The primary objective is to develop the students design vocabulary and to heighten awareness of design in the real world. 2 The second goal is to impart an overview of interior design history, from the Ancient Egyptian Era to Neo-Classicism (up to late18th Century). The intention is to help students understand the continuity of design ideas, and the foundation & components of style. DDSN_1131_Sly_ doc 2
3 LEARNING OUTCOMES Skills: Upon successful completion of Display + Design 1131, the student will be able to: Identify & manipulate the design fundamentals of line, shape, form, pattern, texture, colour, emphasis, balance, rhythm, harmony, scale and proportion. identify & incorporate in a decorative setting the design/furniture styles and motifs of the Ancient Egyptian Era to the Neo-Classic Era. Knowledge Base: Upon successful completion of D+D 1131, the student will understand: the design process as it applies to interior design; how the basic elements and principles of design find application in interior design. The elements of design which will be covered are: line, shape, form, mass, space, value, basic colour, texture & pattern. The design principles that will be explored are: emphasis, focus, rhythm, balance, harmony, scale and proportion. the components of historical styles ranging from the Ancient Egyptian Era to the Neo-Classic Era. EVALUATION: 1. Term Work: 80% 2. Final exam: 20% TOTAL 100% Term Work Breakdown: 1. Design History Mark: 20% 2. Design Elements & Principles: 60% (Sub-total..80%) DDSN_1131_Sly_ doc 3
4 POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: Although every attempt will be made to adhere to this schedule of classes & topics, from time to time, topics and assignment deadlines may have to be adjusted to accommodate deadlines in other courses. Professionalism is a very important aspect of working in any design field. Therefore, Langara's Code of Conduct, which parallels standards of behaviour acceptable in the workplace, will apply to all classroom situations. (Follow the Policy links to No. B3002 on the Langara website.) Another aspect of professionalism is timeliness. Accordingly, projects should be submitted on time. Late projects are treated in this way: Submitted on the date due, but some hours after the deadline: -5% Submitted one day late (weekends count as 2 days): -10% Submitted more than one day late: the project may be reviewed by the instructor but may not receive a passing grade. A doctor s note is required for any illness which causes you to miss a quiz, assignment, project or exam. The instructor shall decide whether the work can be made up or whether a pro-rated mark shall be assigned for the course work. If a scheduled class is cancelled due to instructor illness, this will not be posted on the classroom door. The College policy is to post such notices on the web portal: mylangara.bc.ca.
