1 Do different liquids effect the rate of germination. By: Bridger Zoske

2 Question: Will different liquids effect germination time of Mung Bean and Wheat seeds. (Different groups are Smart water, Salt, Tap water, and No liquid) Hypothesis: We believe that smart water will allow the seeds to grow faster than salt water and tap water because smart water has more nutrients that will provide the seeds more "food" to germinate quicker. We also believe that salt water will dry the seeds out and suck the nutrients from the seeds. Independent Variable : The different liquids Dependent Variable : The amount of time it takes for the seed cotyledon and seed leaf to be clearly visible. Materials: -A role of paper towels -A liter of smart water ML of tap water -40 ML of table salt -4 zip-lock plastic bags ML beaker -tape and marker (labeling) -20 mung beens, 20 wheat seeds Procedure: 1. Moisten a square of paper towel with the liquid chosen and lay it out on a flat surface. 2. Place 5 mung beens and 5 wheat seeds across the surface of the dampened paper towel. Arrange the seeds so they do not touch one another. Moisten a second square of paper towel. Place the second paper towel directly atop the first. 3. Gently roll it up into a cylinder. Repeat the process, beginning at Step 1, for all of the other liquids. (except for the dry trial, use no liquid) 4. Place finished paper towel and seed cylinders into the zip-lock plastic bags. Seal the bag and allow it to rest at room temperature until it is germinated, or the seed cotyledon and seed leaf is clearly visible. Then take observations for the different days.

3 Observations: - Day one / :35 a.m Mung beens are 5.5 mm and green with a split in the middle Wheat seeds are 5.5mm length and 2.5 mm across with a large split running length wise on the seed. All of the seeds are in their moist paper towels. - Day two / :26 a.m Mung beens' shoot begins to appear through the crack in the middle. The shoots are white and about 3 mm long. Wheat seeds had shoots appear about 2mm and white. Salt water seeds are beginning to loose color and become mushy. The smart and tap waters are the same Lengths. Dry is same as the day before. - Day three / :41 a.m The Mung beens' shoots grows to 8 mm for the tap water and 6 mm for the smart water. The wheat seeds have sprouted 3, 10mm long white roots and have imbedded themselves into the paper towel. The shoot has grown to 4mm and sprouted green tips. The dry is dry and the same as day one, and the salt water is wrinkly mushy and loosing more color. - Day six / :23 a.m All of the seeds had grown significantly over the weekend. The tap water's mung beens had the largest shoots of 73 mm long. The tap's largest wheat seed had 50mm shoots and 84mm roots. The smart water was surprisingly the second largest growth. Smart had only 9 total seeds successfully germinate. The largest mung shoot was 58mm The largest wheat seed shoot was 41mm and roots where 50mm.

The wheat seeds germinated in tap water seemed to grow significantly more then that in smart water. The dry seeds had, as planed, done nothing and stayed the same from day one. However, the salt water grown seeds not only didn't grow, but got the color sucked from them, and each one was more wrinkly and mushy. Conclusion: The tap water germinated seeds much more quickly than smart water grown seeds. My hypothesis was proven wrong by the data collected. This could be do to the fact that the added minerals could only have a positive effect on animals, and not on plants. The not needed minerals could have in facts slowed down the germination process by slowing the rate of water intake.
