4 01 CORPORATE Today s office interiors need to provide a healthy and comfortable work environment. By working in tandem with many leading interior design and architectural practices Ontera has created many stunning flooring solutions for commercial offices in both Australia and New Zealand. These all provide the design flexibility and ongoing performance to create a workspace that is perfectly suited to their clients needs.

5 NORMAN DISNEY & YOUNG CORPORATE E+ ARCHITECTURE ENVISIONS & E-SCAPE MELBOURNE VIC AUSTRALIA LINEAR LUXURY Ontera provided the carpet tile flooring for the award-winning offices of Norman Disney & Young (NDY) in Melbourne. NDY are multi-disciplinary building services engineers and leaders in ESD, and accordingly wanted to gain a five star Green Star rating in Office Design, As Built and Interiors. Architects E+ determined that today s office interiors need to provide a healthy and comfortable work environment, and they wanted to ensure that this office provided a model for future developments for their client. E+ Architecture used Ontera modular carpet to fulfill a number of major interior design elements: strong linear lines in the base carpet to accentuate the length of the building; use of a dark coloured floor to provide a strong aesthetic foundation and contrast for the light coloured furniture; the use of a green line in the floor of the general offices to represent the green direction of the building and its occupants, as well as assisting with orientation within the building. In addition a number of environmental qualities were critical factors in their product selection: GECA certification; ability to be reused at end of life; ability to replace worn or damaged tiles and the ability to reconfigure office space without replacing all of the carpet. The project has already been awarded a five star rating in Office Design, and the same rating is anticipated in the Interiors and As Built tools. The project has been awarded a High Commendation in the recent National Interior Design Awards.

12 WESTPAC PLACE CORPORATE GEYER DESIGN AND HASSELL COLOURWEAVE CUSTOM DESIGN SYDNEY NSW AUSTRALIA A VIVID PASSION Ontera produced over 64,000m 2 of modular carpet for the Westpac Place building in Sydney, the headquarters for Westpac Banking Corporation. Following the successful design submission Geyer as principal consultant, together with Hassell and DEGW Architects and project management staff from Westpac developed a concept design brief for the floorcovering. According to Geyer/Hassell, The main design concept for the Westpac experience was centred on the dynamics of the city (Sydney), with its diversity of neighbourhoods, destinations and focal points. All furniture, finishes and materials corresponded to the four themes of Organic, Grid, Radial and Sinuous, creating a holistic approach to each area from its architecture to its detail. The main elements of the design brief were the provision of a field tile, an additional version providing a stipple effect and 15 different bright colours in both a solid and striped format. All the resulting individual modular components were laid in alternating designs depending on the location.

14 02 GOVERNMENT Like all public spaces the interior design for all government installations places heavy demands on the wear resistance and appearance retention of the flooring and provides an opportunity to create a high level of visual impact. 20 04 04 PUBLIC SPACES Interior design for public spaces such as airports, train stations, museums, libraries and other publicly accessible areas place heavy demands on the long-term performance of the flooring. In addition, the flooring provides an opportunity to create a high level of visual impact. Here we highlight a number of high-profile installations in Australia and New Zealand where Ontera has worked with the architect and interior designer to provide a flooring solution that perfectly synergises these two requirements.

21 QUEENSLAND STATE LIBRARY PUBLIC SPACES DONOVAN HILL ENVISIONS CUSTOM DESIGN BRISBANE QLD AUSTRALIA NATIVE CHARM The redeveloped State Library of Queensland has undoubtedly achieved a dramatic result in re-engaging one of Queensland s major cultural institutions that has been designed with a rich diversity of contemporary settings for both individual and group applications. Inspiration for the carpet design was based on the State Library s corporate red colour, and a clever connection with the botanical print effects found on the inside of many traditional hard covered books. The botanical graphic that was selected reflects the Harpullia Pendula, a local native tree that grows around the library area. The same graphic expression has also been utilised on doors and the eastern external wall. Different colour variations of the carpet were also employed to differentiate floor levels, and thereby ease the process of navigation around the building. Ontera Envisions cut pile carpet was selected for this project based on a proven track record in wear resistance (backed by a 15 year warranty) that is required for such a demanding, high foot-traffic public space RAIA Brisbane Building of the Year.

26 05 05 RETAIL All high street and shopping centre retail outlets place heavy demands on both the design and durability of the flooring. It is important to provide an attractive, inviting environment to allure shoppers into the store as well as a level of comfort and sense of wellbeing to make shoppers stay for longer. Ontera modular carpet can either be used throughout the store or designed to create a central focal point for consultation booths in the middle of a store.

33 AUSTRALIAN TECHNICAL COLLEGE EDUCATION BIRRELLI ARCHITECTS KROMAPLUS INVERESK TAS AUSTRALIA BOLD RHYTHMS The Australian Technical College is a unique twenty-first century trade and secondary teaching facility promoting excellence in teaching for vocational and life-long learning. The design features a portal-framed, elongated, utilitarian building referencing the traditional industrial forms of the Inveresk railyard structures. It combines a simple structural system, clearly expressed portal frames, with an economy of means and an honest expression. The award-winning design incorporates a bold, daring, and inspiring palette of materials and tones, intended to add colour to the heritage precinct. Ontera s Kromaplus range was selected mainly for its ability to link with the rhythm of the northern facade and the bespoke acoustic ceiling panels. The product was used extensively throughout on the walls and served two functional purposes in addition to the visual impact; an acoustic treatment as well as providing an area for pin boarding. Overall Winner Public Architecture Category: Australian Institute of Architects Tasmania Chapter.

34 RMIT STOREY HALL EDUCATION ARM COLOURWEAVE CUSTOM DESIGN MELBOURNE VIC AUSTRALIA CHAOS THEORY After major refurbishment in 1994 and a new extension on the adjoining site, the Royal Australian Institute of Architects judged RMIT Storey Hall of architectural significance and the building received several awards and commendations. Today s powerful purple and green colours recall the hall s earlier life as a place for feminist debate and Catholic activism and the shapes and spaces seen in the Storey Hall lecture theatre were inspired in part by chaos mathematics, particularly fractal geometry. After 15 years of continual use the lecture theatre required refurbishment and due to the significance of the existing designs and colours it was deemed appropriate to maintain the colour and design integrity. Fortunately the lecture theatre was installed originally with Ontera modular carpets and as a result of Ontera s unique final stage colouration technology, the colour and design components were digitally stored safely in computer files. This ensured that Ontera was able to reproduce the colour and design elements of the original installation a practical example of Ontera s guaranteed long term availability being applied.

35 07 A significant amount 07 of energy goes into the SUSTAINABILITY production of high quality carpet tiles. We strive to retain the energy embodied in our products and not waste this precious resource. Most importantly, we do this in Australia, and do not rely on the highly questionable practice of shipping used product around the world. Equally importantly, our Earthplus program is both environmentally and commercially sustainble. The use of Ontera product has helped to significantly reduce the environmental impact of these installations and provide maximum green star credit points.

36 KAKARIKI HOUSE Sustainability Consultant CONNELL WAGNER SUSTAINABILITY SEKTA ARCHITECTS E-SCAPE HAMILTON NEW ZEALAND THE GREEN HOUSE The Waikato region in New Zealand has had its first official green building certified by the New Zealand Green Building Council. WISE Group s Kakariki House which translates from Maori to Green House in Grey St Hamilton East has been a given a four-star rating. The rating signifies that the building now meets internationally recognised standards for energy, water, materials and emissions. WISE joint chief executive Jacqui Graham said going green was not a difficult decision to make. Nor was the decision to recycle as much of the existing building as possible. It wasn t the easy option or the cheapest one but it was the right thing to do. Kakariki House includes a number of special features. It was built using concrete blocks made of twenty per cent recycled aggregate which slow down heat transfer and require less energy for heating or cooling. Motion sensors control lighting and a computerised system stringently monitors the use of power and water. In addition the flooring uses carpet tiles which can be individually replaced and can be taken back for reuse at the end of their life. For WISE, the four-star rating for Kakariki House is the start of a longer green journey. We re really committed to this. We d like to aim for an even higher rating. It s not just about having a green building; it s about working and living sustainably. Kakariki House won a Merit Award in the Special purpose category from the New Zealand Property Council.

38 UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE Sustainability Consultant SBE SUSTAINABILITY SIX DEGREES EARTHPLUS LAUNCESTON TAS AUSTRALIA A REFINED REUSE A major part of the original brief from UTAS was to select materials and finishes for the fitout on the basis of their low environmental impact, recycled content and recylability. As a result 750m 2 of Ontera Earthplus reused modular carpet was used in the installation. The carpet tiles were uplifted from a previous location (having been first used in Central Park project in St George s Terrace in Perth) then super-cleaned, retextured and repatterned and supplied with a new a 7-year warranty. This process of post-consumer product reuse helps to significantly reduce waste; the product installed on this project ensured that approximately 3.76 tonnes of carpet was diverted from landfill. Undoubtedly a win-win result for both UTAS and the environment.

39 TREVOR PEARCY HOUSE Sustainability Consultant VIRIDIS E3 SUSTAINABILITY COLLARD CLARKE JACKSON EARTHPLUS BRUCE ACT AUSTRALIA GREEN INVESTMENT Trevor Pearcy House is a 19 year old building located within Fern Hill Technology Park in Bruce, ACT. The refurbished building has become the new head office for Australian Ethical Investment (AEI) and is the first 6-star Green Star building in the ACT. AEI is an Australian investment company who specialise in environmental and socially responsible investment. One of the unusual and interesting features of the refurbishment is the level of reuse and recycling of materials, including glass partitioning walls that were retained and reused, all existing internal doors were reused and glass blocks from an original wall in the foyer were removed and reused in the construction of the ventilation stacks to increase the level of natural daylight into internal rooms. Some of the existing carpet tiles were reused, in addition to an extra 250m 2 of Earthplus reused product that had first been installed in Central Park, Perth in 1991 and then uplifted, transported back to Sydney to undergo a three-stage renewal process. Having been given a new lease of life, the reused product became a major feature of the first 6-Star Green Star building outside Melbourne.
