Saturday, December 4 is the Dogwood Arts Festival's official dogwood tree-planting day. This is the time when dogwood trees are going dormant and sap production is slowing down. Casey and Abbey Howard fundraising for school and care for your trees will be provided. Although it s still October, now is a good time to think about where you could add dogwoods to your landscape. Dogwoods are understory trees, meaning they will be happiest in at least partial shade. It s also important to protect dogwoods from lawnmowers and string trimmers, because injury to the tree s bark makes it much more susceptible to disease; planting trees in a mulched bed is ideal for this reason. Dogwood anthracnose is caused by a fungus that thrives in rainy, cool spring weather. If you plant your dogwood in a location that gets morning sun and good air circulation, it is much less likely to succumb to this disease. Dogwoods are shallow rooted and benefit greatly from extra water in times of drought. Village Green will be hosting the first Free to Breath 5K run this October. The event organizers are looking for neighborhood volunteers to assist in directing the runners and to man water stations.

2 Village Green will be hosting the first Free to Breath 5K run this October. The event organizers are looking for neighborhood volunteers to assist in directing the runners and to man water stations. The water, cups, and tables will be provided. Those interested in volunteering should contact Cindy Pack at (865) or Event registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. on October 16th on Jamestowne Boulevard. Walkers will begin the 1 mile course at 8:15 a.m. and runners will begin at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the National Lung Cancer Partnership's research, education, and awareness programs. Each individual Village Green will be working with Envirotexx to bring a discounted leaf-vacuuming service to residents this fall and winter. Envirotexx is willing to drop its normal rate of $50/hour to $35/hour if enough Free to Breath 5K Run who raises $1,500 or more for the National Lung Cancer Partnership will receive a fundraising incentive. Leaf Removal residents sign up and pre-pay. To get this group discount, we ll need 75 households to commit by October 31 st. This is also typically one of our driest months, so it s important to keep everything well watered until we get into the cooler weather and, hopefully, more abundant rainfall of November. Another important task for October is lawn care. Fescue is a cool-season grass, so if you have a fescue lawn, now is the time to aerate and fertilize. This is also the best time to overseed the bare spots that may have appeared during the dry summer. One way you can fertilize and condition your lawn s soil is to mulch your falling leaves directly into the soil, by simply running over them with your lawn mower. Fall Gardening Tips This is a great time to compost or mulch leaves, add mulch to flower beds, and pull weeds. One last effort at weeding this month can prevent thousands of new weeds from popping up in the spring. And late October/early November is the ideal time to plant spring-blooming bulbs. Bonfire Everybody's favorite neighborhood event is almost here. The Fall Bonfire is at 6 p.m. on October the 9 th at the Clubhouse. Come enjoy great food For extra cool-season color, you may also want to plant some fall perennials and winter annuals. Colorful fall perennials include mums, muhly grass, fountain grasses, Sedum Autum Joy, and Sedum rupestre Angelina, a chartreuse-colored ground cover that turns orange and plum colors during the winter months. A number of winter annuals will survive a typical Knoxville winter and then perk up as soon as we get warmer weather in early spring. Some examples are: pansies, violas, ornamental cabbage, Dianthus chinensis, snapdragons, and winter greens such as kale and giant red mustard. You may want to plant your bulbs amongst these winter annuals. Blue pansies against yellow daffodils or orange tulips are particularly striking in the spring. There are a number of edibles that will also thrive in the cool weather. They can be planted in a vegetable garden, of course, but many look beautiful tucked in with other winter annuals in your flower beds. Some examples are: curly-leaf parsley, chives, Swiss chard, cool-season lettuces, peas, radicchio, spinach, radishes, and carrots. and fun with fellow residents. Dinner and drinks will be provided. Residents are asked to bring a dessert to share.

3 This summer has been a busy time for the moving vans in Village Green. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new neighbors. Brent and Keri Watts ( ) moved into Georgetown Drive with their 8 month old son, Andrew. Joe Benn and Joan Arney ( ) now reside at North Monticello Drive with their son Jarin. Welcome Erin and Shaun Morgan moved in at 105 Chancellors Lane with their 3 year old daughter, Samantha. Tim and Maria Finnegan ( ) have moved into 521 Old Tavern Circle with their sons, Ty and Lukc (6 and 4) and their almost 2 year old daughter, Lydia. Finally Maria Klard ( ) is now living at 101 Jamestowne Blvd. Condolences Bill Kongsli, a resident of Village Green for 32 years, died on September 14, We would like to extend our condolences to his wife, Sue. Found A blonde-colored stuffed dog toy was found on Weathervane Drive. It s wearing a red kerchief, has a Children s Miracle Network tag, and says Josh. If this belongs to you, please call The Village Green Board has several members whose term will be complete at the end of the year, meaning we have several positions that need to be filled in January We will need an Assessments Officer who will be responsible for notifying residents of and collecting annual VGHA dues. We will need a Pool Co-Chair who shares responsibility for maintaining the pools and oversees the pool staff. We will need a Social Chair who Board Positions is responsible for organizing neighborhood events, and we need a Clubhouse Chair who will be responsible for maintenance and scheduling of the Clubhouse. We also need a new Vice- President who will become President the following year. All board members attend monthly meetings to vote on neighborhood business, and all members have a two year term. Any resident who has lived in the neighborhood for any length of time may be nominated to become a board member. Board elections will be held at the VGHA meeting in January. Auditor Needed Village Green is seeking a qualified individual to perform the external audit for fiscal years 2007, 2008 and Qualifications for applying for this position include either a CPA or prior audit experience. Other attractions include a roaring fire, roasted marshmallows, hot chocolate, and catering by Buddy s BBQ. Village Green Garden Club The Village Green Garden Club will take a trip to Ijam s Nature Center to hear Kara Remington speak about Living with Urban Wildlife. Any VG Resident wishing to participate should bring a bag lunch to the Clubhouse at 10 a.m. Garden Club members will carpool from there. Free to Breath 5K Run Village Green will be hosting a 5k run to help fight lung cancer. See page 2 for details. Village Green Book Club The Village Green Book Club will be meeting to discuss One Day by David Nichols. The meeting will be hosted by Lynn Oglesby at the clubhouse and will begin at 7 p.m. All Village Green residents are welcome to attend. Village Green Garden Club The Village Green Garden Club will be meeting at 10 a.m. in the Clubhouse. They will work on holiday decorations and hear Master Gardener Terry Leese talk about making your garden Winter Ready. Village Green Book Club The Village Green Book Club will be meeting to discuss Blood Root by Amy Greene. The meeting will be hosted by Courtney Rima at the Clubhouse and will begin at 7 p.m. All Village Green residents are welcome to attend.
