4 From 1820 until the Civil War, architectural adaptations of the Greek Revival style were popular in both large and small homes throughout Chautauqua County. Even in the early 21 st century, the Town of Harmony still features a few homes of this historic period. According to SUNY Fredonia s Professor Emeritus aniel. Reiff in Houses from Books (The Pennsylvania State University Press, 2000), The first book with the new Greek orders available to ordinary builders and carpenters was John Haviland s The Builder s Assistant, in three volumes (Philadelphia, ), but books with even more impact on the spread of the Greek Revival style were The American Builder s Companion by Asher Benjamin (sixth edition, 1827) and The Practical House Carpenter, also by Asher Benjamin (Boston, 1830). Equally influential, according to Reiff, was The Modern Builder s Guide by Minard Lafever (New York, 1833) and The Beauties of Modern Architecture, also by Minard Lafever (New York, 1835). The Greek Revival style, as is immediately apparent, is based mainly on the Greek temple form, though it did not, except in a few rare cases, attempt to reproduce the exact temple shape rectangular, with columns around all four sides, Reiff explained. In the larger examples in Chautauqua County, a triangular pediment was supported by freestanding oric columns. These homes were usually symmetric, and painted white to suggest marble. However, in the smaller homes, churches, and commercial buildings of Chautauqua County, the Greek Revival style was adapted for a more diminutive structure. According to Reiff in Architecture in Fredonia, New York, (The Fredonia Preservation Society, 1997), Although no free-standing columns are used, (a) the pediment form is adapted for the gable; (b) the cornice edges turn inward for a couple of feet to suggest the lower cornice of a full pediment. (c) The door is framed by a casing which takes the form of a section of entablature held up by tall pilasters at either side of the door. There were also decorative frieze bands with closely spaced dentils in many of these small structures, Reiff pointed out, giving the structure greater archeological correctness and enriched visual appeal. Persell site in 1867 and 1881, the former Colonial Hotel was demolished in B. 1 East Main, approximately The Steward and Pray store was shown on the 1854 county wall map, on the 1867 county atlas, and on the 1881 atlas. It was destroyed by fire in the early 20 th century. C. 9 East Main Shown as the home of r. C. Ormes (1854 and 1867), this house was shown as that of L. H. Robbins on the 1881 county atlas.. 32 East Main Street Shown as the J. Steward house on the 1854 map of Panama and on the 1867 county atlas, it was later shown as the home of Mrs. M. Steward on the 1881 county atlas. E. 35 North Street Shown as the S. B. Manly home on the 1854 map of Panama, this was the J. Pease house on the 1867 and 1881 county atlases. F. 22 East Main Shown as the Methodist Church on the 1854, 1867, and 1881 maps of Panama, this building was demolished in 1928 for a new brick church. G. 27 East Main This building was shown as the Presbyterian Church on the 1854, 1867, and 1881 maps of Panama. H East Main Shown without a name on the 1854 map of Panama, this was possibly the home of Mrs. Hempsted on the 1867 atlas and that of Mrs. Lewis on the 1881 atlas. I. 20 School Street This was the r. H. H. Glidden residence (1854), and then the James Knapp residence (1867 and 1881). J. 28 Wesleyan Street Shown as the S. Paddoc home on the 1854 map of Panama, this house was shown as that of S. L. Paddock on the 1867 county atlas. On the 1881 county atlas, the home is shown as that of R. F. Randolph. K. 6a and 6b East Main At least one of these is probably the W. H. Cook building shown on the 1867 and 1881 atlases of Chautauqua County. The two buildings were also shown on the 1854 map of Panama, but without names.
