (Small Motion at Desk): 40 ft. x 20 ft. c. Corridor (Major Motion): 50 ft. x 16 ft. 4. Units shall be suitable for overlap of motion detection areas without reduction in spacing and false operation. 5. Sensing shall be suitable for a ceiling/mounting height of up to 12 ft. minimum. 6. The maximum depth shall be 1.5 in. below the ceiling/box. 7. Provide momentary switch(s) and any other needed equipment for indicated operation. 8. Acceptable Manufacturers: F. Switch Pack: a. Hubbell b. Watt Stopper c. Cooper d. Sensor Switch 1. Provide a minimum of one (1) switch pack for each ceiling mounted occupancy sensor. Provide additional units for multiple circuits (quantity to match the quantity of circuits). 2. Unit shall be plenum rated with line voltage side into a metallic box. 3. Low voltage power shall be suitable for a minimum of three (3) occupancy sensors. Multiple sensors shall be able to control a single switch pack. 4. Minimum switching capacity shall be 20A (all types of loads) at 120/277VAC. G. Testing: 2.7 LIGHTING DIMMERS 1. Each occupancy sensor shall be fully tested for proper operation of all functions after installation. 2. Testing shall include sensitivity, time delay, ambient lighting level, etc. 3. Operation and settings shall be acceptable to the Owner. A. Provide lighting dimmer where indicated suitable for the type of luminaire for even continuous control. Unit shall be rated for the indicated connected load plus 25% minimum (even when ganged). Review luminaire schedule for type and loading. Provide for three-way control as indicated. WIRING DEVICES
8 B. Dimmers to be Lutron "Nova" NT-(1000W minimum) with debuzzing coil for incandescent. C. Low voltage dimming shall be as recommended by the luminaire manufacturer for magnetic or solid state. D. LED dimmers shall be as recommended by the luminaire manufacturer and be listed for use with the associated driver. E. Device color shall match the toggle switch. F. Acceptable Manufacturers: 2.8 WALL PLATES 1. Lutron 2. Approved Equal A. Wall Plates: 1. General: Single and combination types to match corresponding wiring devices. 2. Plate-Securing Screws: Metal with head color to match plate finish. 3. Material for Finished Spaces: in. thick, satin-finished stainless steel. 4. Material for Unfinished Spaces: Smooth, high-impact thermoplastic. 5. Material for Damp Locations: Cast aluminum with spring-loaded lift cover, and listed and labeled for use in "wet locations." B. Wet-Location, Weatherproof Cover Plates: 2.9 FINISHES 1. Compliance: NEMA 250, complying with type 3R weather-resistant with lockable cover. 2. Material: Die-cast aluminum. A. Wiring Devices Connected to Normal Power System: 1. Color: As selected by Architect, unless otherwise indicated or required by NFPA 70 or device listing. B. Wiring Devices Connected to Emergency Power System: Red. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared. WIRING DEVICES
9 B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation. B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions. 3.3 INSTALLATION A. Comply with NECA 1, including the mounting heights listed in that standard, unless otherwise noted. B. Coordination with Other Trades: 1. Take steps to insure that devices and their boxes are protected. Do not place wall finish materials over device boxes and do not cut holes for boxes with routers that are guided by riding against outside of the boxes. 2. Keep outlet boxes free of plaster, drywall joint compound, mortar, cement, concrete, dust, paint, and other material that may contaminate the raceway system, conductors, and cables. 3. Install device boxes in brick or block walls so that the cover plate does not cross a joint unless the joint is troweled flush with the face of the wall. 4. Install wiring devices after all wall preparation, including painting, is complete. C. Conductors: 1. Do not strip insulation from conductors until just before they are spliced or terminated on devices. 2. Strip insulation evenly around the conductor using tools designed for the purpose. Avoid scoring or nicking of solid wire or cutting strands from stranded wire. 3. The length of free conductors at outlets for devices shall meet provisions of NFPA 70, Article 300, without pigtails. 4. Existing Conductors: a. Cut back and pigtail, or replace all damaged conductors. b. Straighten conductors that remain and remove corrosion and foreign matter. c. Pigtailing existing conductors is permitted provided the outlet box is large enough. WIRING DEVICES
10 5. Extend separate equipment ground wire (same size as power conductor to receptacles). D. Device Installation: 1. Replace all devices that have been in temporary use during construction or that show signs that they were installed before building finishing operations were complete. 2. Keep each wiring device in its package or otherwise protected until it is time to connect conductors. 3. Do not remove surface protection, such as plastic film and smudge covers, until the last possible moment. 4. Connect devices to branch circuits using pigtails that are not less than 6 inches (152 mm) in length. 5. When there is a choice, use side wiring with binding-head screw terminals. Wrap solid conductor tightly clockwise, 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around terminal screw. 6. Use a torque screwdriver when a torque is recommended or required by the manufacturer. 7. When conductors larger than No. 12 AWG are installed 20-A circuits, splice No. 12 AWG pigtails for device connections. 8. Tighten unused terminal screws on the device. 9. When mounting into metal boxes, remove the fiber or plastic washers used to hold device mounting screws in yokes, allowing metal-to-metal contact. 10. Where devices are mounted in a common box they shall be so arranged that the voltage between adjacent devices does not exceed 300 volts (refer to NEC ). E. Receptacle Orientation: 1. Install ground pin of vertically mounted receptacles up. 2. Install ground pin of horizontally mounted receptacles to the right. F. Device Plates: Do not use oversized or extra-deep plates. Repair wall finishes and remount outlet boxes when standard device plates do not fit flush or do not cover rough wall opening. G. Arrangement of Devices: Unless otherwise indicated, mount flush, with long dimension vertical and with grounding terminal of receptacles on top. Group adjacent switches under single, multi-gang wall plates. Mount receptacles with long dimension horizontal above all work counters and desks. WIRING DEVICES
11 H. Adjust locations of floor service outlets and service poles to suit arrangement of partitions and furnishings. 3.4 IDENTIFICATION A. Receptacles: Identify panelboard and circuit number from which served. Use hot, stamped or engraved machine printing with -filled lettering on face of plate, and durable wire markers or tags inside outlet boxes. 1. Fill Color: Black. 3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Perform tests and inspections and prepare test reports. 1. In healthcare facilities, prepare reports that comply with recommendations in NFPA Test Instruments: Use instruments that comply with UL Test Instrument for Convenience Receptacles: Digital wiring analyzer with digital readout or illuminated LED indicators of measurement. B. Tests for Convenience Receptacles: 3.6 PROTECTION 1. Line Voltage: Acceptable range is 105 to 132 V. 2. Percent Voltage Drop under 15-A Load: A value of 6 percent or higher is not acceptable. 3. Ground Impedance: Values of up to 2 ohms are acceptable. 4. GFCI Trip: Test for tripping values specified in UL 1436 and UL Using the test plug, verify that the device and its outlet box are securely mounted. 6. The tests shall be diagnostic, indicating damaged conductors, high resistance at the circuit breaker, poor connections, inadequate fault current path, defective devices, or similar problems. Correct circuit conditions, remove malfunctioning units and replace with new ones, and retest as specified above. A. Protect installed products until completion of project. B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion. END OF SECTION WIRING DEVICES
