DESIGN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, MIAMI, FL TEXT BY MARINA BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK ROSKAMS, NEW YORK, NY Like a linen summer suit in the tropics, the dining room s bright white walls and linen-clad chairs from Herval Furniture, along with the kitchen s white custom cabinetry by Mtec Custom Cabinets, set the stage for cool possibilities.

In the living area, a nod to nature is conveyed in an occasional table of petrified wood from the Phillips Collection, and beige-toned flooring in Sabia marble reminiscent of a sandy beach.

D esigning a home in Miami is like taking the aesthetic pulse of the world. With new residents arriving daily from Europe, Asia and Latin America, each brings with them their own sense of style that is reflected in the beauty of their homes. It should seem that interior designers Carola Pimentel and her partner Andrea Maenz- Roggiero, would have a slight edge when it comes to understanding a Latin American style. But for these two designers, that is never the guiding principal when it comes to creating contemporary and livable interiors. I was born in the Dominican Republic and Andrea was born in Ecuador, Pimentel says. What we design always fits the lifestyle and vision of our client, as well as their surrounding area. To create this 10,000-square-foot home in Miami, the design team, along with architect Antonio Rodriguez, and builders Eugenio Cosculluela and Jim Hinds, took into consideration the owners love of entertaining, their love of sports and a desire for natural textures in every space. This was the perfect platform for the design team to create an exceptional contemporary residence for this young family. 124 FLORIDA DESIGN S MIAMI H&D 12-4

3 THE INVITING FAMILY ROOM IS PERSONALIZED WITH THE OWNERS FRAMED SPORTS JERSEYS AND ASSORTED SPORTS MEMORABILIA. THE THREE-TIERED, CURIO-LIKE COCKTAIL TABLE HOUSES AN ASSORTMENT OF BOOKS AND ACCESSORIES, AND IS ANCHORED BY A RICH BROWN-TEXTURED AREA RUG. The spacious six-bedroom home is designed with a palette of gallery-like white, neutral tones, and comfortable furnishings with elongated lines. The family, who enjoys hosting sports nights with their friends and family, also wanted a home that was fun, functional and light. It features a gym, and a separate family room and pub area filled with a vast collection of sports memorabilia that would put any sports bar to shame. Just steps from the entry, a living wall of greenery in the dining room, designed by Gilberto Kersting, literally brings the outside in. Set on a white canvas, the vertical garden is as dramatic as any painted masterpiece. We chose furniture and accessories that were to be lived with and comfortable, Manz-Roggiero says. A dining table in walnut is edged with linen-covered chairs from Herval with backs outlined in wenge wood that make 10 trapezoid shapes. Above, a whimsically elegant chandelier by Stilnovo glitters with hand-blown globes on brass branches. Beyond, the kitchen rests quietly in its own white mirage, interrupted only by a subtle colored backsplash of softly buffed Santamargherita quartz tiles from Opustone. In the living room, dark frames are echoed in armchairs with spindled backs from Judith Norman and geometric elements recur with splashes of color in accent pillows from Assure Home. Light neutral hues continue in the living area arranged with a bespoke sofa upholstered in oatmeal-hued linen by Romo, and above: In the bar area, wooden barstools from Herval Furniture pull up to a base of vertically displayed baseball bats and a glass display case filled with an assortment of baseballs. Though subtle, the area rug s patterned tendrils harmonize well with the white-lacquered cabinetry in the kitchen. A rectangular cocktail table from Artefacto in wood and glass, cleverly caches an ottoman for additional seating. Set in the entertainment wing of the home, a family room with a sumptuous chocolate leather sectional is just perfect for this sports-loving family to curl up on while watching an event on their large screen TV. Lining the wall behind the sofa is a display of framed baseball jerseys, a reminder of shared good times. The other side of the room is just as delightfully singular. Backed in dark-stained walnut, Assure Interiors custom designed a unique baseball-themed bar with a vertical display of baseball bats applied to the base and topped by a glass display case filled with a colleciton of baseballs. It s a design feature that any sports lover would envy. left: Through sliding glass doors, a set of steps lead from the main living spaces to the pool area, where the mosaic-tiled pool and a deck crafted with Dominican keystone create a luxurious space. 128 FLORIDA DESIGN S MIAMI H&D 12-4

5 INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LINES ARE BLURRED IN THIS EXCEPTIONAL HOME. CREATED BY INTERIOR DESIGNERS CAROLA PIMENTEL AND ANDREA MANZ-ROGGIERO, IT IS A COMFORTABLE PLACE WHERE THE OWNERS CAN ENJOY THE BEST OF FLORIDA LIVING. Outdoors, a glass mosaic wall shapes an infinity style pool. With a nod to its waterfront location, spacious balconies lend stunning water views and delicate outriggers under the eaves keep the exterior from seeming overly spare. In the loggia, woven-wicker dining chairs continue nature s decorative note as they edge a wooden outdoor table. Pimentel, who has designed for both commercial and residential clients in both Central America and the Far East, loves listening to and revealing the client s own sense of livable harmony. While her own aesthetic is minimalist, she recognizes that there are some differences in cultures different needs and different expectations. Good design, in harmony with the natural environment and an understanding of how a client likes to live these are what makes for a successful outcome in any project, the designer says. above: It s hard to tell where the inside ends and the outdoors begins in this expansive loggia outfitted with an outdoor kitchen and an island bar.
