4 There are 4 major reasons why there is a high risk of fire in a data center Heavy power load Electrical fire risk Infrastructure Ventilation Heavy power loads or a defective piece of equipment can very quickly lead to a short circuit or overheating Constant ignition source electricity and combustible materials such as plastics in printed circuit boards Extensive cabling, particularly below raised floors Comprehensive aircooling resulting in a higher air exchange, increases risk of spreading the fire Page 4

8 When it comes to data centers, NFPA provides most details on how to protect it against fire Fire extinguishing agents included in the standard can be applied to Class A and Class C fires These fire classes are the ones found in data centers Energized electrical equipment Initiated by overload/short circuits or electrical problems Note that water-based fire protection systems, such as sprinklers, provides primarily structural protection and NOT asset protection Page 8
