KEEP AWAY FROM FOOD, DRINK AND ANIMAL FEEDING STUFFS. PROTECT FROM FROST. KEEP IN ORIGINAL CONTAINER, tightly closed, in a safe place. Do not mix, store or apply ETNA in galvanised or unlined mild steel containers or spray tanks. Wash out container thoroughly, empty washings into spray tank and dispose of empty container safely. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: IMPORTANT: This information is approved as part of the Product Label. All instructions within this section must be read carefully in order to obtain safe and successful use of this product. ETNA is a non-selective foliar-acting herbicide with broad-spectrum activity. It is translocated from treated green growth to underground roots, rhizomes and stolons, providing control of both annual and perennial weeds. In soil it has no residual herbicidal properties. The product can be applied as an overall spray or as a directed spray using a knapsack sprayer or a rotary atomizer. When using as a directed spray in Forestry, the use of a protective nozzle hood (tree guard) is essential for all applications made in the growing season. RESISTANCE Strains of some annual grasses, e.g. black-grass, wild-oats, and Italian rye-grass, have developed resistance to herbicides which may lead to poor control. A strategy for preventing and managing such resistance should be adopted. Guidelines have been produced by the Weed Resistance Action Group and copies are available from the HGCA, CPA, your distributor, crop adviser or product manufacturer. RESTRICTIONS Poor control is likely where growth is impaired by natural senescence, drought, high temperature, a covering of dust, flooding or severe/ prolonged frost at, or immediately after application. Do not apply ETNA under these conditions. A rain-free period of at least 6 hours, but preferably 24 hours should follow application. The product should not be used if a prolonged period of frost is expected or if there is a chance of rain within 6 hours after application. Weeds should preferably be dry at the time of application, as weed control may be reduced if run-off occurs. After application, large concentrations of decaying foliage, stolons, roots or rhizomes should be dispersed or buried by thorough cultivation before drilling. Page 3/
4 Applications of lime, fertiliser, farmyard manure and pesticides should be delayed until 5 days after application of ETNA. EXTREME CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO AVOID SPRAY DRIFT. Traces of this product can severely damage or destroy nearby non-target plants. The product must therefore be applied very carefully and a medium to coarse drop-size (BCPC classification) should be used. Do not spray in windy conditions as drift onto desired plants or crops or vegetation can severely damage or destroy them. WEEDS CONTROLLED ETNA should be applied on emerged grasses and broad-leaved weeds and when they have actively growing green leaves. It is however important that weeds are treated at the correct growth stage, as re-growth may occur for weeds which are not fully controlled. An additional treatment will then be required. - Annual grasses and broad-leaved weeds should have at least 5 cm of leaf, or 2 expanded true leaves, respectively. In established vegetation, annual grasses are best treated before stem elongation or at full ear emergence. Application during stem extension may result in poor control, and require re-treatment. - Perennial grasses must have full emergence of healthy, green leaf. - Perennial broad-leaved weeds are most susceptible around the flowering stage. - Bracken should be treated after frond tips are unfurled, but pre- senescence. - Horsetails (Equisetum arvense) will not be adequately controlled. Repeat treatments will be necessary. Please refer to the Crop specific information for further details. CROP SPECIFIC INFORMATION Pre-harvest application of winter and spring wheat, durum wheat, winter and spring barley and winter and spring oats ETNA can be used for the control of present weeds or to facilitate harvest on fully ripened cereals. The grain moisture must not exceed 30 % at the time of application. Treat heather late August to late September. Page 9/
10 Use with a knapsack sprayer at L/ha OR with a Weed wiper mini at 1 part ETNA to 2 parts water (See Mixing & Spraying section for further information). Stump application: Apply the solution to saturate the rim of the newly cut surface, with a suitable adapted clearing saw, spot gun or paint brush. Treat as soon as possible after felling (within 1 week), in the period November to March. Do not apply in the period of active sap flow in spring/early summer. Do not cut notches or drill holes and fill with the solution, or use undiluted product. - For deciduous trees: apply at 100 ml/l of water (10% solution of ETNA in water); - For coniferous trees: apply at 200 ml/l of water (20% solution of ETNA in water). A suitable water soluble dye may be added to the prepared solution, to aid identification of treated tree stumps. Chemical thinning by injection of tree stems (Coniferous and deciduous trees) Use a hatchet to cut one notch in trees up to 10cm diameter, and apply 2ml ETNA (undiluted) to each cut. Use 2 or 3 notches in trees over 10cm diameter. Do not treat in the period of active sap flow in spring/early summer. Amenity vegetation For weed control in areas of semi-natural or ornamental vegetation, including areas of bare soil around trees and ornamental plants, or areas intended for ornamental planting. For the control of present weeds. Apply when weeds have fully emerged. Do not use under polythene or glass. Do not use in or alongside hedgerows. - For the control of annual weeds: apply at 1.5 L/ha. - For the control of perennial grasses: apply at 4.0 L/ha. - For the control of perennial broad-leaved weeds: apply at 5.0 L/ha. Apply in L/ha. Rotary atomizers may be used at a minimum spray volume of 40 L/ha. Ensure droplet The product can also be applied with hand-held equipment. Please refer to the section Mixing and spraying for further information. FOLLOWING CROPS When the product is applied on well developed vegetation (organic mass), it is important that the following crop does not come in contact with the dying mass. The dying vegetation should be buried by invert ploughing. This vegetation should have sufficient time to decompose before a following crop is planted or sown. MIXING AND SPRAYING DO NOT mix, store or apply ETNA in galvanised or unlined steel containers or spray tanks. For tractor powered sprayers, half fill the spray tank with water, start gentle agitation, add the correct amount of ETNA and top up the tank to the required volume, whilst maintaining agitation. To prevent foaming, make sure the filling hose is kept below the fluid level. On emptying the container, RINSE CONTAINER THOROUGHLY by using an integrated pressure rinsing device or manually rinsing three times. Add washings to sprayer at time of filling and dispose of container safely. Continue agitating during application. If necessary, a suitable anti-foaming agent can be added to reduce foaming. Page 10/
11 ETNA can be applied using tractor mounted, knapsack, rotary atomizers and hand-held sprayers. All hydraulic applications, including knapsacks, must have MEDIUM or COARSE spray quality (in accordance with the BCPC definition). For tractor mounted boom sprayers use a spray volume of L/ha and a Medium or Coarse spray (BCPC classification), as indicated in the section Crop specific information. For knapsack sprayers the recommended water volume is L/ha. Spray dilutions should be used according to the equipment used. Hand-held rotary atomizers can be used to apply a spray volume of 40 L/ha. Ensure that the droplet diameter falls within the range of µm for all uses. For weed wipers mini use a concentration of 1 part ETNA to 2 parts of water; for other weed-wipers use 1 part ETNA to 1 part of water. A water-soluble dye can be added if required. DO NOT leave diluted spray solution in the spray tank for long periods, and make sure tanks are well vented. At the end of spraying wash sprayer tank, pump and hoses thoroughly with water and liquid detergent and empty completely. Traces of ETNA left in the equipment may seriously damage or destroy crops sprayed later. CONDITIONS OF SUPPLY All goods supplied by us are of high grade and suitable for use.
