Stop Phytophthora robbing your nursery Andrew Wilson Technical Manager Everris

Summary Introduction Phytophthora, the disease Phytophthora on the Nursery PlantTrust Concept and Development PlantTrust Grower Trials Questions

The Disease Phytophthora root rot of container plants Caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi A highly destructive, invasive plant pathogen Lives in soil & moves in water to invade plant issue

Phytophthora challenges profitability

Phytophthora disease cycle

Phytophthora can destroy an entire crop!

Phytophthora unchecked 2,4 kg / m3 Untreated natural infection Chamaecyparis Minima Aurea

Wide host range

. 10% of Phytophthora susceptible plants are lost Crop type Value of crop/pot Number 3litre pots/m3 growing media Value of crop to grower 10% loss Low value crop 2.50/pot 333 pots Medium value crop 4.00/pot 333 pots High value crop 6.00/pot 333 pots Growers of Phytophthora susceptible crops lose on average 10% of plants equating to 80 to 200 worth of plants grown per cubic metre of growing media.

Causes of Phytophthora contamination Water Flash Floods causing waterlogging

Causes of Phytophthora contamination Soils & Growing media Poor drainage

Causes of Phytophthora contamination Work surfaces including Danish Trollies / Shelves R&D Contamination of Danish Trolleys HDC project found Phytophthora/ Pythium on trolley shelves which are not cleaned down when exchanged. The problem of disease spread is accentuated by overwatering the top shelves of full trolleys resulting in water running down through liners and finished plants on lower shelves.

Causes of Phytophthora contamination Growing beds under protection and outdoor HDC/HNS Conducted by Dr Tim Petitt now Eden Project found disease in areas where irrigation water remained after overhead irrigation. By means of Swab Tests he demonstrated that Phytophthora species was present. Ponding of water on the standing beds equals invasion by Phytophthora /Pythium spp. This revealed a real hidden danger on setting down containers on Protected and Outdoor Nursery container beds.

Nursery Beds the hidden danger

Phytophthora treatments used by growers Chemical and biological products can be used on the crop. Many of these require repeated application and are costly in terms of labour to apply. Many of these products are disappearing In many cases these products are not targeted to the developing root system. There is a danger of the product not being active when under disease pressure.

Container Nursery Crops which are at risk of root rot Acer; Choisya ; Most Conifers ; Cordyline ; Escallonia; Euphorbia, Eucalyptus; Fagus; Fremontodendron; Gaultheria Hebe; Helleborus; Helicrysum Juniperus; Lavandula ; Malus; Olearia; Prunus; Pittosporium ; Ribes ; Rhododendron inc Azalea; Rosmarinus; Syringa; Taxus; Viburnum Plus many more.

PlantTrust Development 7 Years of development 103 trials (2004 to 2009) at research stations in 6 European Countries 2010 Onwards Extensive grower trials carried out in UK and Europe

PlantTrust is based on the CRC technology: Controlled Release coating system Control Release Control Technology Coating Active Ingredient 1-3 mm Fertilizer core

CRC Technology Controlled Release Control Constant and Complete release of a.i

PlantTrust release utilises CRC Technology

Plant Trust contains both a controlled release fertilizer and a fungicide (fosetyl-aluminium). Plant Trust should be incorporated into the growing media at potting Plant Trust provides long lasting protection against Phytophthora root-rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi) infection.

Plant Trust provides easier protection

It s all about roots and Plant health Standard Treatment Healthy Roots Root loss

How to get the best protection against Phytophthora

How to get the best protection against Phytophthora Use preventive measures Test for Phytophthora Incorporate PlantTrust into growing Media
