Getting Started Introduction The Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System (DTS) addresses spatially distributed temperature sensing applications. The range of applications covers downhole performance monitoring of oil & gas wells; pipeline leakage detection; high power cable monitoring; and many more applications. The Agilent DTS offers a reliable and robust way to measure the temperature along the sensing fiber. NOTE To get the most performance out of your distributed temperature system, it is recommended that you read Measurement Concepts on page 7, and Chapter 2, Making Measurements. These chapters describe the different measurements, and the setup procedures. 6 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Getting Started Measurement Concepts Agilent s distributed measurement is based on the proven Raman-Optical Time-Domain-Reflectometry technique. An optical laser pulse propagating through the fiber gets scattered light back to the transmitting end, where it is analyzed. The intensity of the Raman scatter is a measure for the temperature along the fiber. The backscattered light is spread across a range of wavelengths. Some of these wavelengths are affected by temperature changes while others are immune. By very accurately measuring the difference in the signal intensity of the backscattered light an accurate temperature measurement can be made. The position of the temperature reading is determined by measuring the arrival timing of the returning light pulse similar to a radar echo showing the distance of a car or plane. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 7

Getting Started The temperature resolution is dependent on several factors: Measurement time, spatial resolution, the length of the fiber and the loss of the fiber, splices or connectors. 8 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Getting Started Using the default connectors CAUTION The Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System is shipped with an angled contact optical output (E angled, MM50 μm graded index). Angled contact connectors help you to control return loss. With angled fiber endfaces, reflected light tends to reflect into the cladding, reducing the amount of light that reflects back to the source. Use only cables with angled connectors with the instrument. Using a cable with a straight connector will damage an instrument with an angled connector. Using the connectors outside the case The E2000 connector can be unmounted from the housing and used outside the case. 1 Unplug the power supply. 2 The E2000 connector(s) on the DTS are inside the case. To access them, remove the cover of the housing. a You do this by using a Torx T8 screwdriver to remove the screws along the back of the housing. 2 b Lift off the cover. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 23

Getting Started 3 Untighten the bushing on the rear left of the housing Remove the connector from the inside of the adaptor. 5 Thread the cable and connector through the bushing Make sure that the cable inside the housing lies in a relaxed arc and is not pulled tightly. 7 If you have more than one connector you want to remove from the rear panel of the housing, repeat Step 4 to Step Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Getting Started 8 Tighten the bushing until the fiber can no longer pull through it (strain relief). 9 If you want to mount the cables on another panel, you can unscrew the holding plate with the adaptors from the inside rear of housing and reuse it. 10 Put the cover back on the housing and screw it shut. Splicing the sensor fiber The E2000 connector can be removed and the DTS spliced directly to the sensor fiber. 1 Unplug the power supply. 2 The E2000 connector(s) on the DTS are inside the case. To access them, remove the cover of the housing. a You do this by using a Torx T8 screwdriver to remove the screws along the back of the housing. 2 b Lift off the cover. 3 Remove the connector from the inside of the adaptor. 3 5 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 25

Getting Started NOTE The instrument needs to be returned in the status as delivered. If changes have been made (such as changes to the connectors) it needs to be returned to the original status by resplicing connectors, otherwise the return will be treated as a repair. 4 Cut off the E2000 connector. 5 Untighten the bushing on the rear left of the housing. 6 Feed the sensor fiber through the bushing. If the sensor fiber has a diameter of less than 3mm, you will need to use the sealing inset with the correct diameter (see Accessories available from Pflitsch on page 67) to ensure the bushing can hold the fiber tightly enough to ensure strain on the fiber is not passed into the DTS Splice the sensor fiber to the DTS fiber. 8 Tighten the bushing until the fiber can no longer pull through it (strain relief). 26 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Getting Started 9 The fiber in the DTS should be wound onto the fiber tray, and the splice secured. 10 Put the cover back on the housing and screw it shut. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 27

Getting Started Terminating the Sensor Fiber To guarantee the specification throughout the whole measurement distance, we recommend excess fiber of 200 m. The sensor fiber should be terminated to guarantee low back reflection. This can be achieved by winding at least 5 loops with diameter smaller than 5mm, by polishing an angle or cleaving of more than 14 to the fiber end, by immersing the end of the fiber in index matching fluid, or any combination winding, polishing, and immersing as described here. Please note, that a clean fiber end is a precondition for termination by polishing or immersing! 28 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Getting Started Connecting to the Output and Input Relays The DTS provides 20 relay outputs (volt-free contacts) that are capable of notifying the user of alarm conditions. The relays are normally open and in the event of an alarm condition the contacts will be closed. Reverse logic can also be programmed. The resulting ability to switch between these two states provides several options for the user. For example, the output can be used to operate external audible alarms or warning lamps. 32 Making Measurements Starting the Distributed Temperature System 1 Turn on the distributed temperature system. 2 Allow it to warm up. LED A blinks until internal temperatures settle, then stays on until booting is finished. LED B switches on when booting has finished. Once the system has been turned on it can be controlled in one of two ways: Using the Agilent DTS Configurator software supplied with the system. The User s Guide for the PC software is included on the CD supplied with the distributed temperature system. Using your own program. This can be written using SCPI commands. The Programmer s Guide with a list of the available commands and some examples to get you started is included on the CD supplied with the distributed temperature system. 32 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Making Measurements N4385A/86A DTS Performance Test Equipment required The procedures in this section test the specified performance of the Agilent N4385A/86 Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. Specified quantities: Temperature resolution with sensing fiber length 2 km, Temperature resolution with sensing fiber length 4 km. Temperature resolution with sensing fiber length 8 km. The equipment required for the performance tests is listed in the table below. Any equipment which satisfies the critical specifications of the equipment given in the table, may be substituted for the recommended models. Instrument/ Accessory Required Characteristics Fiber Length J-Fiber OptiGrade Multimode Fiber 50/125 µm, class 600 Attenuation: ~ nm, ~ nm Bandwidth: > 600 MHz 850 nm & 1300nm Fiber spliced to the instrument (see note) - N4385A/86A -002: 2200 m - N4385A/86A -004: 2200 m and 4200 m - N4385A/86A -008: 220m; 2200 m and 4200 m NOTE The performance testing requires the fiber to be spliced to the instrument. If the DUT is connected to the DTS using an optical connector the temperature resolution performance is reduced (typically by 12% for a 0.5 db one-way connector loss). Specification may not be met when using a connectorized test fiber. Make sure that all optical connections of the test setup are dry and clean. Make sure that all optical connectors are undamaged. For cleaning, use the cleaning instructions given in Cleaning on page 44. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 33

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Cleaning Safety precautions Agilent Technologies assumes no liability for the customer s failure to comply with these requirements. WARNING Please follow the following safety rules. Do not remove instrument covers when operating. Ensure that the instrument is switched off throughout the cleaning procedures. Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified may result in hazardous radiation exposure. Make sure that you disable all sources when you are cleaning any optical interfaces. Under no circumstances look into the end of an optical device attached to optical outputs when the device is operational. The laser radiation is not visible to the human eye, but it can seriously damage your eyesight. To prevent electrical shock, disconnect the instrument from the mains before cleaning. Use a dry cloth, or one slightly dampened with water, to clean the external case parts. Do not open the card cage inside the DTS, or attempt to clean it internally. Do not install parts or perform any unauthorized modification to optical devices. Refer servicing only to qualified and authorized personnel. What do I need for proper cleaning? To clean the optical connectors and adaptors on the DTS, we recommend A stick cleaner for optical connectors, or the Diamond Ferrule Cleaner 2.5 (Diamond part number BCC To clean the connector thoroughly, we recommend A cartridge cleaning tools such as OPTIPOP or CLETOP, or a card cleaner. 44 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Troubleshooting and Maintenance The E2000 Service-Adapter (Diamond part number GBC ) WARNING Take care never to look into the end of a fiber or any other optical component when they are in use. This is because the laser can seriously damage your eyes. Preserving connectors Making connections Before you make any connection you must ensure that all cables and connectors are clean. If they are dirty, use the appropriate cleaning procedure. Dust caps Cleaning instrument housings Always make sure the dust cap on the E2000 adapter closes when the connector is not in use. Use a dry and very soft cotton tissue to clean the instrument housing. In the case of heavy dirt, you can moisten the cotton tissue in water. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 45

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Cleaning the optical connectors and adaptors To clean the connector 1 Unplug the power supply. 2 The E2000 connector(s) on the DTS are inside the case. To clean these connectors thoroughly, remove the cover of the housing. a You do this by using a Torx T8 screwdriver to remove the screws along the back of the housing. b Lift off the cover. 3 Remove the connector from the panel adaptor. 4 Open the dust cap on the connector using the E2000 service adaptor. 5 Clean the end of the connector using a cartridge cleaner or card cleaner. 6 Remove the service adaptor. 7 Reinsert the connector in the panel adaptor. 8 When you have finished cleaning the connectors, put on the cover and screw it back into place. 9 Continue to clean the ferrule (see To clean the ferrule on page 47) 46 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Troubleshooting and Maintenance To clean the ferrule If you are using stick cleaners, 1 Take a fresh stick cleaner If you need to wet clean the adaptor to remove heavy dirt, wet the stick cleaner with ethanol or propanol. 2 Use a small pointed object to press down the dust protector inside the adaptor. 3 Insert the stick cleaner into the adaptor. 4 Rotate the stick cleaner 3 or four turns. 5 Remove the stick cleaner and dispose of it. If you are using a Diamond Ferrule Cleaner, follow the instructions that came with the device. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 47

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Replacing the Fuse 2 1 Unplug the power supply. 2 On the rear or the underside of the distributed temperature system, use a flat-tipped screwdriver to open the fuseholder. 3 Pull the fuse holder and fuse clear of the back panel. 4 Take the fuse out of the fuse cap and note the fuse rating. 5 Make sure the replacement fuse (T4A L 250V, Agilent Part No ) has the same rating. 6 Put the fuse into the fuse holder. 7 Put the fuse and fuse cap into the receptacle in the rear of the case and press it into place. 48 Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System

Troubleshooting and Maintenance Checking the Operation of the Distributed Temperature System 1 Power down the distributed temperature system. 2 Setup the hardware and connect the DTS to the controlling PC ( Setting up the hardware on page 15) 3 Connect a sensing fiber to the DTS 4 Switch-on the DTS 5 Observe the LED s on the DTS front panel while booting a At the start of booting all LED s are on for a few seconds. b As booting continues, LED A blinks until internal temperatures settle, then stays on until booting is finished. c LED B switches on to indicate the end of the boot process. The DTS is ready to use. Check the following error conditions: All LEDs off: Check the power supply. If the power supply is working check the fuse on the underside or rear panel of the DTS ( Replacing the Fuse on page 48). Try again The DTS doesn t finish the boot process or the error LED Err is on: Switch the DTS off and on and try again. If the error conditions still exist, contact Agilent for support. 6 Setup the DTS using the Connection Expert included in the Agilent IO Libraries (please refer to the information supplied with the IO Librarires) The Connection Expert on your PC should find the DTS and identify it with the identification query (*IDN?) 7 Start the DTS Configurator software 8 Setup and start a measurement with the DTS Configurator software (please refer to the information supplied with the DTS Configurator software) If there is a measurement problem, check if the sensing fiber is correctly connected. If you still have a problem, contact Agilent for support. Agilent N4385A/N4386A Distributed Temperature System 49
