5 Tamper Monitoring Choose one of the following connection options. Note: If you are using the SDR-WEXT-G3, also configure the Tmp Feed jumper, depending on the option used (see page 8). OPTION 1: Connect to a dedicated TR terminal at control unit. OPTION 2: Connect to a zone* of type "Tamper Return". In i-on/menvier systems, TR should connect to the non-zero-volt terminal of the zone (i.e. next to the "Z" on the terminal label); leave the other terminal of the zone unconnected. Connect to zone* configured as type "Tamper Return". OPTION 3 (grade 3 only): *If the zone contacts are 4-wire CC, use the tamper contacts and link the alarm contacts. 6 Connection Details TR The TR terminal provides the control unit with the tamper status of the siren. TR is activated (and the siren self-activates) if any of the following occurs: a) The siren's tamper switch is activated. b) The BELL input from the control unit/expander is cut, providing the Trig Mon link (page 7) is fitted (SDR-WEXT- G3 only). c) Power from the control unit/expander is disconnected. When using the SDR-WEXT-G2, TR is taken directly to 0V when a tamper is detected. When using the SDR-WEXT-G3, the voltage and termination of the TR terminal must be configured using the Tmp Feed jumper (see page 8). ENG (Installer Mode) Setting the ENG input to 0V sets the siren in installer (engineer) mode. You should normally connect ENG to a control unit/expander output configured as type "Installer on Site", which activates when entering the Installer menu at a keypad and deactivates when exiting the Installer menu (at every keypad). Installer mode prevents the sounder and strobe from activating when the lid is opened. When installer mode is activated, both comfort LEDs switch on continuously for a few minutes. STR and BELL 0V at the STR (strobe) input activates the strobe. 0V at the BELL (trigger) input activates the sounder. Some control units provided dedicated strobe and bell outputs. If not (or an expander is used), connect to outputs of type "Strobe" and "Siren" respectively. F-F and F-R and RST The SDR-WEXT-G3 provides F-F (Fault Feed) and F-R (Fault Return) volt-free terminals, which are used to provide sounder and battery fault reporting to the control unit. To enable sounder and battery fault reporting, see Quick Reference on page 4 for connection and configuration details. Technical Detail for Advanced Installers The siren tests the battery voltage under load conditions every hour and when the ENG input is deactivated. The sounder is tested each time it is activated. Under normal conditions, F-F and F-R are closed circuit. If either test fails, F-F and F-R go open circuit, which causes the control unit to generate an alarm. The contacts remain open circuit until the test is successful or the siren's tamper switch is activated (in the latter case, the siren assumes that an engineer is fixing the problem). A sounder or battery fault may prevent the system from being set (depending on grade) and cannot be cleared until the siren's tamper switch is activated, or the test is performed again and passes. You can start a test manually by using the Installer Menu Test Sirens & Sounders Wired Sirens Remote Self-Test, which tests both the sounder and battery. When Remote Self-Test is used, the RST (Remote Self-Test) input is set to 0V for the duration of the test. This causes F-F and F- R momentarily to go open circuit, which confirms to the control unit that the siren is healthy. If the siren passes, F-F and F-R go closed circuit (normal state) within 60 seconds. The siren fails the test if the contacts remain open after 60 seconds or if the control unit does not detect the open circuit at the start of the test. A remote self-test occurs only when RST is 0V; setting RST to 12V or leaving it unconnected disables remote self-test. Page 6

7 TF The SDR-WEXT-G3 has a TF (Tamper Feed) terminal, which should be used only if a Tmp Feed link is not fitted. TF and TR go open circuit on a tamper condition; the normal state is open circuit. PCB Jumper Details SCB/SAB Trig Mon In SAB (Self-Activating Bell) mode, which is the typical choice, the siren draws all its power from the control unit/expander. The internal battery is used only if power from the control unit/expander is disconnected. In SCB (Self-Contained Bell) mode, all power to operate the siren when in a non-alarm state is drawn from the control unit/expander. When in an alarm state, the siren sources power from its own internal battery. Typically, SCB mode is used if the control unit/expander is not able to provide sufficient power (e.g. if multiple sirens are used). The SDR-WEXT-G3 has a Trig Mon (Trigger Monitor) jumper. Fitting a link allows the siren to monitor the BELL input for tamper conditions (e,g, caused by the wire being cut). If a BELL tamper condition is detected, the sounder and TR output activate. The output at the control unit/expander end of the cable requires a 4k7 pull-up resistor (between the output and 12Vdc ). This is provided by default if you are using an open-collector transistor output from an i-on, Menvier or Scantronic control unit/expander (such as provided by the BELL output). If a relay-type output is used, you need to add the resistor yourself. If you are using an open-collector output from another type of control unit and want to check for the presence of a 4k7 pull-up, temporarily connect a separate 4k7 resistor between the output and 0V; if a 4k7 resistor is present, the voltage at the output should be half of the supply voltage to the siren (typically 6.9Vdc). The jumper setting is read when power is applied or the lid is opened. Tone Slct Fit a link across Tone Slct (Tone Select) or leave it disconnected to choose one of two tones from the sounder. You may want to use this feature if, for example, you want to be able to distinguish two sounders that are in close proximity. Time The Time (Cut-Off Timer) jumper configures the maximum length of time the sounder operates following an alarm (even if the BELL input is still active). Choose 5 seconds, 3 minutes or leave the link disconnected for a default cut-off time of 15 minutes. Note: To reactivate the sounder, the BELL input must be taken to 12V for at least two seconds before 0V is reapplied. The jumper setting is read when power is applied or the lid is opened. LED En Fit a link across LED En (LED Enable) to enable the comfort LEDs. The jumper setting is read when power is applied or the lid is opened. During normal operation, the comfort LEDs flash alternately when the siren has power connected to give a visual indication that the system is operational. When installer mode is activated, both comfort LEDs switch on continuously for a few minutes. The comfort LEDs also switch on continuously during the silent startup period between connecting the battery and 10 seconds after closing the lid. Page 7

8 Tmp Feed The SDR-WEXT-G3 contains a Tmp Feed (Tamper Feed) jumper, which determines the voltage of the TR terminal and how the sounder terminates TR, as described next. EOL Setting Use the "eol" setting if: This setting ("eol") causes TR to connect to 0V through a 2k2 on-board resistor. You connect TR to a dedicated bell/strobe TR input at the control unit, and the input is programmed (see Note 1) to use FSL wiring. Note 1: In i-on/menvier systems, using Installer Menu System Options Panel Tamper Rtn. "-" Setting Use the "-" setting if: This setting ("-") causes TR to connect directly to 0V. You connect TR to a dedicated bell/strobe TR input at the control unit, and the input is programmed (see Note 1 above) to use CC wiring. You connect TR to a zone that is configured as type "Tamper Return". "+" Setting "No link" Setting This setting ("+") causes TR to connect to 12V through a 1k0 on-board resistor. This may be required for third-party panels. When no link is fitted, TR connects directly to TF. Use the "no link" setting if: You connect TR and TF to a zone configured as type "Tamper Return". You wish to fit an alternative in-line resistor of your choice between TR and 12V/0V. Fault and Tamper Monitoring The siren monitors the following: Tamper conditions All tamper conditions reported by the TR terminal (see page 6) are continuously monitored. The siren self-activates on a tamper. Battery voltage (SDR-WEXT-G3 only) The siren monitors the battery voltage under load conditions and reports a fault during a remote self-test and at other times (see page 6). Sounder operation (SDR-WEXT-G3 only) If the F-R output is used, the siren checks that the sounder is audible during a remote self-test (see page 6) and when operated. Summary of Strobe Operation The strobe operates if the siren selfactivates or if the control unit/expander sets the STR input to 0V. After 15 minutes of the siren being activated, the strobe flashes at a slower rate until the alarm is reset. In i-on/menvier systems, the strobe can also be configured using the Set Conf link and the Strobe on Set/Unset options (see "PCB Jumper Details"). Maintenance NOTE: Start installer mode (page 6) before opening the lid of the siren. This should prevent the sounder from activating. However, be prepared in the event that the sounder does activate make sure that any very loud noise produced cannot result in a fall. During routine maintenance, test the siren for correct operation, carry out a remote self-test (see page 6), check the tamper switch and for any signs of water or insect ingress and clean as necessary. Page 8

9 NOTE: Equipment must be disposed of in accordance with WEEE regulations and any other local or national regulations. Cable Recommendations Standard 7/0.2 un-screened alarm cable should be used. The maximum recommended cable distance is 50m if you are using SAB mode and only TR for tamper monitoring (i.e. not both TR and TF). This can be increased to 100m by doubling the 0V cores. The maximum recommended cable distance is 100m if you are using SCB mode, or both TR and TF for tamper monitoring.
