1 SECTION PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION: A. The Work shall consist of furnishing, installation and testing of a complete Intelligent Analogue Addressable fire alarm system as shown on the drawings and specified herein. 1.2 REFERENCES: A. BS - British Standards Institute 1.3 SUBMITTALS: All applicable codes and standards including BS 5839, BS 5750 and BSEN ISO 9001/2 A. Product data for fire alarm system components including dimensioned plans, sections, and elevations showing minimum clearances, installed features and devices, and list of materials and NRTL listing data. B. Wiring diagrams from manufacturer differentiating between manufacturer-installed and field-installed wiring. Include diagrams for equipment and for system with all terminals and interconnections identified. Include drawings indicating components for both field and factory panel wiring / ٢

3 C. Shop drawings. D. System operation description including method of operation and supervision of each type of circuit and sequence of operations for all manually and automatically initiated system inputs. Description shall cover this specific project. Manufacturer's standard descriptions for generic systems are not acceptable. E. Product certification signed by the manufacturer of the fire alarm system components certifying that their products comply with the referenced standards and specifications. 1.4 TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING AND STORAGE: A. All the components of fire alarm system shall be provided in manufacturer's original new and unopened packing bearing manufacturer's name and label. B. Store materials, not in actual use, in covered and wellventilated area and protect them from dirt, dust, moisture, direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. C. For further requirements follow manufacturer's written instructions regarding storage and handling. 1.5 WARRANTY: A. Submit written guarantee signed by the contractor, manufacturer and installer of fire alarm system for the period of 1 year from the date of substantial completion. The guarantee shall cover the repair and replacement of defective materials and workmanship as directed by the Engineer. 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE: A. Manufacturer's Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of fire alarm systems and components, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar services for not less than 5 years period, and be subject to approval of Engineer / ٣

4 B. Installer Qualifications: An experienced specialist subcontractor who is authorized by the system manufacturer, and subject to approval of the Engineer. C. All the components and installations shall comply with the requirements of BS, LPCB, NFPA and NEMA standards. D. Provide system and components specified in this section that are listed and labeled by UL and/or conform to equivalent BS Standards. E. Single Source Responsibility: All components and accessories shall be product of single manufacturer. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION: A. The system shall be complete network based Intelligent Analogue Addressable, double stage fire alarm system. The system shall be electrically supervised against both short and open wiring faults in the detection circuit, the alarm circuit and the alarm and fault relay coils. Alarms shall be initiated from either manual stations and/or various types of detectors. Alarms shall be sounded through conveniently located motorized bells or electronic sounders as applicable. The system shall be capable of being expanded at any time. The system shall consist of fire alarm control panels (FACP), repeater panels, computer operated network, break-glass type manual stations, detectors, electronic sounders, batteries, wiring, raceways and other required accessories to complete the system. B. The Fire Detection and Alarm System shall provide the following facilities as a minimum: 1. Detect automatically the presence of fire and give local audible and visual warning. 2. Provide audible and visual warning upon the manual operation of a call point / ٤

5 2.2 GENERAL: 3. Automatically shutdown air conditioning plant, lead elevators to nearest floor and capture them, in the event of fire and/or other ancillary services, if required. 4. The system shall be capable of monitoring pre-alarm condition and setting sensitivity of detectors. 5. Provide alarm at local Fire Station through automatic dialer. 6. Provide signaling interface to allow automatic announcement of pre-recorded message on Public Address System in case of alarm. 7. Provide interface with Building Management System (BMS). A. All component of fire alarm system shall be product of a single manufacturer and shall conform to the requirements of BS 5839: Part CODE OF PRACTICE FOR SYSTEM DESIGN, INSTALLATION AND SERVICING, Loss Prevention Certification Board, UK (LPCB), BS 5750 Quality Assurance Standard, Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) or equivalent Codes. B. The supply breakers for F.A. system shall be marked "DO NOT DISCONNECT, FIRE ALARM SUPPLY". 2.3 ANALOG ADDRESSABLE FIRE ALARM CONTROL PANEL (FACP): A. Fire alarm control panel shall be manufacturer's standard, capacity as shown on drawings. The notable system features shall be single point polling, multitasking high speed software, software designed zoning, detector sensitivity set by software, software programming of inputs to outputs (sophisticated event action), programmable relays and sounder modules on address loop, multi-isolation facility by circuit, zone or point, walk test facility, programmable access codes, system configuration and reconfiguration on site, extensive fault monitoring open and / ٥

6 short circuit, signaling, software, mains supply, no battery condition, sounder outputs, alarm and fault relays. B. The Cabinet shall be manufacturer's standard made of pressed sheet steel. The front door panel shall be pressure die cast, suitably hinged with dead front construction and satisfactory locking arrangement. C. Finish of cabinet shall be manufacturer's standard with wordings " Fire Controller " in English and Arabic. Front panel shall have factory inscriptions for all functions both in English and Arabic D. Monitoring and operation of control panel shall be possible without opening the cabinet. E. The panel shall operate on 220V AC and shall have standby power capabilities with batteries and rectifier complete with all required accessories necessary for the operation in case of power failure. F. Care shall be taken to wire all devices in continuous loop to preserve the integrity of the supervision. It shall be possible to extend loop circuits up to 2 km using twisted shielded cable. G. All device wiring shall be color coded and polarity shall be carefully observed. H. Wiring within the cabinet shall be arranged in a neat and orderly manner with all connected wires in the same relative position as shown on the connection diagram. I. It shall be suitable for operation in a temperature range of - 10 Deg. C to +55 Deg. C and a relative humidity of up to 95% (non-condensing). J. The number of field wiring loops available from each controller as built-in provision shall be ten (10) loops with 99 addressable points per loop. K. The user friendly panel shall incorporate the following features: / ٦

7 1. Fire/Disabled/Fault LED Indicators. 2. Mains power LED Indicator. 3. Six Programmable Access Levels via Keypad. 4. System Interrogation Buttons such as fast access, scroll up/down, enter/delete - color coded blue. 5. System control buttons such as silence, reset, test, evacuate - color coded red. 6. Alphanumeric display 80 characters to show type of event, incident number, zone, absolute point number, scroll/toggle command plus customer defined text message in English to ease identification. 7. Key switch for low level access. 8. On board zonal display to conform to BS 5839, 1988 or equivalent standards. 2.4 INTER-CONTROLLER NETWORK: A. The Inter-Controller Network shall allow different Fire Controllers to be "seamlessly" networked together. B. The network shall be highly resilient and allow true peer to peer communication such that an operator can gain access, interrogate as well as control other Fire Controllers (Nodes) from any one of the Fire Controller connected to this network. For extended interrogation and control, the network shall allow up to three nodes on the network to be configured either as a Master Operating Station or Graphical User Interface. C. The Virtual Front Panel (VFP) feature shall enable the operator to interrogate/control any other Fire Controller from the Keypad/Display of any given Fire Controller - interconnected on the network. Furthermore, it shall be possible to group controllers into sub-nets whereby, each panel can be programmed to inter-react only with other selected controllers / ٧

8 D. The network shall allow Bi-Directional signaling and use a token-passing, non collision communication protocol for data transmission. E. The network shall offer a high level of integrity and support combination of MICC, twisted/shielded pair cabling, fiber optic cabling or dedicated telephone line to suit site requirement. It shall be possible to locate different Fire Controllers as 'Nodes' on the network - up to 3000 meters apart to suit site requirement and be interconnected using shielded/twisted pair cable such as Belden 9841 or equal. F. The network shall be flexible so as to enable from 2 to 50 Fire Controllers to be seamlessly linked together, providing an enhanced system capability for future extension G. Data shall be re-generated at each Fire Controller and sent out over the network as new clean data. All degradation in received data due to noise on the line, line attenuation or phase shifting shall be eliminated when the data is regenerated. 2.5 GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE: A. The Graphical User Interface shall be PC based and incorporate the very latest in operating system software such as Windows NT multi-tasking operating system. B. It shall provide combined text and graphics display on a single PC using high resolution color SVGA display and use simple operator controls with no qwerty keypad. C. The PC based Graphical User Interface shall use a unique configuration tool GRAB-IT, Graphical, Autocad, Bitmap, Information, Transfer to automatically configure the system such that Installation Plans, device type and location, flood fill areas, flood fill locations, zoom areas, and zoom magnifications shall all be imported from Autocad. D. This configuration tool significantly reduces configuration time, increases the integrity of information and enables simple updates to the system in future / ٨

9 2.6 COMPUTER SPECIFICATIONS: A. Hardware: * Processor: IBM compatible PC with Intel 3.1 GHz Pentium-IV processor on Intel motherboard, upgradeable type. * Memory: 512 kb pipeline burst cache memory, flash bios; 256 MB DD RAM. * Graphic Card: PCI 64-bit 3D super VGA graphic card with 32 MB EDO. * Hard Drive: 40 GB EIDE hard drive. * Floppy Drive: 3.5" floppy drive, 1.44 MB. * CD Drive: 48X CD. * Ports: 2 Serial Ports, one parallel port for printer. * Pointing Device: Bus Mouse. * Keyboard: Microsoft 101-keys English and Arabic keyboard. * Mouse: Microsoft mouse with the necessary drivers and supporting software. * Monitor: 17" flat screen color SVGA monitor, high resolution, non-interlaced, graphic type with display power management. * Network Interface: Fire alarm manufacturer's standard interface board. B. Software: * Windows 2003 (operating system) as well as the related software required for the installation of the operating system / ٩

10 * AutoCAD Lite for generating and editing graphic maps. 2.7 SYSTEM EVENT PRINTER: A. The system printer shall be standard 80 column printer compatible with the system, and shall log all events, change of status, alarm and fault messages along with time of the day and date. The printer shall operate independently of the control unit (FACP) and shall not inhibit the fire controller operation in any way when printing. The printer shall provide the following: - Hard copy of every event occurring - Status read out of every addressable point - Devices tested on a walk test - Contaminated detectors needing replacement - Isolated devices - Single point scan printout of analogue values - Hard copy of historic log 2.8 ADDRESSABLE REPEATER PANEL: A. Repeater panel shall be manufacturer's standard, surface mounted type comprising of following: 1 - General Purpose housing 2 - AC/DC Converter Module (DCCM) Surface 3 - Front Cover Assembly 4.- Built-in Short Circuit Line isolator The front panel of the repeater shall contain the following displays and indicators: * An 80-character backlit LCD alphanumeric display arranged in 4 rows of 20 characters (to display information about the system status and alarms). * A green LED : Power * Two red LED's : Fire * A yellow LED : Fault * A yellow LED : Disabled / ١٠

11 * 80 red LED's : Fire Zones B. Control Panel shall comply with all the applicable requirements of UL 864. Panel shall be modular, installed in a surface mounted steel cabinet with hinged door and cylinder lock. Control panel shall be a clean, uncluttered, and orderly assembled panel containing all components and equipment required to provide the specified operating and supervisory functions of the system. The panel shall have prominent rigid plastic, phenolic or metal identification plates for all lamps, zones, controls, meters, fuses, and switches. Nameplates for fuses shall also include ampere rating. Separate alarm and trouble lamp shall be provided for each zone alarm located on exterior of cabinet door or be visible through the cabinet door. Control panel switches shall be within the locked cabinet. A suitable means shall be provided for testing the control panel visual indicating devices (meters or lamps). Meters and lamps shall be plainly visible when the cabinet door is closed. Signals shall be provided to indicate by zone any alarm, supervisory or trouble condition on the system. Each SLC initiating circuit shall be powered and supervised so that a signal on one zone does not prevent the receipt of signals from other zones. Loss of power, including any or all batteries, shall not require the reloading of a program. Upon restoration of power, startup shall be automatic, and shall not require any manual operation. The loss of primary power or the sequence of applying primary or emergency power shall not affect the transmission of alarm, supervisory or trouble signals. 2.9 FIELD DEVICES: A. General: Fire detecting devices shall comply with the applicable requirements of NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, BS, UL 268, and UL 521 and other Standards mentioned in Clause 1.3. The detectors shall be provided as indicated. Detector base shall have screw terminals for making connections. No solder connections will be allowed. Detectors shall be connected into alarm initiating circuits. Detector bases shall incorporate built-in isolators modules. Detectors located in concealed locations (above ceiling, / ١١

12 etc.) shall have a remote visible indicator lamp. Installed devices shall conform to the classification of the area. Addressable fire detecting devices except flame detectors shall be dynamically supervised and uniquely identified in the control panel. Detectors shall meet the following requirements: - Operating temperature range of 0 o C to + 50 o C - Relative humidity up to 95% - Electro magnetic compatibility to IEC Standard 801 or equivalent - Shock/Impact/Vibration/Corrosion - as per BS 5445 or equivalent standards - Interchangeable plug-in base - Smart card addressing technology - Made of fire resisting material - Enclosure protection shall be to IP 43 or equivalent - Detector shall be wiring polarity independent - Detectors shall include service and maintenance park position B. Analogue Addressable Heat Detectors: Addressable heat detectors shall be designed for detection of fire by combination fixed temperature and rate-of-rise principle. Heat detectors shall be rated for a minimum of 15.2 m spacing (smooth-ceiling rated) in accordance with UL 521 or equivalent. Detectors conforming to BS 5445: Part 5 or equivalent standards. shall initiate an alarm when the air temperature reaches the detector's fixed temperature rating of 60 o C or when the rate-of-rise of element is triggered. Detectors shall be of fully solid construction and require no replacement of parts after each operation and/or testing. Detectors shall have built-in LED alarm indicator. Detectors shall be of plug-in type suitable for common interchangeable base, same as used for smoke detectors. C. Analogue Addressable Optical Smoke & Heat (Combined) Detectors: These shall be of SAFE addressable optical smoke and heat type with in built isolator in a single head. The optical element shall monitor for visible smoke from slow smoldering fires. Smoke sending shall be by pulses / ١٢

13 of infrared beam projected across a dark sensor chamber by the LED emitter. A photodiode receive fitted at an obtuse angle to the IR beam shall normally sense some standing light scatter. When smoke enters the smoke chamber through entry slots around the sensor head, more light shall be scattered towards photodiode receiver thus enabling the microprocessor and measurement circuits on the PCB to pick up the fire threshold. Heat sensing shall be done by the two thermisters in close contact with the mesh which shall prevent foreign bodies entering bodies entering into the sensor chamber and shall serve as an heat sink for the two thermisters to allow even heat dissipation. The sensor shall measure both smoke & heat values combined together at the same time. Smoke & Heat sensing design shall comply to BS 5445 Part 5 & 7 or equivalent Standards, and shall be LPCB approved. All Optical Smoke & Heat combined shall comprise of three components: Termination Plate, Electronics Module and a replaceable sensor chamber. The termination plate shall incorporate the terminals for wiring only and shall not contain any electronic parts. The electronic module shall plug onto the termination plate as second fix item. It shall have microprocessors, short-circuit isolators and all electronic components and circuitry suitable for an Analogue addressable system. The sensing chamber shall fit on the electronics module as a third fix item. This design shall allow sensing element alone to be replaced, should be become dirty due to a build up of dust from the surrounding atmosphere. When removed, the panel shall display a fault condition with a message Sensor chamber Removed with a relevant label/address. The sensor chamber shall also have 360 degree viewing LED indicator. Sensors mounted in the ceiling shall be provided with semi-flush mounting kit. D. Analogue Addressable High Performance Optical Smoke / ١٣

14 Detectors: Ceiling-mounted type detectors shall be pluggable type, nominal 24 VDC operation. Detector shall have solid state circuitry and LED visual alarm indicator. Detector shall react to whole range of fires including slow smoldering fire and open flaming fire. Detector shall combine the optical and heat detection technology to detect clear burning fires and having high immunity to false alarm. For normal ambient conditions the high performance optical detector behaves as an optical detector of normal sensitivity. The sensitivity of the optical array system of detector is increased upon rise in temperature resulting in enhanced early response of fire condition. E. Analogue Addressable Duct Detectors: Duct detectors are to be intelligent analogue addressable, loop powered, loop signaled with built-in short circuit isolator, housing the optical smoke & heat (combined) detector specified earlier. Detector is to made of high impact plastic with a clear cover for easy viewing of the polling and alarm LED s. Two sampling tubes are to be provided and installed in the duct. Gaskets are to prevent air leakage. For each duct detector a separate alarm and test stations are to be provided. F. Addressable Manual Fire Alarm Stations: Manual fire alarm stations shall conform to the applicable requirements of BS 5938: Part 2 or equivalent standards. The manual call point shall be break glass type suitable for operation with addressable system. Manual station shall be with polycarbonate cover, bright red finish, with built-in short circuit isolator, built-in microprocessor, normally open switch contact, and shall be suitable for surface-mounted installation. It shall be possible to test the call point without the need to break the glass by insertion of a special test key. G. Alarm Bells: General alarm bells shall be of motorized type, 150 mm diameter, 24V DC. Bells shall be suitable for / ١٤

15 installation over standard 1 gang back box. Bells shall be finished red. External bells, if required, shall be weatherproof. H. Alarm Sounder: Multipurpose loop powered electronic sounder with 3 programmable signals, 180 mm dia. shall be conforming to LPCB, BS 5839 Part 1 or equivalent Standards with sound output of minimum 98 dba at 1 meter distance, adjustable volume levels and ingress protection of IP30. External sounders, if required, shall be weatherproof. I. Addressable Ancillary Modules 2.10 BATTERIES: 1. A full range of ancillary modules shall be provided to allow greater flexibility in system design: 2. Addressable Relay Module: It shall provide clean changeover contact and shall be used on the address loops and used for remote plant shutdown, controlling door release units, stoppage of extract fans, interface control of elevators, etc. 3. Addressable Detector Interface Module: This addressable module shall interface conventional fire detection circuits on the address loops, where required. 4. Addressable Sounder Driver Module: The output module shall be connected on to the address loops to provide greater system flexibility and provide monitored output drive for zonal/sector sounder(s). 5. Line Isolator Module: The line isolator module shall protect the loop circuit in the event of a short circuit condition by isolating the relevant section on the loop between two isolator units. 6. Addressable Contact Monitoring Module: The module shall be used to monitor status of sprinkler system water flow switches and transfer switches. A. Batteries shall be provided and shall be the sealed, lead-acid type requiring no additional water. The batteries shall have ample capacity, with primary power disconnected, to operate the fire alarm system for a period / ١٥

16 of 48 hours. Following this period of operation via batteries, the batteries shall have ample capacity to operate all components of the system, including all alarm signaling devices in the total alarm mode for a minimum period of 15 minutes. Batteries shall be sized to deliver 50 percent more ampere/hours based on a 48 hour discharged rate than required for the calculated capacities. Battery cabinet shall be a separate cabinet. Battery shall be provided with overcurrent protection in accordance with NFPA BATTERY CHARGER: A. Battery charger shall be completely automatic, with high/low charging rate, capable of restoring the batteries from full discharge to full charge within 12 hours. A separate ammeter shall be provided for indicating rate of charge. A separate voltmeter shall be provided to indicate the state of the battery charge. A pilot light indicating when batteries are manually placed on a high rate of charge shall be provided as part of the unit assembly if a high rate switch is provided. Charger shall be located in control panel or battery cabinet WIRING: A. Wiring for loop circuit shall be twisted shielded 1 pair cable, Belden 1030A or equivalent. B. Network communication cable shall be 1 pair computer cable, Belden 9841 or equivalent RACEWAYS: A. Refer to Section BASIC MATERIALS AND METHOD. PART 3 - EXECUTION / ١٦

17 3.1 SYSTEM OPERATION: A. System shall provide zoning of alarm initiating devices and double stage of audible alarm. B. System shall accept alarm initiation from manual stations, heat detectors, ionization detectors, etc. C. The alarm zones shall be indicated on the control panel. 3.2 INSTALLATION: A. The entire fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with BS and NFPA Standards and manufacturer's approved shop drawings, written instructions and recommendations. 3.3 WIRING METHODS: A. All materials and methods shall conform to the requirements of Section BASIC MATERIALS AND METHOD. 3.4 TESTING: A. Fire Alarm System shall be tested and put into operation by the manufacturer or his authorized representative in the presence of Engineer. Fault and alarm conditions shall be simulated, and all data and alarm indicators checked with full events recorded on system printer. END OF SECTION / ١٧
