2 Power and performance in combination Cultus Cultus opens up new possibilities. With Cultus on the farm, soil cultivation is more powerful and work is a sheer pleasure. Cultus has quickly established itself as a spearhead in soil cultivation powerful, durable and efficient at one and the same time. It is suitable for all soil types through the options available to flexibly equip and use the cultivator at different depths and working widths, making Cultus a sure-fire winner. Impressive work Simplicity and performance were the keywords during the research and development phase. Cultus is easy to adjust and the final results in the field are extremely convincing. It does magnificent work in stubble tillage and incorporation of harvest trash throughout the entire soil after harvesting. It is equally good for a second cultivation some time after a quick Carrier pass or for seedbed preparation in spring on autumn-ploughed soil. Always reliable The future will bring changes in crop production. The economy will continue to rise and fall and its fluctuations will probably be more extreme and more frequent than before. 4 Flexible and adaptable Flexibility is a must in soil cultivation. Almost no other activity requires such a feeling for weather, moisture, soil type and harvest trash. Cultus shows its strength here, with a range of options and equipment for all soil types. A width for every farm Cultus is available in working widths from 3 to 6.2 metres, so there is a Cultus for small, medium and large farms. The horsepower available determines the choice of working width. The smallest model has a draught requirement from 90 and the medium hp, while the largest requires at least 310 hp. Ploughed or ploughless Stubble cultivation is a primary area of work for Cultus, as is deep cultivation and mechanical weed control. For example after sugarbeet harvest, when the soil is compacted, Cultus does a fantastic job of loosening before wheat drilling. A shallow Cultus pass directly after the combine harvester mixes harvest trash efficiently into the soil for rapid decomposition and to rapidly make weeds and volunteers to germinate. Cultus also does an excellent job of seedbed preparation in spring. Driving diagonally across the previous cultivation pass maximises the levelling effect. Working depth can be varied Working depth can easily be varied according to requirements. It is set hydraulically from the cab on the trailed Cultus models and can be changed on the go. For best results, everything must be done on exactly the right day timing is everything. If everything goes smoothly, time is not a problem. However, modern cropping is often carried out within very narrow time margins. There is almost always a lack of time and there is little leeway. Half the days available in the calendar for field work can suddenly disappear due to unfavourable weather. In such circumstances, it is essential to have the capacity available when the right time comes. Cultus has that capacity. An entire working week The diagram above clearly shows what speed and width can do to increase the performance of Cultus. A Cultus 300 driven at 6 km/hour covers around ha/hour. However, if the same Cultus can be driven at 12 km/hour, the work rate doubles to 2.7 ha/hour. On an area of 100 hectares, the difference is almost 40 hours, or an entire working week in the tractor cab. Going up in size to a Cultus 620 gives a corresponding increase but at a higher level. For example, at 6 km/hour a Cultus 620 covers around 2.8 ha/hour while at 12 km/hour it achieves as much as 5.6 ha/hour. This is an important difference when there is rain in the air. Simple equation The equation is simple. The capacity is decided by the speed and working width of the machine. There must be sufficient horsepower available for draught and sufficient working width for scope. The faster and wider the machine, the more hectares it can complete within a certain time. The farmer himself decides how much the capacity should cost. A larger tractor or a wider machine adds cost, but this must be weighed against getting the right things done at the right time, e.g. drilling on the right day and thus laying the foundations for a high yield. Another important aspect in choice of Cultus working width for the tractor available is that the work results improve with increased working speed our recommendation is at least 10 km/hour. Important in the long term The aim of cutting minutes in the field can appear unimportant in an individual year. However, in the long term all the evidence indicates that decreasing production costs is the foundation for a successful business. High productivity makes the difference between income and costs a positive value, and this is an area where Cultus can make a great difference. 5

6 Impressive quality Quality is the hallmark of all Väderstad machines. The most important feature of Cultus is naturally quality of soil cultivation, but other important aspects include quality of material, features, construction and long life. Cultus is widely acknowledged for its efficiency in soil cultivation and incorporation of harvest trash at both low and high speeds. Cultus leaves behind a well-levelled surface ready for the seed drill. The work results, the robust design and the simple handling are impressive. Equally impressive is the quality of individual features on Cultus, which gives long life and keeps the maintenance costs low. Durable frame The main frame of Cultus is manufactured from square profile steel with dimensions of 100 x 100 x 10 mm. On the larger Cultus models, 200 x 100 x 10 mm steel profile is also included to provide a durability that can withstand stresses and many hectares of tough driving. The frame is made from high quality steel and the fully welded frame construction is designed for maximum resistance to torsion. Computer simulations were used to show how the force pattern is distributed through the frame and the frame structure was then designed for maximum durability. Quality & Economics Extensive testing Our R&D department carried out extensive testing of many versions of tine and spring before they found the optimum solution. The lifetime of the springs was tested through tens of thousands of impacts in a fatigue test rig and the springs themselves were put through their paces on countless hectares in the field before being released onto the market. Stone release The tine has a release pressure of 450 kp. On impact with a stone, the tine exerts the same force in the soil until it eventually trips up, to a maximum of 30 cm. It then springs back instantly 6

7 once the obstacle has been passed, and proceeds working. Double spring There is a double spring system on Cultus tines, with an extra inner spring for a more compact and secure construction. This double spring is stronger and has a higher release force and longer lifetime than a single spring. Stable mounting The tine mounting is firmly welded to the frame for stability and durability. For stable and secure mounting, the tine leg is attached with an ingenious construction based on a sleeve with conical ends, against which two concave cartridges are tightened by a bolt. Regardless of wear, this connection never loosens, wear can be monitored and the sleeve can easily be replaced. Marathon lasts longer Cultus can be equipped with four different points, with 80 mm being the most common option. Both this point and the wing blade are now also available in optional Marathon form, where they are reinforced with a wearing surface of hard metal (wolfram carbide) for substantially longer life. 450 kp 30 cm 7

On large models, Cultus , the large support wheels (400/60x15.5) produce a stable ride at high driving speeds. Exact working depth The cultivation depth can be set hydraulically from the driving seat and can also be adjusted on the go. Thanks to a master-and-slave system, the working depth is regulated simultaneously on both support wheels and packer roller, and therefore always occurs parallel to the soil. This means that Cultus maintains an exact working depth even on undulating land. On the smaller models the working depth is set with clips. Tight turning circle Cultus is available as mounted, or with either linkage drawbar or trailer drawbar. When the drawbar is attached to the lifting arms the turning circle is small, which gives good manoeuvrability on headlands. Spacious frame construction The three or four axles are each 80 cm apart and have a tine distribution of cm depending on Cultus model. The machine is spacious and has a frame height of 85 cm, which means that it allows large amounts of soil and plant residues to flow through. A 5th bonus axle Cultus has a unique solution whereby two tines are moved forward onto a fifth bonus axle. The machine thereby allows very good throughflow of plant residues and has a minimal risk of stoppages, even in wet conditions. Effective levelling The large levelling discs leave a smooth working surface. These levelling discs have greaseless bearings so as to minimise maintenance. After harvesting in the autumn, when Cultus is most often used, good reconsolidation is the key to encouraging volunteer seeds to germinate, since it saves soil moisture. 10 Intensive cultivation Cultus Cobra tine The Cultus Cobra tine is the result of intensive development work. Through the shape and curvature of the tine, the soil flow is directed upwards along the tine face. The point breaks up the soil, which is transported freely upwards until the flow of soil is broken up into a cascade of finely mixed soil and plant residues. MixIn shin increases the degree of action The MixIn shin is standard on Cultus. Its curved shape makes it a phenomenal soil cultivator. The soil is thrown forwards in a circular motion and further mixed once more when it lands as the tine reaches it and throws it up again. This means that a single pass with Cultus actually gives a double cultivation effect. This is also the reason why Cultus is so good at drawing out rows of straw during stubble cultivation after the combine harvester and so effective at transporting plant material forwards. It deflects the flow of soil obliquely and incorporates plant residues. 10

11 A B Folding tine Cultus can be equipped with folding tines that allow the machine to cultivate the soil deeper with the same tractor, e.g. through folding up the two outer tines on each side (A). Cultus can also be used to cultivate with a wider tine distribution by folding up alternate tines (B). Narrow or wide point Cultus can be equipped with four different points from 50 to 210 mm width. The narrowest is suitable for breaking up hard layers at depth, while the 210 mm arrowhead point is intended for shallower work. The intermediate point sizes are 80 and 120 mm, with the 80 mm point as standard. With the 80 mm tip the soil profile is completely tilled when cultivating shallow. Broad wing blades With 129 mm wing blades mounted on each side of the point, the cultivated area is extended to full width. The wing blades raise the soil and slice off weeds. They can be mounted on 80 and 120 mm points. Two-piece point decreases part replacement costs The point section of each Cultus tine is divided into a point and a shin. When the point is worn out it is easy to replace, whereas the shin has more to give and can be left in place for longer. This decreases the part replacement costs. 11

12 Thorough soil reconsolidation Cultus mixes plant residues effectively into the entire topsoil. The packer roller reconsolidates the soil and leaves a level and fine-textured surface. Reconsolidation is important in getting weeds and volunteer seeds to germinate, and in creating good contact between straw and soil for faster decomposition. Rubber roller The 800 mm diameter rubber roller (600 mm for Cultus ) gives good reconsolidation and is suitable for most conditions. On light soils the rubber roller is completely superior thanks to its large diameter. The rubber roller has very low inertia and any risk of soil drag is practically eliminated. It has a high resistance to wear and has been tested during 6000 km of road transport. Soil reconsolidation Steel roller The steel roller (600 mm diameter on Cultus ) is the alternative when more aggressive reconsolidation is required, for example on heavier soils. The steel roller can work in wet conditions and has a good ability to run cleanly. The steel roller rings are manufactured from hardened special steel for long life. The profile of the steel rollers exerts a slicing and tilling action on plant residues and soil clods. Cage roller The caged roller provides good consolidation in combination with good carrying capacity. The roller is recommended for relatively stone-free soils. The large 550 mm diameter of the caged roller gives it good performance on light soils. 12

13 Effective levelling Cultus is equipped with rotating levelling discs in hard-wearing steel. The result is a level soil surface that is reconsolidated by the packer roller. The working depth is set steplessly with the help of crank handles. Since the levelling discs are controlled by the packer roller, the setting does not need to be changed for minor adjustments of the working depth. Durable rubber mountings The levelling discs are attached to the frame by durable rubber mountings which give every individual disc an impressively long life by absorbing impacts and vibrations in stony soil. Tine levellers On Cultus , tine levellers are an alternative to the levelling discs. These tine levellers have a simpler construction and work well on light soil with only a small amount of plant residues. Suspended scrapers The ingenious and responsive scrapers swing from their mountings, which allows them to keep the rollers clean even in tough and difficult conditions. Adjustable arms with similarly adjustable wearing parts designed to match the contours of the roller rings mean that any soil and harvest trash that stick to the roller can be efficiently removed. 13

16 Cultus Performance and reliability Cultus The large Cultus models ranges from 4.2 to 6.2 metre working width, and can be equipped according to requirements Working width, the linkage between implement and tractor and the type of packer roller make up the basic character of the Cultus. Choice of tine points, wing blades, shins and other options then gives Cultus a conformation that suits the existing requirements. Frame height 85 cm Cultus has four axles plus a fifth bonus axle on the drawbar for maximum space. The frame height is 85 cm. Together, these measurements provide an unusually spacious construction that allows soil and harvest trash to be mixed together and passed through the machine. Large amounts of straw cause no problems for Cultus. Tine spacing 20 cm A closer tine distribution gives more thoroughly cultivated soil, while a wider distribution leaves a certain area uncultivated between the tines. The number of passes then determines the actual area and volume cultivated. Cultus 420 has a tine distribution of 22 cm, while the larger Cultus models have 20 cm. Draught requirement For Cultus , around 60 hp per metre working width is recommended as the optimal draught requirement. For Cultus 420, which has a 22 cm tine distribution, the draught requirement is a bit lower. An important aspect to consider in choice of working width for tractor size is that the higher the driving speed, the better the work results. MixIn and folding tine The MixIn shin is standard on all models, while the folding tines are optional. They provide the potential to vary draught requirement, working width and tine distribution in order to match soil cultivation method to conditions in the field. 16

17 Working depth set from the cab Maximum working depth for Cultus extends to 25 cm, but the machine also works very well at shallow cultivation. The optimal working depth is normally cm. On Cultus the working depth is set hydraulically from the cab on the go. Trials with seedbox Establishment of winter rape using a BioDrill on Cultus has been tested in recent years. The trials and demonstrations have gone well and the results appear promising. Evaluation of the project is now underway. 17

18 Cultus Powerful and responsive The smaller Cultus models are mainly based on the same components as the larger Cultus series. The smaller Cultus models have three axles, 30 cm tine distribution and the same strong and effective Cultus tines. Cultus is available in both hydraulically mounted and trailed models. Cultus 400 is only available as trailed. The trailed model is created by simply mounting a drawbar on the hydraulically mounted machine. The MixIn shin is standard on all models. Working depth set with clips On Cultus the working depth is set with clips on a cylinder in the centre of the machine. The same points and wing blades as on the large models can be mounted on the tine. Draught requirement Cultus has three axles and a tine distribution of 30 cm. The three axles are placed 80 cm apart and the distance between the tines on each axle is 90 cm for maximum throughflow. The machine requires around 35 hp/m working width and is suitable for hp tractor size. Cultus Rubber and steel roller The trailed model is transported on its roller, so the rubber roller is supplied as standard. The rubber roller gives good reconsolidation and uniform results. It also gives the machine a stable and safe ride in transport. On the hydraulically carried model, both the cage roller, the steel roller and the rubber roller are available as standard. 18

21 Hundreds of hectares of winter rape During autumn 2008, many hundred hectares of winter rape were established in Sweden and England using a seedbox mounted on a Cultus 350. A trial with different rape establishment techiques (R2-4143) was drilled in Sweden during Drilling with a cultivator is one of the tested techniques, and the results so far are very promising, regardless of cultivation depth. 21

22 Two cultivations in one pass Farmers experiences Straw incorporation and depth control are two good reasons for the Gisselfeld estate in Denmark to invest in a Cultus 500. However, manager Kim Lundby is most impressed by the MixIn-shins on the Cultus Cobra tines. The shins mean that the soil is cultivated twice in a single pass. Cultus best in test This story began in autumn 2007, when the Gisselfeld estate tested Cultus on its home ground. We were impressed because it did such a good job, explained Kim Lundby, who is manager of the estate and responsible for farming operations. Cultus was not the only machine involved in the test drives in autumn 2007, as other cultivators were also put through their paces in the field. The combination of Cultus cultivation results and Väderstad s machine quality made the decision for us, concluded Kim Lundby. Straw incorporation Straw incorporation is the feature that has most impressed Kim Lundby at the end of the first autumn season. Some winter wheat yielded up to 12 tonnes per hectare in 2008 and high grain yields give rise to large amounts of straw that has to be mixed into the soil. But the cultivator has done a fantastic job with straw incorporation. After winter rye, they only needed two passes with their new Cultus to mix in the straw. The estate s Rapid with Crossboard and two rows of cultivator tines in the toolbar was able to establish a new winter rye crop without straw causing any problem in the tines. Cultus passed the toughest straw test with distinction. Shin gives two cultivations Other aspects that impress Kim Lundby are the depth control and the range of possible variations of Cultus. The depth control is excellent, so we can work at shallow depths at the surface or down to 25 cm with the same machine. However, deep cultivation uses diesel and demands horsepower and makes Cultus hard to run, according to Kim Lundby, although he doesn t blame the machine for this. It s not the fault of the cultivator that we want to work to depth occasionally when we need to loo- 22

23 sen the soil and mix in harvest trash. Whatever the task, work has to be fast at Gisselfeld. Since Cultus can race onwards at over 12 km/hour, cultivation is even better and the shins above the cultivator tines come into their own. The shins mean that the soil is cultivated twice in a single pass. The soil is thrown upwards and forwards, and is then cultivated a second time, explained Kim Lundby, making a circular movement through the air to illustrate how the stream of soil rotates and falls back onto the soil surface to undergo a new pass with the tines. Cheap in the long run After a complete first autumn season at Gisselfeld, the machine has shown its capability. To date, Cultus has fulfilled expectations. The machine is robust and the rubber roller reconsolidates in a way that suits our soils. Kim Lundby has had good experience of Väderstad machines in the past. We could have bought a cheaper cultivator, but I don t believe that it would last as long with the demands we have on operating reliability. So in a few years time I am convinced that our Cultus will be cheap in the long run. He also decreases his time consumption in the field by 40%. Saves time and diesel Farmers experiences More uniform emergence, decreased diesel consumption and fewer problems with crusting are three of the benefits brought by Cultus to Stanislaw Bruchwald in northern Poland. The reliability of the machine is what he appreciates most. Stanislaw Bruchwald combines pig production and arable on 320 hectares on his farm Rogale in northern Poland. The autumn is labour-intensive, since almost 300 hectares have to be drilled with winter rape, winter barley, winter rye and winter wheat. All that remains in the spring is 30 hectares of spring barley. Adjustable working depth For the past few years he has not ploughed but uses a Cultus 420 together with a disc implement for shallow cultivation. He first uses the disc implement regardless of preceding crop, and then after 2-3 weeks he uses his Cultus 420. For autumn drilling he cultivates to around 15 cm depth, while the depth is increased to 25 cm before winter rape. At the greatest working depth, he has a work rate of 2.5 hectares per hour with 50 mm points on the tines. A few days after Cultus cultivation, the next crop is established with a Rapid seed drill. The results are fantastic, declared Stanislaw Bruchwald. In the past he had problems with crusts on hills and slopes but these have disappeared now due to harvest trash being left in the topsoil. The fields are also better levelled and emergence is greatly improved, which he believes to be a result of the uniform working depth of Cultus litres of diesel saved The old system with the plough used 43 litres of diesel per hectare to establish a new crop. Now fuel consumption has decreased to 31.5 litres per hectare, mainly due to all the cultivations before and after the plough no longer being needed. In total for his 320 hectares, this amounts to a saving of almost 3700 litres of diesel a tidy saving that can be very useful elsewhere. Cultus reliability appreciated It is not only fuel costs that have decreased by 30%. Equally important is the time saving. I appreciate the fact that the hours in the field have decreased by around 40%, said Stanislaw Bruchwald. These are important hours for someone who also has animals on his farm. The capacity was decisive for him when he invested in his Cultus. However, most important of all is the quality and trustworthiness of Väderstad machines. 25 Phenomenal incorporation Harvest trash is mixed in phenomenally well by Cultus, according to Swedish farmer Carl-Ragnar Orsmark. The rigid tines break up the soil, the MixIn-shins mix and the roller crushes. In two passes the soil has turned black and winter wheat drilling is an easy task, even on heavy clay In the very south of Sweden, Carl- Ragnar Orsmark runs Åsbacka Gård, a 300 hectare arable farm. Half his crops are established in the autumn and the other half in the spring. The soils are mainly heavy clays with a clay content of over 40%, and unfortunately there are lots of stones. These soils are no easy task when it comes to cultivation, he explained. Black soil after 2 x Cultus For a few years Carl-Ragnar Orsmark operated using a home-built combination of an old Cultus with spring tines linked together with a Carrier. However in 2005 the new Cultus model with rigid tines came out and Carl-Ragnar tested a demo machine. It was almost a miracle for him. It was amazing! I stood at the side and watched how the harvest trash was mixed into the soil and I could see the difference at once. There was only half as much trash left on the surface compared with the old Cultus model. It is truly a step forward. Now he makes two passes with his Cultus 420 before drilling winter wheat. Sometimes one pass is enough, but only in exceptional cases. In the spring, sugarbeet and spring cereal are drilled directly or after a surface cultivation in areas where Cultus worked the field in the autumn. But two passes are the basic strategy. The soil should then be black and it usually is, except for a bit of trash on the surface. Breaks up and crushes He abandoned ploughing around to save diesel and time. Ploughing took up 1 hour per hectare, plus a lot of time to get a finished seedbed. Now he handles hectares per hour with Cultus. Two passes are usually needed to decrease the difference compared with the plough, but there is still more time over for other things. After ploughing it was often difficult to establish winter crops, but that is easier with Cultus. The tines break up the soil, the shins mix and the packer roller crushes clods in a single pass.
