3 Page 2 Welcome to the 2009 Michigan State University Plant Trials Located at the MSU Horticulture Gardens East Lansing, Michigan The MSU Horticulture Gardens have been planned and built based on the generous financial support of our horticulture industries, the general public and our very own Friends of the Garden. We are proud to be a part of the MSU Department of Horticulture, considered to be one of the finest horticulture teaching, research and extension facilities in the country. The purpose of our trial gardens is to grow and evaluate new (and sometimes old!) species and cultivars of a wide range of plants under our mid Michigan climatic conditions. Our growing conditions here are characterized by cold winters (USDA Zone 5) and cool springs followed by warm, sometimes hot humid summers. Our last frost date is typically May 15, and night temperatures are consistently above 50 F after about June 1. In 2009, we have received ample rainfall and temperatures were cooler than normal. In 2010, our spring started early, cooled a bit in June with above average rainfall, and has been quite hot and dry in July, with numerous days over 90 F. Performance of each plant in the trials is evaluated by staff and our summer intern based on vigor, uniformity, and ornamental value flowers and/or foliage depending on the plant. We also take note of susceptibility to diseases and insects, and tolerance to changes in climatic conditions when appropriate. Plant performance depends on a number of factors including genetics, soil and weather conditions. A summary of this evaluation information will be posted on the web for professionals and the general gardening public. Traditionally, annual plants and tender perennials grown for a single season have been the primary focus of the plant trials. Most of these trials are conducted in our trial gardens to the west of the Plant and Soil Science Building. Recently, we have begun to include even more vegetables, herbaceous perennials, and even native plants. These exciting new additions expand the value of these trials to an even larger gardening audience. The vegetables have been moved to our new (and still developing) Vegetable Demonstration Garden which is located at the end of the rose garden to the south. The native plant trials are located in beds just to the east of the Food Safety and Toxicology Building. s or young plants are typically submitted by breeders, seed companies, nurseries, and individuals. Plants are grown in our MSU greenhouses and transplanted into ground beds or containers starting in mid May and completed in early June. Companies are given the choice of whether they would prefer their plants to be grown in ground beds or in 22 containers. In the ground beds, plants are typically planted at 8 to 12 spacing depending on the species with generally about 24 plants per trial entry. Due to space
4 Page 3 constraints, fewer plants were used of each native plant and vegetable entry. Note that some entries perform remarkably better in containers than in the ground. Funding to support our trials come mostly from Plant breeding companies, Western Michigan Greenhouse Growers and Garden sponsored events. We are looking for additional sponsors as we continue to expand the scope and nature of our trial gardens. In 2010, we have had 15 companies participate in our trials. There were 405 official plus numerous unofficial entries including 161 seed propagated flowering or foliage plants, 205 plants from cuttings and tissue culture, 19 vegetables, and 20 Michigan native plants. We area also an official All American Selections location and an additional 52 plants were tested for flowers and foliage and another 37 vegetables entries were tested to help establish the next round of All American winners! MSU was first selected as a site for the All America Selections trials in These trials are located in Beds to the west of the Conservatory. We also have several AAS vegetable plants that are being trialed in the new Vegetable Demonstration Garden. Fleuroselect is an international organization that promotes great annual and perennial plants that perform in a vast array of gardens. Fleuroselect winners are also planted in beds to the west of the Conservatory. All of these gardens are maintained by a dedicated staff housed in the Horticulture Department. Dan Buklowski is the overall Garden Manager, Katie McCarver is the Trial Manager. The Trials are under the direction of Dr. Art Cameron, Professor of Horticulture and MSU Horticulture Garden Director. If you have time, be sure and visit the Judy Delapa Herbaceous Perennial Gardens, the 4 H Children s Garden, and the C.E. Lewis Arboretum. We believe you will find many additional jewels if you further explore our MSU Horticulture Gardens. Thank you for visiting the MSU Horticulture Gardens! 10 Page Garden Staff The People That Make It Happen! Trial Garden Manager Greenhouse and Garden Manager Perennial Gardens and more Educational coordinator Katie McCarver This was Katie s first year as our Trial Garden Manager and, as you will see, she has done a fantastic job. She comes from Tennessee and has learned our Michigan growing conditions in a hurry. Please compliment her and the rest of the staff on a job well done. Dan Bulkowski Our fearless leader in the greenhouse and garden! An impossible job but he manages to pull it off and with a smile! Ann Hancock and Sara Murphy Ann retired in June, 2010 after many years of dedicated service to our gardens. Luckily for us, Sara Murphy has stepped up for the summer to take over and help keep our perennials looking great. Jessica Albright Always bright and chipper, Jessica helps on any number of educational programs mostly but not always for children. In the spring she takes care of our beautiful butterflies! 11 Page 10 Summer Students The students have rocked this summer! Each has spent long hours weeding, watering and doing an endless number of small tasks repeatedly. Ugh. that is gardening. Hopefully they learned that the end product has been worth the effort! I believe our many visitors would certainly think so! Students generally spend their time in one of four major areas in the gardens: Trial Gardens, Judy DeLapa Perennial Garden, 4 H Children s Garden or the C.E. Lewis Arboretum. Annual Trials Summer Intern Brett Peterson Brett received a summer student internship funded by Western Michigan Greenhouse Growers to work in the trial gardens. He has helped in all phases of the trial gardens, from planting, data collection and entry, to weeding and watering. Students in Trial gardens: Katelind Aho Stacey Weinlander Judy Delapa Perennial and Vegetable Demonstration Gardens: Phil Munoz (undergraduate MSU Horticulture summer intern) Students who have worked on several projects throughout the gardens: Alex Bettinghouse Gabe McKenney Sam Ness Kyle Wallace Nick Wells Students in 4 H Children s Garden: Christine Mangiavellano Emily McKay (undergraduate MSU Horticulture major) Students in C.E Lewis Arboretum: Bethany Borchak (undergraduate MSU Horticulture major) Nick Johnson Jordan Williams Dustin Corr

13 Page 12 Michigan State University Plant Trials 2010 Cultural Information Starting Material s were received in the MSU Greenhouses during the winter and early spring months. s were germinated in seed flats or plug trays at 75 F. s of seeding are given in the following trial tables. After appropriate growth, seedlings were transplanted to 4 containers or 1204 flats. Transplant dates are also given in the following tables. Cloned plants were propagated by cuttings or tissue culture in commercial greenhouses. Rooted cuttings were shipped to MSU as plugs. Upon receipt, the rooted cuttings were transplanted immediately into 1801 flats. Most were received and transplanted in March and April. Greenhouse Conditions After transplanting, all seed and vegetative material were grown in glass greenhouses set at ~75 F daytime and ~68 F nighttime temperature until moved to the garden beds. Plants were grown in peat lite soil mix (Fafard #2 generously donated by Fafard) and fertigated at every watering with (125 ppm N) water soluble fertilizer. No PGRs were used on annuals evaluated in these trials. Container Plants Companies are given the choice of whether they would prefer their plants to be grown in containers or ground beds. When requested, plants were transplanted into 22 containers and held in the greenhouse for about 2 weeks before placing them outdoors between May 26 and June 3. Some plants were tested both in ground beds and containers. Outdoor Ground Bed Management Fall 2009 Cleanup, early bed preparation After removal of annuals in the fall, all beds were raked and cleaned. Compost was added to beds as needed and all beds were rototilled in the fall. In general, beds are rich in organic matter. Spring 2010 Preplanting activities Roundup herbicide was applied to re establish bed lines where necessary and to control weeds before planting and lawn irrigation heads were adjusted to avoid irrigating the beds. Spring 2010 Planting Schedule In 2010, we began planting Trial plants on May 17th and finished on June 8 th. Typical plant spacing Plants are typically planted at 8 12 on center depending on the species. We typically plant at least 24 plants per trial entry in landscaped beds. Due to space restraints, fewer plants were used of each native plant and vegetable entry.
14 Page 13 Summer Maintenance of Trials Watering All beds are hand watered as needed. Soils tend to be dry in our trial garden, though we received a substantial amount of rain in June. July has bee relatively dry. Compared to last year, it has been warmer. Fertilization Ground beds of most annuals were fertigated with a (250 ppm N) water soluble fertilizer every two or three weeks. We did not give more than this since it is of interest to learn which plants do better with less fertilizer. No fertilizer was given in the native plant trial. It would be great to see new annuals that are bred to require less fertilizer. Some of the petunia relatives grown in ground beds suffered from high ph symptoms. Our ph can run well into the 7s. It was interesting to note that some petunia and calibrachoa cultivars were not nearly as sensitive as others. This gives some idea that petunias and other bedding plants could be selected for decreased sensitivity to high ph and other nutrient stress. Weeding All beds are hand weeded and cultivated as needed until plants fill in. The garden staff will acknowledge that the weeds have been particularly happy this year, purslane in particular! Long hours of hand weeding were required to keep the beds looking as good as they did! Volunteers helped a great deal on this tedious task. Disease control No treatments have been given this year for insect or disease control in the annuals. Other than a good outbreak of Japanese Beetles, it was a fairly good year, and relatively few troublesome insects or disease pests were noted. Deadheading Geraniums were deadheaded regularly throughout the season. As needed, dahlias, salvias, snapdragons, marigolds, verbena, and zinnias were deadheaded. Some cultivars required far less deadheading than others certainly a desirable trait! Hanging Baskets Most of the hanging baskets seen in the MSU Horticulture Demonstration Gardens were generously donated by Four Star Greenhouses (Carleton, Michigan). They were received in June as finished baskets. They have been watered and fertilized daily with a water soluble fertilizer at 250 ppm N. Students keep these hanging baskets looking so good Weather Information The spring and early summer was reasonably warm weather with ample rain. It has heated up in July with less rain.
